release date: Feb 01, 2012
Life in Ancient Britain
Life in Ancient Britain journeys through the ancient worlds of our ancestors: how they lived, how they shaped the landscape we know today, and how we know what we do, about their achievements. This guide offers a concise and lively introduction to the prehistory of the British Isles – covering the period from around 500,000 years ago when Palaeolithic hunters camped at Boxgrove in West Sussex, through the later Middle and New Stone Ages, and on to the Bronze Age and the start of the Iron Age. It describes how people first came to settle in Britain, and explores the rich mysteries of atmospheric ceremonial meeting places, barrows and stone circles. Also featured is the coming of the age of metals, when warrior-farmers created hilltop forts and settlements, stone brochs and lakeside villages – indeed the Celtic Britain that the Romans found, when they first landed on our shores.

IBM InfoSphere Streams: Assembling Continuous Insight in the Information Revolution

release date: May 02, 2012
IBM InfoSphere Streams: Assembling Continuous Insight in the Information Revolution
In this IBM® Redbooks® publication, we discuss and describe the positioning, functions, capabilities, and advanced programming techniques for IBM InfoSphereTM Streams (V2), a new paradigm and key component of IBM Big Data platform. Data has traditionally been stored in files or databases, and then analyzed by queries and applications. With stream computing, analysis is performed moment by moment as the data is in motion. In fact, the data might never be stored (perhaps only the analytic results). The ability to analyze data in motion is called real-time analytic processing (RTAP). IBM InfoSphere Streams takes a fundamentally different approach to Big Data analytics and differentiates itself with its distributed runtime platform, programming model, and tools for developing and debugging analytic applications that have a high volume and variety of data types. Using in-memory techniques and analyzing record by record enables high velocity. Volume, variety and velocity are the key attributes of Big Data. The data streams that are consumable by IBM InfoSphere Streams can originate from sensors, cameras, news feeds, stock tickers, and a variety of other sources, including traditional databases. It provides an execution platform and services for applications that ingest, filter, analyze, and correlate potentially massive volumes of continuous data streams. This book is intended for professionals that require an understanding of how to process high volumes of streaming data or need information about how to implement systems to satisfy those requirements. See: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247865.html for the IBM InfoSphere Streams (V1) release.

Afghanistan Declassified

release date: Nov 08, 2011
Afghanistan Declassified
Nearly 100,000 U.S. soldiers are deployed to Afghanistan, fighting the longest war in the nation''s history. But what do Americans know about the land where this conflict is taking place? Many have come to have a grasp of the people, history, and geography of Iraq, but Afghanistan remains a mystery. Originally published by the U.S. Army to provide an overview of the country''s terrain, ethnic groups, and history for American troops and now updated and expanded for the general public, Afghanistan Declassified fills in these gaps. Historian Brian Glyn Williams, who has traveled to Afghanistan frequently over the past decade, provides essential background to the war, tracing the rise, fall, and reemergence of the Taliban. Special sections deal with topics such as the CIA''s Predator drone campaign in the Pakistani tribal zones, the spread of suicide bombing from Iraq to the Afghan theater of operations, and comparisons between the Soviet and U.S. experiences in Afghanistan. To Williams, a historian of Central Asia, Afghanistan is not merely a theater in the war on terror. It is a primeval, exciting, and beautiful land; not only a place of danger and turmoil but also one of hospitable villagers and stunning landscapes, of great cultural diversity and richness. Williams brings the country to life through his own travel experiences—from living with Northern Alliance Uzbek warlords to working on a major NATO base. National heroes are introduced, Afghanistan''s varied ethnic groups are explored, key battles—both ancient and current—are retold, and this land that many see as only a frightening setting for prolonged war emerges in three dimensions.
