ABSTRACT: High-speed machining operations use various types of tool holders designed with certain characteristics in mind. Two opposing design parameters for tool holders include precision finishing and high metal removal rate operations that can afford lower precision. However, standards in tool holder connection characterization do not exist. Information gathered from this thesis can be used to create a standard method for comparing tool holder to tool joint parameters of various tool holder styles. The tool holders tested were from various manufacturers including Lyndex, Parlec, Kennametal, Command, Tec Nara, Briney, and Shrinker. Static, dynamic, and finite element analysis was conducted with 1/4", 1/2", high speed steel, and carbide tooling. The information gathered from all these tests characterizes the effective joint parameters of the tool holder to tool connection. The data can be used to gauge each tool holder''s effectiveness in certain machining operations.

Technological development is one of the main drivers in economic progress throughout the world and is strongly linked to the creation of new industries, jobs, and wealth. This thesis attempts to better understand how a specific technological field develops over time and to examine the policy implications resulting from that research. In order to research the specific field, we present a repeatable method to identify and describe the important innovations in an industry, using the solar photovoltaic industry as a case study. A set of 2484 patented inventions in the solar PV industry between 1961 and 2011 was selected and their metadata and textual information were analyzed using a mixture of qualitative, quantitative and objective tests. Within the patent set, a group of most highly cited patents was located and defined. We found that these highly cited patents improved on technologies across different technological hierarchy levels and that the hierarchy levels did not appear to follow any pattern over time. When compared with other patents in the set of 2484, the highly cited patents, contrary to some conjectures, did not apparently rely more on new scientific discoveries as they did not cite scientific literature more frequently than less cited patents. These findings support the theory that even the most important developments in a field are part of an integrated system and cannot be treated as standalone improvements. The work also indicates that ascribing the bulk of progress to "breakthroughs" is not seen in objective data. The thesis continues with an analysis of how these findings may apply to innovation polices in organizations. Finally, technological innovation strategies within MIT, Stanford and the United States Air Force are analyzed through the lens of the model constructed from the findings.

The model compared favorably with the measured changes in ad at times when, apparently, no input of CDOM occurred. This result underscores the importance of photobleaching in driving the changes in optical properties observed seasonally in the surface waters of lakes.

A common challenge in environmental impact studies and frontier exploration is identifying the properties of some emitters from remotely obtained concentration data. For example, consider estimating the volume of some pollutant that a chemical refinery releases into the atmosphere from measurements of pollutant concentrations. Previous methods assume a known number of emitters, low ambient concentrations, or measurements from a group of stationary sensors. In contrast, we use measurements from a mobile sensor and detect source contributions that are several orders of magnitude smaller than ambient concentrations. Here, we develop and analyze a method for inferring the location, emission rate, and number of emitters from measurements taken by an aircraft. We use Reversible-jump Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling to jointly infer the posterior distribution of the number of emitters and emitter properties. Additionally, we develop performance metrics that can be efficiently computed using the sample-based representation of the posterior distribution. We investigate the expected performance of the inference algorithm with respect to certain model parameters in a series of synthetic experiments and use these performance metrics for evaluation. These experiments provide insight into subtleties of the model, including the identifiability of source configurations, the effect of various path geometries, and the effects of incorporating data from multiple flights. We also provide intuition for best-case performance when running on real-world data using a synthetic experiment. Finally, we demonstrate our ability to process and analyze real-world data for which the true source configuration is unknown.
