Pixie Annat
Isobel Mary "Pixie" Annat grew up in rural Queensland and trained to be a nurse shortly after World War II. Working first at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, she went on to forge an extraordinary career as matron, then CEO, of St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital in Brisbane. Pixie Annat: Champion of Nurses draws on anecdotes from Pixie's personal journey and documents the important contributions made by medical colleagues during her more than 50-year career working in healthcare. It also recounts her years as a leader of the Royal Australian Nursing Federation. Pixie later applied her skills to many charitable board positions, giving generously of her time and wisdom. The energy, humor, and zest she displayed throughout her life makes for an uplifting read.

Fairfax: The Rise and Fall

release date: Aug 01, 2014
Fairfax: The Rise and Fall
Fairfax - once a great Australian media company - faces a grim future. Newspapers worldwide are faltering in the face of competition from the internet, but the fate of Fairfax stands out as being particularly cruel. The carnage is barely credible. Massive printing plants are being dismantled. Hundreds of fine journalists have been ushered from the building. The newspapers themselves are on notice. The future of the company is shaky. Fairfax: The Rise and Fall is a story that is book-ended by young Warwick Fairfax and Gina Rinehart—the eccentric beneficiaries of two of the greatest family fortunes Australia has ever seen. But the real players in the Fairfax saga are the business and political giants. They include Kerry Packer, Rupert Murdoch, Conrad Black, John Howard, Paul Keating, Neville Wran, David Gonski, Roger Corbett and Fred Hilmer. The once-mighty Fairfax has been a victim of them all. Colleen Ryan gives the definitive account of the fate of Fairfax, a drama-filled saga that reveals how far Fairfax has fallen

AAUSC 2015 Volume - Issues in Language Program Direction: Integrating the Arts: Creative Thinking about FL Curricula and Language Program Direction

release date: Jan 01, 2016
AAUSC 2015 Volume - Issues in Language Program Direction: Integrating the Arts: Creative Thinking about FL Curricula and Language Program Direction
Integrating the arts in foreign language curricula enables us to connect language to other semiotic spaces and cultural productions such as theater, the fine arts, art history, architecture, music, museum cultures, and literature. By embracing the notion of texts as socially, historically, and culturally situated practices, of which the written text is but one product, we can conjoin the basic literacy of reading and writing with a broader range of visual, aural, and spatial signifying acts. Understood in this way, the arts become a source and stimulus for not only textual analysis and communicative exchange, but also subjective response and emotional experience. In other words, by interacting with art--evaluating, interpreting, experiencing, embodying, and even producing it, in any one of its many forms--learners can understand culture as a process in which they are motivated to participate as subjects. This process can deepen the cognitive, social, aesthetic, and subjective dimensions of language learning. While many new instructors have interest or expertise in the use of one or more art forms, we cannot assume that they know how to incorporate the arts in their lesson plans. Our teacher training programs, therefore, have the potential to be transformative sites, where the concept of foreign language literacy and literacies takes shape through effectively varied pedagogical practices. This volume will not only provide a concrete vision for approaches to materials and learning goals, but also suggest directions for teacher training and long-term professional development for integrating the arts. Wake Up and Smell the Corpse

release date: Jan 01, 2008
Wake Up and Smell the Corpse
Take one coffee shop. Stir in two dysfunctional semi-alcoholic forty-something female friends, a cup of neurotic customers, a scoop of incompetent teenage employees, and a generous sprinkling of animosity. Voila! The perfect recipe for murder. Wake up and Smell the Corpse is a character-driven comedy/mystery with two dysfunctional, sexually-frustrated protagonists, Madison (Maddy) and Chloe, best friends with bad taste in men who travel through life with brains clouded by dirty martinis and Jack Daniels and Coke. Their insatiable need for chaos leads them to embark on opening a coffee house with no business sense, and no money, in an unsophisticated town not ready for $5 lattes - or them. While sailing on their entrepreneurial ship of hope, they haphazardly discover three murder victims, all in a bizarre manner, and all patrons of their shop. The first victim, Tanya-Colette (T.C.), is discovered when Maddy trips on her stilettos and falls between T.C.'s enormous fake breasts. The second victim, one of their favorite customers, is discovered when Maddy goes into an alley to relieve herself unaware that the body is in striking distance. The third victim is discovered when Maddy and Chloe break into his house to make sure he's all right. Maddy trips over his body and while nudging him to see if heaes alive, gets her stiletto heel stuck in an embarrassing spot. Since the first corpse is found buried in the basement of their coffee house, coupled with the uncanny coincidence of discovering two more bodies, they become prime suspects to the detective assigned to the investigation, who Maddy secretly - she thinks - lusts after. Through sheer drunken wit that would baffle Sherlock Holmes, the two stumble to prove their innocence and almost become victims four and five.
