Inside Game/Outside Game

release date: Feb 01, 1999
Inside Game/Outside Game
For the past three decades, the federal government has targeted the poorest areas of American cities with a succession of antipoverty initiatives, yet these urban neighborhoods continue to decline. According to David Rusk, focusing on programs aimed at improving inner-city neighborhoods--playing the ""inside game""--is a losing strategy. Achieving real improvement requires matching the ""inside game"" with a strong ""outside game"" of regional strategies to overcome growing fiscal disparities, concentrated poverty, and urban sprawl. In this persuasive book filled with personal observations as well as his trademark mastery of census statistics, Rusk argues that state legislatures must set new ""rules of the game."" He believes those rules require regional revenue or tax base sharing to reduce fiscal disparity, regional housing policies to ensure that all new developments have their fair share of low- and moderate-income housing to dissolve concentrations of poverty, and regional land-use planning and growth management to control urban sprawl. State government action, Rusk argues, is particularly crucial where regions are highly fragmented by many competing city, village, and township governments. He provides vivid success stories that demonstrate best practices for these regional strategies along with recommendations for building effective regional coalitions. A Century Foundation Book

Wholeness and the Implicate Order

release date: Jul 04, 2002
Wholeness and the Implicate Order
David Bohm was one of the foremost scientific thinkers and philosophers of our time. Although deeply influenced by Einstein, he was also, more unusually for a scientist, inspired by mysticism. Indeed, in the 1970s and 1980s he made contact with both J. Krishnamurti and the Dalai Lama whose teachings helped shape his work. In both science and philosophy, Bohm''s main concern was with understanding the nature of reality in general and of consciousness in particular. In this classic work he develops a theory of quantum physics which treats the totality of existence as an unbroken whole. Writing clearly and without technical jargon, he makes complex ideas accessible to anyone interested in the nature of reality.

New Directions in Music

New Directions in Music
Directions in the musical avant-garde in the past fifty years seem as numerous and diverse as the composers and their works. Yet these directions have historical motives and aesthetic values, traceable and uniquely observable due to their singularly radical nature. This book explores the history, philosophy, composers, and works of the avant-garde since the late 1940s, emphasizing works departing radically from tradition. Outstanding features include extensive bibliographies of written works and recordings; interviews with important avant-garde composers, showing readers firsthand the thought behind their works; in-depth analyses of specific works relevant to each chapter; and addresses, with websites, of publishers of avant-garde music.

Brain Sex
Why can''t a woman be more like a man? What is this thing called "feminine intuition"? Why are men better at reading maps, and women at other people''s characters? The answers lie in the basic biological differences between the male and female brain, which, say the authors, make it impossible for the sexes to share equal emotional or intellectual qualities.

His 8-week hunt plunges into the hinterland between the city and the mind, where a Polish art movie is no less real than the coffee in front of him and letters from an Imperial Army soldier are signposts to next week, and where he crosses paths with numerologists, staion masters, gateballers, hostesses, organ harvesters and insane chefs. The Escaped Cock

The Escaped Cock
In his last novel, published less than a year before his death, D.H. Lawrence takes up the theme of Jesus'' resurrection & his final days on earth. Lawrence recounts his agonizing journey from death back to life with alarming realism: his initial painful awakening, the utter disillusionment of living beyond his brutal death, his bewildering encounters with strangers & friends, & finally, his redemptive sexual relationship with the priestess of the pagan goddess Isis. The story expands from its Christian roots to embrace Lawrence''s abiding faith in the life force apparent in every aspect of the natural world. The combination of a pure idealism with a pure physicality enriches these characters both as human beings & as symbols of beliefs too often held in opposition. The language of this book is indulgent for Lawrence--it contains the sharp focus & lyrical intensity of poetry without losing the subtlety of detail that characterizes his prose. For his final work, it seems that Lawrence has encapsulated a lifetime of extraordinary vision into one profoundly exquisite parable.

Hume's Political Discourses

release date: Sep 16, 2022
Hume's Political Discourses
In ''Hume''s Political Discourses,'' the illustrious Scottish philosopher David Hume presents a series of essays that delve into the complexities of economic theory, political philosophy, and their intersections. With the precision and clarity that characterize Hume''s work, these discourses examine and critique concepts such as commerce, industry, and national wealth within the broader tapestry of Enlightenment thought. Hume''s adept use of empirical evidence and his dialogue with the economic theories of his contemporaries contribute to a literary style that is both intellectually rigorous and accessible to a cross-disciplinary audience. His writing here not only reflects the maturation of his own philosophical stance but also furthers the development of political economy as a nascent field of study. David Hume, an intellectual luminary of the 18th century, held deeply influential views on philosophy, economics, and historiography. His contemplation of moral, natural, and economic subjects emerged amidst the fervent philosophical innovations of the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume''s interest in the mechanisms of trade, the role of government, and the distribution of wealth suggests a natural progression from his sceptical empiricism to scrutinizing the foundational principles governing society. Such insights on human behavior and institutional structures may have their genesis in his observations of the economic transformations and political tumults of his era. This edition of ''Hume''s Political Discourses,'' ushered into new life by DigiCat Publishing, is indispensable for readers seeking to understand the inheritance of Enlightenment economic and political thought. It offers profound insights into the commerce and governance of Hume''s time that continue to resonate in contemporary discussions about market dynamics and public policy. Scholars of philosophy, economics, and history, as well as lay readers with an appetite for timeless intellectual explorations, will find this work an enlightening addition to their library, echoing with the wisdom of one of history''s greatest minds.
