Crash Start

Crash Start
In 1940 a first-year student at Oxford gave up his legal studies to serve his country in its time of need. He served with valour and distinction, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross for developing and then delivering battlewinning tactics that protected the flanks of the D-Day landings. But Guy Hudson also saw things that cannot be unseen, and experienced the horrors of war that become tattooed on one''s soul. This is the story of a brave and patriotic sailor who helped sink the German battleship Bismarck, drove his Motor Torpedo Boat into enemy harbours right under the muzzles of Axis guns, and then pioneered radar control procedures for the small torpedo and gun boats that careered across pitch-dark maritime battlefields to guard the Allied landings in northern France. It is also the story of a man who turned to alcohol to control the darker memories created by war, and whose life and business collapsed due to the demon of drink, before he was rescued by his second wife. His legacy now lives on at the University of Oxford through the Guy Hudson Memorial Trust - this biography is his tribute.

The Patient Chef

The Patient Chef
They say cancer touches everyone, and I''m certainly no exception, so in many ways it was natural for me to volunteer and then work as a staff member at the Sydney Cancer Foundation - which later became Chris O''Brien Lifehouse. Over a period of time I found myself talking at length to patients and families of those undergoing treatment, where the topic of food came up often. It was often disconcerting for patients to find that their appetites and tastes had been affected. It was hard too for families who wanted to nourish their family member to wellness. Yet what so often emerged from these conversations were hard-won tips, tricks, and recipes that people had discovered "worked" for them and were keen to share with others. It was from this generosity of spirit that the idea for this book was formed. There are many books by nutritionists on how to beat cancer, but little for those at the coalface. So I set about collecting the recipes and stories from patients, families and those that work with them. Chris O''Brien''s kindness and humanity were legendary among patients whom he had treated, and many saw it as an opportunity to support the work of the organisation he founded. I''m delighted to be able to complete the circle, and support it in my own small way, now that his visionary idea for a single integrated centre for cancer research, patient diagnosis and treatment has become a reality.

Temple Landscapes

release date: Feb 28, 2021
Temple Landscapes
The ERC-funded FRAGSUS Project (Fragility and sustainability in small island environments: adaptation, cultural change and collapse in prehistory, 2013-18), led by Caroline Malone (Queens University Belfast) has explored issues of environmental fragility and Neolithic social resilience and sustainability during the Holocene period in the Maltese Islands. This, the first volume of three, presents the palaeo-environmental story of early Maltese landscapes. The project employed a program of high-resolution chronological and stratigraphic investigations of the valley systems on Malta and Gozo. Buried deposits extracted through coring and geoarchaeological study yielded rich and chronologically controlled data that allow an important new understanding of environmental change in the islands. The study combined AMS radiocarbon and OSL chronologies with detailed palynological, molluscan and geoarchaeological analyses. These enable environmental reconstruction of prehistoric landscapes and the changing resources exploited by the islanders between the seventh and second millennia bc. The interdisciplinary studies combined with excavated economic and environmental materials from archaeological sites allows Temple landscapes to examine the dramatic and damaging impacts made by the first farming communities on the islands'' soil and resources. The project reveals the remarkable resilience of the soil-vegetational system of the island landscapes, as well as the adaptations made by Neolithic communities to harness their productivity, in the face of climatic change and inexorable soil erosion. Neolithic people evidently understood how to maintain soil fertility and cope with the inherently unstable changing landscapes of Malta. In contrast, second millennium bc Bronze Age societies failed to adapt effectively to the long-term aridifying trend so clearly highlighted in the soil and vegetation record. This failure led to severe and irreversible erosion and very different and short-lived socio-economic systems across the Maltese islands.

Continuous Delivery with Windows and .NET

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Continuous Delivery with Windows and .NET
For Windows and .NET developers, Continuous Delivery (CD) is no longer just a theory, but a very practical option. With this concise book, you''ll learn how to use modern Windows and .NET software with third-party and open source tools to automate the frequent software builds, testing, and deployments that CD prescribes. Although CD has become a well-defined set of practices and approaches to releasing software in a reliable way, many tools commonly used for CD aren''t natively available for Windows. But new and forthcoming features in Windows Server 2016 and Visual Studio 2015 are designed with CD in mind. The tips and advice in this book will help you pursue CD for Windows- and .NET-based software. Specifically, you''ll learn about: Version control practices, technologies, and branching options Options for Continuous Integration servers, version control systems, build automation, and package management for Windows and .NET Tools that work well for visualizing and orchestrating a CD deployment pipeline Infrastructure automation, using a test-first approach with Vagrant virtual machines and Microsoft Azure, and--coming soon--Docker for Windows-specific workloads The tricky bits: making changes to your organization and practices beyond adopting the technologies and techniques already discussed.

Tour de Bathroom

Tour de Bathroom
Three childhood friends come back together to find out who has the Best Bathroom in America. Why? Because, for cousins Brad and Mark Godfrey, life has always been about bathrooms. They are the great-grandsons of the guy who invented the urinal cake, aka the pink hockey puck deodorizer found in men''s public bathrooms. That invention led to a super successful company in the 1900''s, but hard times have hit in the 21st century; especially around the time of the 2008 recession. The young Godfrey boys are determined to restore the Godfrey name with a new invention of their own. Their idea? A smart toilet that will allow people to check their health from toilet to phone. Brad''s been working day and night on the technology, and Mark is the sales guy. They figure what better way to promote the new app than planning a nationwide tour, asking the country to vote for their favorite public restroom. But the third friend might derail the entire tour. Tim Bartleby is about to start dating Emma Lawrence, which is great, except for the fact that Brad and Emma were high school sweethearts. Can Tim and Brad remain best friends with this new development? Or, the biggest worry for Tim, will Emma and Brad someday get back together? Note: Tour de Bathroom is Book 2 of the larger work "Toilet Bowl."

FDI Location Decisions in R & D

release date: Jan 01, 2009
FDI Location Decisions in R & D
The attraction of foreign direct investment (FDI) by multinational firms has played a central role in Ireland''s economic growth, and continues to do so. However, industrial strategy now places increasing emphasis on the importance of attracting R&D investment by MNCs. Ireland has faced an unusual challenge in attempting to strengthen its R&D base at a relatively late stage in its economic growth path, in the process attempting to accelerate or even bypass the normal evolutionary path of such investment patterns in R&D. We can deduce from the literature that this is a difficult challenge, given that Ireland has a relatively high cost base, a small local market size, and a relatively weak R&D track record,. This study analyses four cases of R&D programmes involving collaboration between industry and university research teams, two from ICT sectors and two from the Biopharmaceuticals industry. The study firstly considers the commercial context for each case, and the motivation and dynamics driving the firms'' business decisions. Secondly, it considers the characteristics of knowledge development evident in each case, from the perspectives of stage of knowledge evolution, position in the innovation value chain, tacit versus explicit knowledge, range of disciplines involved, and modular structure of knowledge. Finally it considers the links that are important for each R&D programme, whether from other parts of the firm or external partners in the innovation process. The findings emphasise the relatively informal and evolutionary nature of the decision-making and the role of both company experience and cultural affinity in influencing the programmes. The nature of the relationship with local university teams is found to be a more critical factor in shaping the value and knowledge characteristics of projects than even the differences in industry sector.
