The Twelve Dancing Princesses

release date: Sep 18, 2018
The Twelve Dancing Princesses
When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children''s and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold--heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers. "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" (or "The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes" or "The Shoes that were Danced to Pieces") is a German fairy tale originally published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 in Kinder- und Hausmarchen as tale number 133. Its closest analogue is the Scottish Kate Crackernuts, where it is a prince who is obliged to dance every night. Includes vintage illustration!

The Complete Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales

release date: Dec 05, 2015
The Complete Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) were German brothers who remained close friends, and both studied law. While Jacob went on to study philology, Wilhelm wrote. The two of them worked on creating a German dictionary, but it would not be finished until long after they were both dead. The Brothers would be lost to history, except they also collaborated on a collection of 200 fairy tales and published two volumes of them in 1812 and 1814. Although their intention was purely to preserve the material and try to keep the German culture and history alive, their collection proved to be massively popular with young children. The first English translation arrived in 1823, making them a must read for children ever since.

Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm - Illustrated by Kay Nielsen

release date: Apr 16, 2013
Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm - Illustrated by Kay Nielsen
The Brothers Grimm are perhaps the best known folklorists of all time. This collection of the Brothers Grimm Stories brings together some of their best known and loved tales, such as: ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘The Valiant Little Tailor’, ‘Rapunzel’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ and ‘The Golden Goose’. The Brothers Grimm (or Die Brüder Grimm), Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors – who together specialized in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of their collected tales has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. Hansel and Gretel and other Brothers Grimm Stories is accompanied by the dazzling colour and black and white illustrations of Kay Nielsen (1886 – 1957). Nielsen was a Danish artist belonging to the golden age of illustration. He was influenced by Japanese art and the Swedish folklore – becoming a crucial participant in the Art Nouveaux movement. His art is characterised by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre, yet ephemeral quality. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate the Brothers Grimm’s masterful storytelling.

Selected Tales of the Brothers Grimm

release date: Mar 15, 2013
Selected Tales of the Brothers Grimm
This new edition of the beloved tales of the Brothers Grimm – selected, translated and edited by Peter Wortsman - is drawn from the 1857 edition of the German original, the last edition reviewed and approved by the Brothers in their lifetime. Over the years, the Brothers'' enigmatic narratives have been sanitized by Disney and children''s book editors for modern consumption; this indispensable edition restores their sting and vigor to the original prose. In Wortsman’s words, his translation is a return to "a tincture of concentrated man-eating ogre and ground hag tooth, diluted in blood, sweat and tears, as a potent vaccine against the crippling effects of fear and fury." These fortifying imaginative vaccines are accompanied by twenty-four full-color illustrations by Haitian artists, including Edouard Duval-Carrié, Pascale Monnin, and Frankétienne. Edwidge Danticat observes that many Haitian painters bring "forth another canvas beneath the one we see." These works’ imaginative scope, vitality, and evocation of the unconscious open deep channels between the two traditions, shedding new light and shadow on the classic tales.
