The Many Daughters of Afong Moy
From the New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet comes a powerful novel about the love that binds one family of women across generations. Dorothy Moy breaks her own heart for a living. As Seattle''s former poet laureate, that''s how she describes channeling her dissociative episodes and mental breakdowns into her art. But when her five-year-old daughter, Annabel, exhibits the same behavior and begins remembering things and events she has never experienced, Dorothy believes the past has truly come to haunt the present. If she doesn''t take radical steps, her daughter will be doomed to face the same debilitating depression that has marked her life. Through epigenetic therapy-an experimental treatment designed to mitigate inherited trauma-Dorothy intimately connects with the past generations of women in her family: Faye Moy, a nurse in Burma serving with the Flying Tigers; Afong Moy, the first Chinese woman to set foot in America; Zoe Moy, a student in England at a famous school with no rules; Lai King Moy, a girl quarantined in San Francisco during a plague epidemic; and Greta Moy, a tech executive with a unique dating app. Through reliving their painful stories, Dorothy comes to understand the true cost of inherited pain. As the past bleeds into the present, Dorothy discovers that trauma isn''t the only thing she''s inherited. A stranger is searching for her in each time period. A stranger who''s loved her through all of her genetic memories. And that person is most certainly not her current husband, Louis. To protect her daughter''s future, Dorothy must break the cycle and find a way to cross time and resolve all past traumas, to find the love that has long been waiting, and find peace for Annabel. Even if it means she must sacrifice her only chance at life and happiness

On the Way to Glacier View

release date: Jan 01, 2022
On the Way to Glacier View
This is a history written from the viewpoint of the Fords about what happened before, during, and after The Sanctuary Review Committee, which took place at Glacier View Ranch, Colorado, U.S.A., from August 10-15, 1980. This series of meetings is commonly referred to as the Glacier View conference. Wayne Judd and Adrian Zytkoskee, professorial colleagues, had asked Ford to take an Adventist Forum meeting at Pacific Union College, entitled ''The Investigative Judgment--Theological Milestone or Historical Necessity.'' This took place on October 27, 1979, as a debate with another professor, Dr. Eric Syme. Syme essentially agreed with Ford. The Forum challenged the Adventist doctrine of the investigative judgment, as commonly taught--a counterview that had often been propounded by Adventist scholars who knew the Biblical languages. The result was that Ford had his contract at P.U.C. broken, was pulled out of class, and called to Adventist General Conference headquarters in Washington D.C. He was given six months to write up his 991-page paper ''Daniel 8:14 the Day of Atonement, and the Investigative Judgment''. Administrators and scholars deliberated for a week and the General Conference PREXAD committee with two Australasian representatives met with the Fords. It was clear to the Fords on that Friday, August 15th, 1980, that Des would be defrocked, lose his job, and have his credentials removed. This happened officially on September 18, 1980, at an Australasian Division Executive meeting. Warren Johns, G.C. counsel, and Ken Eastman, Australasian Division solicitor, told Ford separately that he had a case to sue, but Des would never have sued the church.

Side-stepping with Shorty
In "Side-stepping with Shorty," Sewell Ford masterfully captures the essence of early 20th-century American life through the lens of humor and social commentary. This novel is structured around the vivid escapades of the protagonist, Shorty, whose misadventures provide sharp insights into the culture of the time. Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte

release date: Jan 28, 2013
Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte
Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment explains how Mozart''s music for Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte ''sounds'' the intentions of Da Ponte''s characters and their relationships with one another. Mozart, by way of the infinitely generative and beautiful logic of the sonata principle, did not merely interpret Da Ponte''s characterizations but lent them temporal, musical forms. Charles Ford''s analytic interpretation of these musical forms concerns processes and structures in detail and at medium- to long-term levels. He addresses the music of a wide range of arias and ensembles, and develops original ways to interpret the two largely overlooked operatic genres of secco recitative and finales. Moreover, Ford presents a new method by which to relate musical details directly to philosophical concepts, and thereby, the music of the operas to the inwardly contradictory thinking of the European Enlightenment. This involves close readings of late eighteenth-century understandings of ''man'' and nature, self and other, morality and transgression, and gendered identities and sexuality, with particular reference to contemporary writers, especially Goethe, Kant, Laclos, Rousseau, Sade, Schiller, Sterne and Wollstonecraft. The concluding discussion of the implied futures of the operas argues that their divided sexualities, which are those of the Enlightenment as a whole, have come to form our own unquestioned assumptions about gender differences and sexuality. This, along with the elegant and eloquent precision of Mozart''s music, is why Figaro, Giovanni and Così still maintain their vital immediacy for audiences today.

