Charles Perrault's Fairy Tales
Life is not easy, especially for pretty girls: they are often devoured by wolves or ill-treated by their sisters, mothers, fathers and husbands. As for boys, when they are ugly, they can also be tormented. Actually, there is always a cruel ogre looking for fresh flesh! The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault (Wisehouse Classics Edition - with Original Color Illustrations by Harry Clarke)
CHARLES PERRAULT (12 January 1628 - 16 May 1703) was a French author and member of the Academie Francaise. He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales. The best known of his tales include Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botte (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois Dormant (The Sleeping Beauty), and Barbe Bleue (Bluebeard). Some of Perrault''s versions of old stories may have influenced the German versions published by the Brothers Grimm more than 100 years later. The stories continue to be printed and have been adapted to opera, ballet (such as Tchaikovsky''s The Sleeping Beauty), theatre, and film. Perrault was an influential figure in the 17th-century French literary scene, and was the leader of the Modern faction during the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. This edition is an athoritative translation by Robert Samber and J. E. Mansion, with the original color illustrations and ornamentations by Harry Clarke."

Tales of Passed Times - Illustrated by Charles Robinson
Tales of Passed Times'' is a collection of Charles Perrault''s fairy tales, accompanied by the beautiful illustrations of Charles Robinson. A French nobleman and writer, Perrault (1628-1703) was among the first authors to bring magical children''s stories into the literary mainstream, proving to their original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. The stories in this particular text include such favorites as ''Blue Beard'', ''Little Red Riding-Hood'', ''Sleeping Beauty'', ''Puss in Boots'' and ''Cinderella'' as well as other, less well known tales such as ''Riquet of the Tuft'', ''Little Thumbling'' and ''Princess Rosette.'' These stories are accompanied by a set of dazzling colored illustrations from a true master of the ''Golden Age of Illustration'' - Charles Robinson (1870-1937). An active painter in his own right, and brother of the famous Thomas and William Heath Robinson, his illustrations still delight both young and old over a century later. Robinson started his illustrative career with 100 pen and ink drawings for A Child’s Garden of Verses (1895). The book was an instant hit, and from that point onwards, Robinson continued to illustrate fairy tales and children’s books – with his characteristic style of subtle line, combined with delicate watercolours. The fairy tales in their original translations are presented here, alongside Robinson''s beautiful images. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

Child-Eater

Child-Eater
The folktale of Hansel And Gretel has its origins in stories from various European countries, relating to periods of extreme famine when families were often driven to murder, and even cannibalize, their own offspring in order to survive. As well as featuring such horror staples as an evil witch, a dark forest, and the cooking and devouring of human flesh, it also stands as the blueprint for tales of children in jeopardy. This special ebook collection of texts relating to the Hansel And Gretel legend starts with the definitive Grimms version from 1812, followed by an earlier Italian variant, Giambattista Basile’s Nennillo And Nennella (1674). It also features two classic tales from France: Le Petit Poucet (“Hop O’My Thumb”) by Charles Perrault (1697), and Finette Cendron (“Cunning Cinders”) by Madame d''Aulnoy (1721); both of these works feature elements (abandoned children, incinerating cannibal monsters) which would later crystallize in the Grimms classic. As a bonus, this collection also includes two parallel tales of Baba Yaga, the cannibal witch of Russian legend: Baba Yaga, and Baba Yaga And Vasilissa The Beautiful, both dating from the 19th century. With a cover illustration by Arthur Rackham.

The Complete Fairy Tales
Charles Perrault''s versions gave classic status to the humble fairy tale, and it is in his telling that the stories of Little Red Riding-Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and the rest have been passed down from the seventeenth century to the present day. Perrault''s tales were enjoyed in the salons of Louis XIV as much as they were loved in the nursery, and it is their wit, humour, and lively detail that capture the imagination of adult and child alike. They transmute into vivid fantasies the hidden fears and conflicts by which children are affected: fears of abandonment, or worse, conflicts with siblings and parents, and the trials of growing up. This new translation by Christopher Betts exactly captures the tone and flavour of Perrault''s world, and the delightful spirit of the originals. In addition to the familiar stories, this edition also includes the three verse tales - the troubling account of patient Griselda, the comic Three Silly Wishes, and the notorious Donkey-Skin. The introduction explores the nature of the stories and how they have been interpreted; Gustave Doré''s wonderful illustrations add a further dimension to their imaginative power.

The Master Cat, Or Puss in Boots
Puss in Boots is one of the most famous of Charles Perrault''s tales. It was first published in 1697 in a collection of eight fairy tales called Histoires ou contes du temps passé (Stories or Tales of Past Times). Since that time, Puss in Boots has become a very popular character and has appeared in films, cartoons and comics. Despite its popularity, the tale has been criticised by some people. For example, George Cruikshank, the British caricaturist and book illustrator, wrote, "When I came to look carefully at that story, I felt compelled to rewrite it, and alter the character of it to a certain extent, for, as it stood, the tale was a succession of successful falsehoods - a clever lesson in lying, a system of imposture rewarded by the greatest worldly advantages! - a useful lesson, truly, to be impressed upon the minds of children." This edition includes remarkable illustrations by Walter Crane. Crane''s work on children''s books in cooperation with the publisher Edmund Evans earned him worldwide fame in the late 19th century. (For more fairy tales of Charles Perrault with illustrations by Walter Crane see ISBN 978-1468141184).
