Cancer Genomics

release date: Nov 21, 2013
Cancer Genomics
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a clonal proliferation of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow (BM), associated with a monoclonal protein and end-organ damage. MM originates from a pre-malignant condition, called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and can progress to an extramedullary disease, termed plasma cell leukemia (PCL), which invades the bloodstream. MM cells manifest a wide spectrum of genomic abnormalities, creating a strong intertumoral heterogeneity. Historically, MM patients have been divided into two subgroups: hyperdiploid cases (with u003e46 chromosomes) and non-hyperdiploid cases. However, the introduction of novel technologies such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) and sequencing techniques is helping to unveil the complexity of MM genomes. In particular, MM cells present: recurrent translocations which deregulate known oncogenes, such as CCND1, FGFR3-MMSET, c-MAF and MYC, numerous copy number variations (CNVs) including deletion of chromosome 13, deletion of chromosome 17p13, and amplification of chromosome 1q21; and various somatic mutations in genes involved in cancer proliferation (RAS, BRAF, FGFR3), protein homeostasis and RNA processing (FAM46C, DIS3, XBP1 and LRRK2); NF-κB signaling; histone methylation; and tumor suppression (TP53). This chapter will summarize our current knowledge of the MM genomic field, focusing on the different types of abnormalities and their relationship with the phases of disease.

Crime and the Politics of Hysteria

Anderson''s compelling book is both an investigation of and a mediation on the way some politicians and institutions play on our deepest fears, exploiting them shamelessly.

Bottom-line Organization Development

release date: Jan 01, 2003
Bottom-line Organization Development
Organization development practitioners have, for over half a century, engaged with organizations to help them grow and thrive. The artful application of Organization Development (OD) has helped business leaders articulate vision, rethink business processes, create more fluid organization structures and better utilize people''s talents. While business leaders and OD practitioners intuitively believe that OD provides valuable results, rigorous measurement of the value delivered has long eluded many OD practitioners. ''Bottom-Line Organization Development'' provides powerful tools to capture and measure the financial return on investment (ROI) of OD projects to the business. Given the increasing competition for budget and resources within organizations and the requirements of demonstrating tangible results, the need for such OD measurement tools is very high. But in addition to proving the value of OD projects, integrating evaluation into the change management process itself can actually increase the value of the change initiative because it opens up new ways of capturing and increasing the value of change initiatives. In other words, there is an ROI to ROI. Merrill Anderson calls this new way of approaching OD "strategic change valuation." The book explains the five steps in the OD value process - diagnosis, design, deployment, evaluation and reflection. In addition, three case studies take readers through the process of applying bottom-line OD to three types of popular strategic change initiatives: executive coaching, organization capability, and knowledge management. Readers will gain a holistic perspective of how to make the seemingly intangible benefits of these initiatives tangible.

Voices from a Southern Prison

release date: Aug 15, 2011
Voices from a Southern Prison
Rats, tainted food, leaky sewage pipes: they only began to hint at the anarchy inside the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange. A barracks-style “warehouse” prison straight out of an old mobster film, KSR was three-quarters over its intended capacity by 1978. It had become a sickening, dangerous place, where an inmate could get his hands on a sawed-off shotgun more easily than a clean towel. That year a handful of KSR prisoners managed to send a plea for help to the federal court in Louisville. The petitioners expected reprisals or, maybe worse, silence. But the letter reached a caring judge, and the prisoners had spoken up at a crucial moment in Kentucky reform politics. The signs seemed right to take on the old-boy network whose byword on prison conditions was “ain’t no riots, ain’t no problems.” The suit was settled in the KSR prisoners’ favor in 1981, paving the way for controversial, protracted, and expensive reforms. Written by Lloyd C. Anderson, the head of the KSR prisoners’ legal team, Voices from a Southern Prison quotes extensively from recollections of many players in the case, from the judge who presided over it to the journalist who put it in the headlines. Most important, we hear from three inmates who emerged as leaders among their fellow plaintiffs: James “Shorty” Thompson, Wilgus Haddix, and Walter Harris. As our nation’s penal system expands on an unprecedented scale, the KSR scandal offers timely lessons about entrenched attitudes toward prisons. Thus far, says Anderson, they seem lost on the strategists of our “War on Crime.”