Royal Portraits in Hollywood

release date: Jun 26, 2009
Royal Portraits in Hollywood
Few lives provide as much history or drama as those of monarchs. Filmmakers from the silent era to onward have displayed a deep fascination with the lives of royalty and with queens in particular. Still, the question remains: what do these films really tell us about the women beneath the crowns? Drawing on films from the 1930s to those of today, Royal Portraits in Hollywood: Filming the Lives of Queens investigates the ways in which these films reproduce history and represent women. Though hardly progressive in nature, many early films offered an acceptable, nonthreatening way to present strong female characters in an economic and social landscape run almost exclusively by men. Authors Elizabeth Ford and Deborah Mitchell track the evolution of queens on film, noting how depictions of prominent women have changed over the past several decades and calling attention to the ways in which films both reflect and dictate the social norms of their eras. By comparing historical records of monarchs such as Queen Christina of Sweden, Catherine the Great, Cleopatra, and Elizabeth I with their onscreen personas, and examining the biographical details of the actresses who portrayed these women, Ford and Mitchell present a fascinating inquiry into issues of historical accuracy and gender politics in film.

Racial Culture

release date: Jan 10, 2009
Racial Culture
What is black culture? Does it have an essence? What do we lose and gain by assuming that it does, and by building our laws accordingly? This bold and provocative book questions the common presumption of political multiculturalism that social categories such as race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are defined by distinctive cultural practices. Richard Ford argues against law reform proposals that would attempt to apply civil rights protections to "cultural difference." Unlike many criticisms of multiculturalism, which worry about "reverse discrimination" or the erosion of core Western cultural values, the book''s argument is primarily focused on the adverse effects of multicultural rhetoric and multicultural rights on their supposed beneficiaries. In clear and compelling prose, Ford argues that multicultural accounts of cultural difference do not accurately describe the practices of social groups. Instead these accounts are prescriptive: they attempt to canonize a narrow, parochial, and contestable set of ideas about appropriate group culture and to discredit more cosmopolitan lifestyles, commitments, and values. The book argues that far from remedying discrimination and status hierarchy, "cultural rights" share the ideological presuppositions, and participate in the discursive and institutional practices, of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Ford offers specific examples in support of this thesis, in diverse contexts such as employment discrimination, affirmative action, and transracial adoption. This is a major contribution to our understanding of today''s politics of race, by one of the most distinctive and important young voices in America''s legal academy.

The Search for Meaning

release date: Jan 01, 2007
The Search for Meaning
"In The Search for Meaning: A Short History Ford explores eight approaches human beings have pursued over time to invest life with meaning and to infuse order into a seemingly chaotic universe. These include myth, philosophy, science, postmodernism, pragmatism, archetypal psychology, metaphysics, and naturalism. Ford distills these systems to their bare essentials, answering such questions as, What difference does it make to see the world from a religious point of view or from the perspective of a naturalist? How does a scientific worldview compare with a philosophical one? Ranging widely over intellectual history, Ford investigates the contributions of the Greeks, Kant, and William James, among others, and brings the discussion up to date with contemporary thinkers such as Huston Smith, James Hillman, and Joseph Campbell. The Search for Meaning is an invaluable tool for understanding both the ways people acquire a sense of meaning and the root causes of intractable ethical, political, and cultural conflicts."--BOOK JACKET

The Emergence of Whitehead's Metaphysics, 1925-1929

The Emergence of Whitehead's Metaphysics, 1925-1929
A breathtaking detective story, this book charts the adventure of Whitehead''s ideas in a remarkably detailed and careful reconstruction of his metaphysical views. Incorporating heretofore unpublished material from students'' notes and correspondence, Professor Ford analyzes the order of composition of various portions of Whitehead''s books, principally Science and the Modern World, Religion in the Making, and Process and Reality. Ford''s reconstructive method is perfectly tailored to his subject, for Whitehead revised by inserting new material rather than altering or deleting the old. Thus Ford is able to date the sequence of the composition of many passages. In distinguishing these layers of articulation, he has pushed the techniques of "higher criticism" beyond anything the French structuralists and deconstructionists have dreamed of and chronicled an extraordinary intellectual biography.
