Only Smiths

release date: Jul 08, 2019
Only Smiths
How a Smith aided William Wallace win at Stirling Bridge, in Norman dominated Scotland. James Smith wanted to find his own way in life. Born in Badenoch, southwest Highland Scotland, he was determined to help William Wallace fight against Norman dominance for independence. Smiths were victims of a Moray clearance when Oengus, or Angus Chief of the Chattan and last Mormaor or King of Moray, had fallen at Stracathro to be replaced by a Norman Earl. James, a 3rd generation blacksmith, crossed the Causey Mounth cattle drover road to emerge at Fetteresso, before Durris on the east coast armed with a self-made sword, targe, adaptable skills, and handed down family history shaped by war. His skills served another Earl Moray who declared for Wallace burning out Normans from Dunnottar castle still smoking as they went south for Dundee and Stirling Bridge. This decision shaped the destiny of east-coast Smiths, now told.

Practical Necessity, Freedom, and History

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Practical Necessity, Freedom, and History
By means of careful analysis of relevant writings by Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, and Marx, David James argues that the concept of practical necessity is key to understanding the nature and extent of human freedom. Practical necessity means being, or believing oneself to be, constrained to perform certain actions in the absence (whether real or imagined) of other, more attractive options, or by the high costs involved in pursuing other options. Agents become subject to practical necessity as a result of economic, social, and historical forces over which they have, or appear to have, no effective control, and the extent to which they are subject to it varies according to the amount of economic and social power that one agent possesses relative to other agents. The concept of practical necessity is also shown to take into account how the beliefs and attitudes of social agents are in large part determined by social and historical processes in which they are caught up, and that the type of motivation that we attribute to agents must recognize this. Practical Necessity, Freedom, and History: From Hobbes to Marx shows how Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, and Marx, in contrast to Hobbes, explain the emergence of the conditions of a free society in terms of a historical process that is initially governed by practical necessity. The role that this form of necessity plays in explaining history necessity invites the following question: to what extent are historical agents genuinely subject to both practical and historical necessity?

Bloodstained Tales of Sin and Sex

release date: Nov 11, 2013
Bloodstained Tales of Sin and Sex
"Bloodstained Tales of Sin and Sex" is a trio of short stories written by David Hearne that present a cast of evil yet interesting villains. Some are loathing underdogs that are unsympathetic characters that will anger you with their evil and sadistic actions. And some protagonist will have you cheering for their success in their quest to kill. Some of the stories are incredibly suspenseful and full of horror that comes not from imaginary evil entities, but from insane acts of human cruelty; much scarier than the boogie men under the bed. Scenes from Bloodstained tales of Sin and Sex will shock, disgust, yet grossly satisfy your thirst for decadent horror stories. Each story is fast paced with action and suspense. The Secret Sinners Society: Revenge is coming to a beautiful female cop in Beaumont Texas who desires to kill her mother's murderer. She and some other good folks of Beaumont are going to make it happen. Someone is going to die slowly and their screams won't help. How diabolical can her revenge be when she comes face to face with the murderer of her mother? Very! One Eighty Seven: When good luck suddenly swings in Raymond Billing's direction after years of no luck, he is elated. He has a job, good looks and lots of ladies, but what will he do if his nightmare life returns? The Strangler Fig: Does the mighty Banyan tree have the ability to recognize good from evil? That question is answered in this strange tale of redemption of a black family after they survive the oppression and brutality of post-Reconstruction America only to lose their house, land and more to the local KKK..Decades later redemption is finally on the table with the help of a Banyan tree and a Santeria Priestess..

Reclaimed Land

release date: Jan 01, 2002
Reclaimed Land
Between the end of 1994 and the beginning of 2000 - the last five years of the previous millenium - David Clarke took at least one black-and-white photo every day as he created a unique 'photo diary'. Drawing on this extensive visual archive, Reclaimed Land Hong Kong in Transition offers a personal and critical perspective on the life of one of the world's most vibrant cities during a time of great change and self-questioning. This innovatively conceived book presents an analysis in deeply considered words and imaginative images of five years of Hong Kong's history whose exact mid-point - midnight on 30 June 1997 - saw the end of British colonial rule and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Instead of focussing on the much-documented ceremonial events surrounding the handover itself, however, Reclaimed Land examines a longer term process of physical and cultural transformation of which the events of mid-1997 were but one part. This is an extraordinary and original way of telling the story of those years, and of examining the forces and phenomena behind that story. It can be enjoyed for its photography, considered as an excitingly different way of recording history, and read as a profound reflection on a city foreseeing and then experiencing an historical transformation.

Concept maps at the start of each chapter provide students with a visual snapshot of the chapter content.

Day Trading Grain Futures

release date: Aug 14, 2017
Day Trading Grain Futures
UPDATED & EXTENDED 2ND EDITION This practical book provides you with everything you need to be able to day trade grain futures effectively. It opens with chapters explaining the author's preference for the grain futures markets, and his reasons for preferring to day trade, before going on to explain the fundamentals of trading and the more specific knowledge required for his chosen approach. In a concise, punchy style the reader is introduced to some timeless trading concepts, and shown how these ideas can be moulded into a trading system to attack the exhilarating grain markets. No sophisticated indicators or complex mathematics are found here. Instead, the author builds a system based on tried and true trading principles, combined with sound money management strategies. The particular challenge for a day trader during the volatile market open is to quickly identify support and resistance zones, and form a view on trend direction, based on limited information. The author describes how he does this, with detailed illustrations and real life examples. He then goes on to explain exactly how, based on the initial market movement, he determines stop loss and target levels. A key feature of the book is the chapter tracing the progress of a real life trading session. It shows the author's methods being applied in practice, with numerous screen shots giving the reader an understanding of what the trading process feels like in practice - effectively giving you a fly on the wall view of the author in action. Another highly illustrated chapter shows a complete month of trading charts with commentary on trades taken, giving the reader an appreciation of the longer term trading process. A process described by the author as "constant repetition of a simple plan, concentrating on implementation excellence". Other chapters outline the author's views on the need for practice, and discuss the practical points a home-based trader should attend to in their computer and internet set up. The book's focus is to highlight the exciting opportunities of grain futures and provide the vital detailed and hands-on information that will make it invaluable to all futures, equity, options or CFD traders.
