The guardians of the Stone of Destiny through the lineage of time have protected this ancient holy relic up into modern times. From the stones introduction to human society to as far as ancient Egypt under the protection and stewardship of Princess Scota, daughter of Nefertiti and sister of Tutankhamun, the relic has traveled through many countries such as the Iberian Peninsula and Ireland, eventually coming to rest in Argyll, Scotland, where the Scots and Irish had adopted her name for their tribes and succession. Through the course of this guardianship, the relic was eventually placed with the Knights Templar, Holy Order of Scotland, and overseen by the Earl of Fife, where we know that through the warring years known better by the scholars as the Hammer of the Scots and the year 1296 specifically, where Edward Longshanks had raided Scotland in order to acquire this important relic. However, if true history is to be known, we may find that all was not as Edward had planned, and having returned to Scotland for a period covering seven years or so, King Longshanks was still not convinced that he had succeeded in his mission and eventually died near Lindisfarne before discovering the truth. As we move into modern times, we may discover that the guardians may have misplaced the holy relic during their tenure and the stone was secreted in various locations through the centuries across Scotland, including the River Tay near Dundee and Dunsinane Castle near Scone, the disputed home of King MacBeth and his wife, Gruogh. In the account that is portrayed within this narrative, we may find that the relic has been, on occasions, vulnerable, and the guardians are pitched against an unknown enemy from within once more as they endeavor to save the stone from modern-day scientific study methods that could destroy the relic for eternity.

Now he engages the modern Scottish Order to assert their military power and authority to deal with unwelcome visitors. How far will the Order go to protect itself?

Among the voyages of exploration and surveying in the late 18th century, that of Alejandro Malaspina best represents the high ideals and scientific interests of the Enlightenment. Italian-born, Malaspina entered the Spanish navy in 1774. In September 1788 he and fellow-officer José Bustamante submitted a plan to the Ministry of Marine for a voyage of survey and inspection to Spanish territories in the Americas and Philippines. The expedition was to produce hydrographic charts for the use of Spanish merchantmen and warships and to report on the political, economic and defensive state of Spain''s overseas possessions. The plan was approved and in July 1789 Malaspina and Bustamante sailed from Cádiz in the purpose-built corvettes, Descubierta and Atrevida. On board the vessels were scientists and artists and an array of the latest surveying and astronomical instruments. The voyage lasted more than five years. On his return Malaspina was promoted Brigadier de la Real Armada, and began work on an account of the voyage in seven volumes to dwarf the narratives of his predecessors in the Pacific such as Cook and Bougainville. Among much else, it would contain sweeping recommendations for reform in the governance of Spain''s overseas empire. But Malaspina became involved in political intrigue. In November 1795 he was arrested, stripped of his rank and sentenced to life imprisonment. Although released in 1803, Malaspina spent the last seven years of his life in obscure retirement in Italy. He never resumed work on the great edition, and his journal was not published in Spain until 1885. Only in recent years has a multi-volume edition appeared under the auspices of the Museo Naval, Madrid, that does justice to the achievements of what for long was a forgotten voyage. This first volume of a series of three contains Malaspina''s diario or journal from 31 July 1789 to 14 December 1790, newly translated into English, with substantial introduction and commentary. Among the places visited and described are Montevideo, Puerto Deseado, Port Egmont, Puerto San Carlos, Valparaíso, Callao, Guayaquil and Panamá. Other texts include Malaspina''s introduction to his intended edition, and his correspondence with the Minister of the Marine before and during the voyage.

Ever since Charles Darwin landed on the Galápagos islands in September 1835, small islands have had a special place in scientific history. In Island epidemics, the authors show that the complex warfare of invasion and extinction observed by Darwin for plants and animals applies today with equal force to the micro-organisms which lie behind many human diseases. Growing from their earlier studies of Iceland and the Fijian islands, they provide a broad world picture of diseases which range from the familiar (influenza and German measles) to the exotic (kuru and tsutsugamushi), and islands which range in remoteness from the nearby Faroes and Scillies to the inaccessible Tristan da Cunha and Easter island. As Darwin argued, islands form natural laboratories in which processes can be observed which are too complex to track in the fast-interacting city worlds, which dominate the crowded continents. The arrival of Ross River virus in the Cook islands or the decline of motor-neurone diseases on Guam can be followed with a precision, which owes much to an islands small size and limited accessibility. The revolution in molecular biology at the end of this century is emphasising how an islands genome, with peoples less mixed than in mainland communities, can provide unique genetic insights into diseases and heredity; the book reports on several examples including the interest in Icelands DNA bank.

The voyage of HMS Herald, under the command of Henry Mangles Denham, encompassed much of the South-west Pacific and substantial parts of the Australian coast. From 1852 to 1861, the Herald surveyed and charted known land masses and suspected hazards, thereby establishing safe routes for shipping. That some of these charts are still in use is testimony to the accuracy and skill of those who created them. Commander David makes extensive use of the journals of Denham and his officers to describe mid-nineteenth-century techniques of surveying and charting, often undertaken in hazardous conditions. His book also provides an unusual and often entertaining view of the difficulties experienced in field work. The collection of natural history specimens, another part of the Herald''s task, resulted in significant additions to British collections. Botanical ornithological discoveries are described using current nomenclature, and the habits of some species now threatened or extinct are examined through the journals of the Ship''s scientists.
