The 50 Greatest Red Sox Games

release date: Mar 10, 2006
The 50 Greatest Red Sox Games
Advance Praise for THE 50 GREATEST RED SOX GAMES "Here''s the deal. It costs about $43 for a grandstand seat at Fenway Park these days, unless you buy the ticket from a scalper, which makes the cost $2 million. If you went to just 50 games of any dimension that means the cost would be either $2,150 or $100 million. Here, for considerably less, you get the 50 greatest games the Red Sox ever played plus tight prose, snappy anecdotes, and reasoned judgments. Bargains like this don''t come often. Plus, you don''t even have to pay for parking." --Leigh Montville, author of Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero "It''s a daunting task, but Cecilia Tan and Bill Nowlin have come up with the Red Sox greatest hits album, the box set. Enjoy." --Dan Shaughnessy, author of Reversing the Curse "Old Towne Team fans will think they have died and gone to heaven with The 50 Greatest Red Sox Games in their grasp. Informative, exciting, entertaining . . . Cecilia Tan and Bill Nowlin have done a good deed for the Fenway faithful." --Harvey Frommer, coauthor of Red Sox vs. Yankees: The Great Rivalry

The 50 Greatest Yankee Games

release date: May 13, 2005
The 50 Greatest Yankee Games
"Cecilia Tan has written a Yankee Doodle Dandy of a book. The reader is taken through the dramatic ebb and flow of the 50 greatest Yankee games. We learn a lot about the team from the Bronx in this fact-filled, entertainingly written opus. Should be required reading for all fans of the New York Yankees." --Harvey Frommer, author of A Yankee Century and The New York Yankee Encyclopedia Every Yankee fan has a memory they will never forget or a game they wish they had seen. Covering an entire century of New York Yankees baseball, The 50 Greatest Yankee Games brings together the best (and sometimes worst) moments experienced by the most successful sports franchise on the planet. You''ll be there as: * Babe Ruth performs the most debated gesture in sports history * Joe DiMaggio reaches one milestone on his way to another * "The Wild Man" tames the Dodgers, but the Bombers fail to score * Bobby Murcer delivers the game-winning hit just hours after delivering the eulogy at Thurman Munson''s funeral * Dave Righetti throws his no-hitter against the Red Sox * Don Mattingly shines, but Seattle savors the day * Derek Jeter saves the game and the season with a "shovel pass" From the Yankees'' first World Series to the pennant race that pitted Joe DiMaggio against Ted Williams to the Bucky Dent home run game, you''ll have the best seat in the stadium as you experience all the excitement and drama. Featuring fascinating anecdotes and vintage photographs, The 50 Greatest Yankee Games is the perfect book for every Yankee fan and anyone who cherishes the game. "Tan does a fine job choosing the most important contests from 100 seasons of Yankee baseball and recounting them in a gripping style . . . developing entertaining, dramatic story lines." --Publisher''s Weekly

Black Feathers

Black Feathers
In this groundbreaking collection Cecilia Tan blurs the very definition of sexuality and redefines the future of erotic fiction. She delves deep into the world of dark fantasy in a powerful collection of stories that interweave the supernatural and science fiction with the fantasy of daydream; she brilliantly combines noir erotica at its most potent with startling sensuality to shatter the physical and emotional boundaries of sex. These stories, some never before published, range in style and texture from the warmth of magical realism to disturbing modern gothic -- showcasing a rich and varied exploration of sex in worlds that might be earthtly -- to tales of the human fantasies and magical dreams to which we all succumb. From the critically acclaimed, otherwordly "Pearl Driver" to "The Game," all of Tan''s stories celebrate the body and sex, revealing the positive emotions behind even the darkest desires.

The National Pastime, Summer 2014 Issue

The National Pastime, Summer 2014 Issue
This issue of The National Pastime is dedicated to baseball in Houston since 1961. Each annual issue of TNP has centers on the geographic area of SABR’s national convention summer site. In 2014 the convention took place in Houston, Texas. The local chapter (named for former Houston Astro Larry Dierker) produced a coffee-table book cover HOUSTON BASEBALL up to 1961, so this issue of The National Pastime focuses on the space age and the arrival of Major League Baseball in the region. So here we have a special issue centered almost entirely on the Houston Astros (né Colt .45s) and their two influential and iconic homes, short-lived Colt Stadium and the Astrodome. The Houston MLB franchise has amassed more than its share of history in the five-plus decades since their launch. A well-worn adage is “everything is bigger in Texas,” and that certainly applies to the role of the Astrodome in pop culture, and to the outsize personality of team owner Roy Hofheinz, who was one part P.T. Barnum, two parts George Steinbrenner, and all Texan. If you weren’t able to attend the convention in Houston, please enjoy reading this issue of The National Pastime as your virtual trip to “Space City” in the Lone Star State will employ seventeen SABR members as your tour guides: Contents Introduction by Cecilia Tan Houston’s Role in the Initiation of Sunday Night Baseball by Bill McCurdy Movies, Bullfights, and Baseball, Too: A Sports Stadium Built for Spectacle First and Sports Second by Eric Robinson Wooing Women Fans:The Houston Astros by Will Flaherty The Colt .45s and the 1961 Expansion Draft by Stephen D.
