Social Constitution and Fetishistic Social Domination in Marx, Lukács, Adorno, and Lefebvre

release date: May 07, 2026
Social Constitution and Fetishistic Social Domination in Marx, Lukács, Adorno, and Lefebvre
The Marxian theory of fetishism is usually interpreted as a theory of false consciousness, alienation, or reification pertaining to commodities or culture. This book reconstructs how Marx, Lukács, Adorno, and Lefebvre interpret and use the theory of the fetish to explain how capitalist social relations create a supra-individual, autonomous, and inverted form of social domination. These relations transform individuals into bearers of domination, thereby perpetuating capitalist society. The resulting reinterpretations of their respective social theories, and of the theory of the fetish, are crucial for a critical theory of capitalism today.

Rebel Rebel

release date: Jul 08, 2025
Rebel Rebel
David Bowie: every single song. Everything you want to know, everything you didn''t know. The legacy of David Bowie is roughly 450 songs, which he recorded or performed over half a century. They range from cabaret to psychedelia to folk rock to glam rock to Philadelphia soul, from avant-garde instrumentals to stadium anthems. Cataloging Bowie’s songs from the dawn of his career in 1963 to his Hollywood stardom in 1976, examining them in the order of their composition and recording, and digging into what makes them work, Rebel Rebel and its sequel Ashes to Ashes have become standard references for Bowie fans. The new edition of Rebel Rebel is a fully-updated revision, taking into account Bowie demos and alternate takes released in the years after his death. It’s enhanced by a decade’s worth of new information about Bowie’s recording process, his influences, his contemporaries, and his live performances, all of which shed light onto the evolution of his songwriting. It shows how Bowie exploited studio innovations, and delves into the roles of his supporting musicians, particularly major collaborators like Mick Ronson and Tony Visconti. This book aligns Bowie’s music with his times, planting his work in the context of its era. You’ll see what Bowie’s work owes to novelists like Keith Waterhouse, Jack Kerouac, George Orwell, Ray Bradbury, and William S. Burroughs. To films like Performance, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and A Clockwork Orange. To rival songwriters and performers like Marc Bolan, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Elvis Presley, the Bee Gees, Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Pete Townshend, and John Lennon. With guest appearances by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Cher.

Public Service Motivation?

release date: May 27, 2022
Public Service Motivation?
Chris O’Leary looks afresh at the reasons for prosocial work choices in the first substantive critique of Public Service Motivation (PSM). With critical analysis of theoretical and empirical research to date, this book explores the pros and cons of PSM and interrogates the reasons why people choose to work in the public and third sectors. It proposes an alternative theory for the pursuit of service, rooted in rational choice theory, that shows public servants are expressly motivated to confirm their values and identity through their work. For those involved in public policy, administration and management, this is a constructive and stimulating review of an important but often neglected aspect of the sector.

Torpedoes, Tea, and Medals

release date: Mar 24, 2022
Torpedoes, Tea, and Medals
A biography chronicling one man''s service during World War II as a Royal Navy commander and his career before & after in the tea business. Jake Wright''s initiation to war was on the beach at Dunkirk, helping evacuate stragglers. Then volunteering for Motor Torpedo Boats, he served with valor throughout World War II, becoming one of only forty-four officers in WWII to receive a DSC with two Bars . . . Derek Wright learned about small boats from his father, who tragically died when Derek was just fourteen years old. Sent away from his family to finish his education, he left school at sixteen to join the global tea trade. Soon after he finished his training with Brooke Bond, famous for their "Dividend" tea, Hitler invaded Poland and Britain was at war. By then known to his friends as "Jake," he was one of the first Volunteer Reserves to be called up to fight for his country. Plucked from his naval training in HMS King Alfred, his warfighting initiation was on the beach at Dunkirk, helping evacuate stragglers after Operation DYNAMO. He then volunteered for Motor Torpedo Boats, where he served with valor and distinction. While Hitler''s U-Boats were torpedoing shipments of tea bound for Great Britain, Jake Wright reciprocated by torpedoing Axis coastal shipping off Europe. His first Command was MTB 331, trained for a daredevil mission to puncture German boom defenses protecting their battleships. In his next Command, MTB 32, he was wounded in action whilst torpedoing a German convoy, but kept his small ship fighting against the odds to win the action and sink his enemy; for his bravery he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Further acts of gallantry in action, combined with tactical innovation, saw him earn two bars to his DSC as well as a Mention in Despatches; he became one of only forty-four officers in the Second World War to receive a DSC with two Bars. After demobilization he returned to the tea trade, rising to become one of Brooke Bond''s senior directors supplying Britain''s beloved beverage. He even helped refine how to make the perfect cup of tea. This is the life story of a determined, brave, innovative, and decorated officer who has earned a place in the hearts of our nation. It is the story of Derek "Jake" Wright, DSC**. Praise for Torpedoes, Tea, and Medals "A must read . . . an enthralling look at motor torpedo boat operations off the coast of France and Belgium during World War II." — Naval Historical Foundation "Wright clearly had a really action-packed war and this book skillfully combines his coastal forces experiences with his influential role in the tea business." —Captain Andrew Welch, FNI, Royal Navy Retired

Payment by Results and Social Impact Bonds

release date: Feb 28, 2018
Payment by Results and Social Impact Bonds
As public services budgets are cut, the ‘Payment by Results’ (or Pay for Success) model has become a popular choice in public sector commissioning. Social Impact Bonds are a variant of Payment by Results also promoted by proponents of social (or impact) investing. But how effective are these approaches? This short book asks whether the Payment by Results model is an efficient way to unlock new capital investment, help new providers to enter the ‘market’ and foster innovation, or whether the extension of ‘neoliberal’ thinking, complexity and the effects of managerialism undermine the effective delivery of social outcomes. Synthesising lessons from the UK and US for the first time, the book draws on published work in both countries together with insights from the authors’ own research and consultancy experience to offer a balanced and bipartisan overview of a field where the evidence has been weak and there are strong ideological agendas in play.

Acting for the Silent Screen

release date: Nov 30, 2016
Acting for the Silent Screen
A shop girl wins a newspaper competition and is transformed overnight into a transatlantic celebrity. An aristocrat swaps high society for the film studio when she ''consents'' to perform in a series of films, thus legitimising acting for what some might have considered a ''low'' art. Stories like these were the stuff of newspaper headlines in 1920s and reflected a ''craze'' for the cinema. They also demonstrated radical changes in attitudes and values within society in the wake of World War I. Chris O''Rourke investigates the myths and material practices that grew up around film actors during the silent era. The book sheds light on issues such as the social and cultural reception of cinema, the participatory film culture expressed through fan magazines, instructional booklets and movie star competitions, and the working conditions encountered by actors behind-the-scenes of silent films. Drawing on extensive research and a wealth of archival materials, O''Rourke examines how dreams of stardom were fuelled and exploited in the interwar period, and reconstructs the personal narratives and experiences of the first generation to imagine making a living on screen. In doing so, he reveals a missing - and much sought after - piece of cinematic history to bring to life the developing industries, social attitudes and norms of a period of enormous change.
