The Rice Kings

release date: Oct 16, 2014
The Rice Kings
As the only son of a wealthy mill owner in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England, Jonathan Lucas is destined to become a millwright and a mill owner in northeast England like his father John Lucas. He lives a protected life behind the walls of his father''s reputation and business success. The challenges of coming of age in the 1760''s are soon approached by the young Jonathan as he enters an apprenticeship with his Uncle William Lucas. He travels to Manchester, which is far away from his mother and father''s loving care. He encounters many adventures as he learns and loves his way toward adulthood and hopefully, a successful career of his own. Jonathan must choose between two beautiful girls that enter his life in a most memorable way. One is the epitome of beauty, grace and refinement. She is the lady that most women aspired to become in eighteenth century Great Britain. The other is a fiery, auburn-headed beauty that stirs passions deep within the men who meet her. Her family''s background gives his parents pause concerning this most desirable woman. The decision is not an easy one, but one that has to be made, ... sooner or later. The American Revolution profoundly affects the fortunes of Jonathan''s family, as well as all businessmen in Britain, America and most of the trading nations of the world. It prematurely ends the apprenticeship that he was serving with his father''s brother William. It also brings a threat from an old friend of the family that is most unexpected and unwelcomed. Returning to Whitehaven, Jonathan takes a wife and starts a family of his own. Tragedy strikes and changes the course of his life. Thrust into a new role as a father and head of his own household, Jonathan continues to be confronted with difficulties, in both his business and personal life. He is offered an opportunity that would not only change his future, but change the world. Life, love, and destiny are put to the test as Jonathan comes face to face with what could be catastrophe or incredible fame and fortune. This story is the first in a series of books that will follow this important genius and his descendants as they move from Merry Old England to The Low Country of Antebellum South Carolina, to become "The Rice Kings. Follow Jonathan as the abrupt changes of his world throw everything he knows into turmoil. Check out the website: davidhenrylucasbooks.com

Community, Liberalism and the Capabilities Approach

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Community, Liberalism and the Capabilities Approach
The decline of community institutions and the increasing erosion of community infrastructure is a serious problem with consequences for human well-being. The political and economic theories of liberalism have contributed to this decline. This work examines two branches of liberalism: economic liberalism, and normative liberalism, arguing that the former has contributed to the decline of community, and that the latter has failed to recognize and protect it. I argue that the capabilities approach theory of Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen provides an improved foundation for recognizing and protecting community as a human capability that all persons should have access to. By recognizing individual autonomy as well as community participation, and by focusing on capabilities rather than primary goods or utilities, the capabilities approach builds on the achievements of liberalism while also drawing on important Aristotelian insights related to human well-being and flourishing.

Studies on Experimental Diabetes in the Rat

Studies on Experimental Diabetes in the Rat
The aim of this project was to develop suitable experimental animal models of the cardiovascular complications which frequently occur in the human diabetic. Such models are required in order that possible causes and forms of therapy may be more thoroughly investigated than is possible in human diabetics. Several metabolic parameters were measured in rats with experimental diabetes resulting from alloxan or streptozotocin administration and from pancreatectomy in order to determine the form and severity of each. It was decided to measure several cardio-vascular parameters in two of these groups namely alloxan and streptozotocin diabetic. A group of genetically obese rats were also included in this study. Both diabetic groups when pithed were found to have reduced pulse pressure and heart rate responses to catecholamines and acetylcholine. Resting pulse pressure was increased and heart rate decreased. Isolated atria from similarly diabetic rats had correspondingly lower rates and greater forces of contraction and a reduced sensitivity to catecholamines, this sensitivity being further reduced when the media glucose concentration was raised. Genetic obesity appeared to have no effect on the above parameters. The reduced pressor response to noradrenaline found in the pithed diabetic rate contrasted with previous results, this contrast suggesting that sensitivity changes in the cardio-vascular systems of the diabetic rat are uneven and that this would lead to a redistribution of blood flow away from the extremities in favour of other areas. This was confirmed by blood flow studies using a radioactively labelled microsphere technique. Since circulatory insufficiency of the extremities is a characteristic complication of human diabetes such blood flow studies in the diabetic rat may provide a suitable model of these complications. Possible metabolic and hormonal causes of the changes seen in both rats and man and areas for further investigation including a possible therapeutic approach are discussed.
