They emigrated in 1737 and settled in Pennsylvania. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Prussia, Holland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Michigan and Montana.

This research aims to present a critique of New Zealand''s colonial period literature as a corollary with contemporary art discourse. The source text Sensorium (2006) written by American art theorist Caroline Jones presents a commentary on the state of modern art and consumer culture in contemporary American society which is considered to be relevant also to early New Zealand settlement. The novels chosen for the contextualising of sight of ''sight, or, the ocular'' occur within the ''Pioneer Period'' of New Zealand''s early literature. Each of the following novels is categorised according to a general theme of settlement: Distant Homes: Or, the Graham Family in New Zealand (1862.) Isabella J. Aylmer; The Counterfeit Seal: A Tale of Otago''s First Settlers (1897) - R.N. Adams; Vicissitudes of Bush Life in Australia and New Zealand (1891) - Dugald Ferguson; The Toll of the Bush (1905) - William Satchell;, Ena, or, the Ancient Maori (1874) - George Wilson; and Wheat in the Ear (1898) - Louisa Baker. These novels are also works belonging to the British nineteenth-century social diaspora. Hence the thesis aims to offer historical meaning its due significance in considering the fictional settler''s response as a ''subject'' of colonisation to the social and natural environment. As a text of the senses Sensorium represents a focus upon the human eye or ''sight'' as a mediating principle. Jones'' art enquiry examines the mediation of art and technology as a phenomenon of the late twentieth-century. The dimension of contemporary art is now, she asserts, a techno-art experience that allows for ''altered states'' (Jones 5). I argue that a discourse of sense experience can evoke narrative subjectivities within the colonial context as constructions or destabilisations of identity. The mediating of ''sight'' will occur through the language component; emphasising three of Jones'' terms of reference: visual ''hegemony'' (7), ''sensory histories'' (18), and ''simulation'' (5) or artifice. For a cross-disciplinary discussion between art language and fictional writing these terms are to provide the critical interface for considering the contingencies or predicaments affecting the colonist emigrants of New Zealand''s historic Wakefieldian settlement period from 1849 and their representation within the plots and characterisations of the novel.

Emotion recognition through facial expression plays a critical role in communication. Review of studies investigating individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and emotion recognition indicates significantly poorer performance compared to controls. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of different media presentation on emotion recognition in individuals with TBI, and if results differ depending on severity of TBI. Adults with and without TBI participated in the study and were assessed using the The Awareness of Social Inferences Test: Emotion Evaluation Test (TASIT:EET) and the Facial Expressions of Emotion-Stimuli and Tests (FEEST) The Ekman 60 Faces Test (E-60-FT). Results indicated that individuals with TBI perform significantly more poorly on emotion recognition tasks compared to age and education matched controls. Additionally, emotion recognition abilities greatly differ between mild and severe TBI groups, and TBI participants performed better with the static presentation compared to dynamic presentation.
