Two Years Before the Mast

release date: Sep 24, 2025
Two Years Before the Mast
« Two Years Before the Mast » by Richard Henry Dana Jr. is a landmark maritime memoir that immerses readers in an authentic sea adventure of the nineteenth century. At just twenty years old, Dana leaves Harvard and signs on as a common sailor aboard the merchant brig Pilgrim, departing from Boston to the remote coast of California. His account, rich in detail, reveals the harsh realities of life at sea, the perils of sailing the Pacific Ocean, and the daily routines of the crew as they navigate storms, endure hardship, and visit the bustling ports of Monterey, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. Dana''s narrative is more than a tale of adventure; it is a vivid chronicle of a 19th-century voyage that captures the social and economic landscape of California before the Gold Rush. He documents the discipline imposed by captains, the camaraderie among sailors, and the backbreaking labor involved in the hide trade. Through his keen observations, Dana provides rare insight into the lives of both the crew and the coastal communities, describing everything from Spanish missions to the rugged beauty of the coastline. The memoir stands out for its honesty and clarity, offering a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the open sea. Dana''s reflections on freedom, dignity, and personal growth resonate with readers seeking both adventure and introspection. With its blend of historical narrative, travel literature, and American classic storytelling, « Two Years Before the Mast » remains an essential read for anyone fascinated by maritime history, seafaring life, and the transformative power of travel.

For a Great and Grand Purpose

For a Great and Grand Purpose
The story of a church that became influential within the Black community in Florida after the Civil War This history of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) Church in Florida tells how dedicated members of one of the oldest and most prominent black religious institutions created a forceful presence within the African-American community—against innumerable odds and constant challenges. The African Methodist Episcopal Zion denomination established an official presence in the state one year before its better-known cousin and rival, the African Methodist Episcopal Church. When Connecticut native Wilbur Garrison Strong arrived in Key West in 1864, he stood out as the first black ordained minister in all of peninsular Florida. He brought with him the northern Methodist tradition of joyful praise and preaching, an ethos of a plain and simple gospel that emphasized "righteous living" and an unbending commitment to emancipation and hope. With Key West under the control of Union forces during much of the Civil War, slaves and free Black people were able to express their desire for independence from white churches more easily there than throughout the rest of the state, and they gravitated to the church that Strong established. During its formative years, the AMEZ became one of the first mainline churches to ordain women to full clerical status. Its ministers commanded great strength in certain cities, and its membership included more of the urban and middle-class population than was typical for southern religious organizations, which were predominantly rural. At its zenith, the AMEZ was one of the largest African-American churches in the state. But it faced difficulties—gender issues, idiosyncratic leadership, rivalries between local ministers and Episcopal authorities, and political dissension at a point when the church was attempting to address larger social issues. In addition, the scourge of hurricanes and yellow fever and citrus crop freezes affected church fortunes. By 1905, when the governor urged the expulsion of all African-Americans from Florida and when state laws mandated racial segregation on public transportation, the era of lynching, discrimination, and disfranchisement already had begun and the period of AMEZ decline had commenced. In this remarkable yet virtually unknown story, the coauthors capture the mood of the post-Civil-War period in Florida, when Black people faced the obstacles and the opportunities that accompanied their new freedom. This work adds significantly to the growing body of literature on African-Americans in Florida and offers keen insights into the nature of institution building within the black community and the greater society.

Peirce's Pragmaticism

release date: Jul 12, 2022
Peirce's Pragmaticism
Praised by Bertrand Russell as “one of the most original minds” and “certainly the greatest American thinker ever,” Charles Sanders Peirce invented “pragmaticism.” Vulgarized by William James and others, Peirce’s revolutionary semiotic recognizes chance, fortuitous happenings, serendipity, in understanding lawful paradigm-shifts in history. Peirce’s thought envisions a process-oriented community of inquirers engaged in confronting urgent social problems by clarifying the groundwork of meanings, beliefs, purposes, ideologies. E. San Juan’s project seeks to excavate the radical resonance of Peirce’s desire for “concrete reasonableness,” an ideal realized in the philosopher’s endeavor to fuse scientific theory and collective praxis, nature and the universal human potential still chained in alienated labor. Peirce’s hypothesis of transforming the conduct of our lives remains not only to be analyzed and interpreted further but also tested in actual practice by future generations of inquirers and activists.

Modern Egypt

Modern Egypt
This second edition of scholar Arthur Goldschmidt presents a concise survey of Egyptian history since the mid-eighteenth century. It focuses on Egypt''s evolution as a nation-state, dispelling common misconceptions about Egypt''s modern history. Professor Goldschmidt calls upon recent Egyptian and Western scholarship to document pivotal points, such as the 1952 revolution, and to illuminate controversies, such as those surrounding Sadat''s role in the 1973 war with Israel. Modern Egypt is anecdotal as well as authoritative, covering social history, religion, politics, economics, military history, geography, and even the psychology of selected leaders. Faruq''s impotence, Nasir''s paranoia, and Sadat''s glamour are all presented as they relate to policy motivations and outcomes. Modern Egypt paves the way to a clear understanding of events leading up to the Camp David accords of 1978 and then points beyond them to the emergent Muslim opposition, Sadat''s assassination, and Mubarak''s regime. This book is directed to students, journalists, diplomats, foreign visitors and long-term residents, and businesspeople who need to be familiar with Egypt, its role in Middle East affairs, and its involvement with the nations of the world."

In this book, we look at three things that Job shows us an example in. May your faith be challenged by and encouraged by this book.

Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Last Interview

Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Last Interview
As the Black Lives Matter movement gains momentum, and books like Ta-Nehisi Coates''s Between the World and Me and Claudia Rankine''s Citizen swing national attention toward the racism and violence that continue to poison our communities, it''s as urgent now as ever to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr., whose insistence on equality and peace defined the Civil Rights Movement and forever changed the course of American history. This collection ranges from an early 1961 interview in which King describes his reasons for joining the ministry (after considering medicine), to a 1964 conversation with Robert Penn Warren, to his last interview, which was conducted on stage at the convention of the Rabbinical Assembly, just ten days before King''s assassination. Timely, poignant, and inspiring, Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Last Interview is an essential addition to the Last Interview series.
