"The text covers some of the material covered in most university under-graduate courses in applied mathematics. I have tried to steer a middle course between side-stepping and glossing over difficult points in the theory on the one hand and including too much rigour, to the detriment of the general reader's understanding, on the other. The text includes numerous examples worked out in detail and it is hoped that these will both illustrate some of the applications of the theory and help towards a better understanding of the theory itself. On the whole new mathematical techniques have been kept separate from their applications which appear later. This has been thought desirable as I feel that students in general have great difficulty trying to assimilate both the new techniques and their applications, simultaneously. This means however that the reader is, in places, asked to learn new techniques while taking it largely on trust that applications will in fact appear later." -- Author's preface.
