The volume analyses the discourses produced by the higher clergymen in the Upper House of the Hungarian Parliament during Dualism, when essential ecclesiastical and educational policies were debated, in order to highlight the tensions arising between their competing loyalties.

The specialist, as we know it in the modern age, is a creation of modernity. Up until the modern age, scholars were known for their expertise in multiple areas. From Avicenna (Ibn-i Sina) and Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi to Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, many medieval, Renaissance, and Enlightenment scholars were polymaths, mastering knowledge from several fields. The needs of the modern age created specialists focusing deeply on one field. At the convergence of postmodernism and the age of the Internet, social, cultural, and economic realities of increasingly diverse societies have created a new need for the revival of the polymath. Emerging globalization post-Cold War triggered rapid social change that cannot be explained from the perspective of a single discipline. This reality has recently increased the interest in interdisciplinary studies but established academic work that is focused on single disciplines still dominates the academic world and it offers limited opportunities for the publication of interdisciplinary studies. One of the aims of this book is to become one example for interdisciplinary work. It also aims to prepare the ground for the cultivation of scholars that can specialize in more areas on the long term. This book is made out of sixteen articles that bring together different disciplines such as educational sciences, law, linguistics, economics, culture, and sports. All articles passed the referee process. Bearing in mind that the book is the result of a multidisciplinary work, the respect towards each discipline is shown by leaving the referencing and methodology according to the common usage of the relevant discipline. Therefore, some authors have used the Chicago Manual of Style within their articles while others have used the APA system.

Since the early 2000s, reforms in the area of public ethics have represented a significant part in the European Commission''s efforts to improve its internal governance and democratic legitimacy, and address the crisis of public confidence in European integration. This book comprises a study of ethics and public integrity issues in the administrative services of the European Commission. The author traces the reforms implemented in this area since the early 2000s, and asks whether and how they have shaped Commission officials’ thinking about appropriate behaviour in public office. Based on in-depth interviews and the use of vignettes, the book reveals that the influence of ethics regulations is subtle and full of contradictions: while a heightened awareness and discussion of ethical issues exists in the Commission nowadays, the topic is nonetheless often considered as a matter of "common sense". This book breaks new ground as the first analysis of ethics at the level of individual EU officials. It advances a new angle to the study of the Commission as an administrative actor, and sheds light on an important but under-researched component of its efforts to address criticism concerning democratic legitimacy. In the field of administrative ethics, the book tackles research gaps regarding the practice and impact of ethics policies within public organizations. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of EU Studies/Politics, institutional reform, administrative ethics, and more broadly European governance and public policy.

Hannah Arendt, Herbert Marcuse, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and Edward Said each steered major intellectual and political schools of thought in American political discourse after World War II, yet none of them was American, which proved crucial to their ways of arguing and reasoning both in and out of the American context. Intimate Strangers unpacks this "stranger ethos," a blend of detachment and involvement that manifested in the persona of a prophet for Solzhenitsyn, an impartial observer for Arendt, a mentor for Marcuse, and a victim for Said. Yet despite its many successes, the stranger ethos did alienate many audiences, and critics continue to dismiss these thinkers not for their positions but because of their foreign point of view. This book encourages readers to reject this kind of critical xenophobia, throwing support behind a political discourse that accounts for the ideals of citizens and noncitizens alike.

The state of being called nostalgia has a history fraught with ambiguity and poetical connotation. In the late 17th century, nostalgic reminiscences were thought to be the symptoms of a deadly disease that shook one''s mind and body. Today, we view nostalgia not as a medical condition, but as a bittersweet recollection of one''s past joys and sorrows-the memories and treasures of an earlier self. And yet, there remains a category of individuals for whom such recollection can be seriously problematic: immigrants. In Yesterday''s Self, Andreea Ritivoi explores the philosophical and historical dimensions of nostalgia in the lives of immigrants, forging a connection between current trends in the philosophy of identity and intercultural studies.
