Abstract: "The basic building blocks of a database system are data items, database operations, transactions, and a concurrency protocol. A data item is a single piece of information, which can represent an integer, an image, or any abstract piece of information. A database operation can be a read operation where a data item is retrieved, a write operation where a data item is created or changed, or a delete operation where a data item is removed from the database. A transaction is a set of database operations performed together as a single operation. The concurrency protocol of a database ensures that transactions running simultaneously will not interfere with each other in a way that could jeopardize the consistency of the database. An acceptable protocol prevents information loss from lost updates and inconsistent views of the database, and also provides recoverability from failed database operations. These tasks will be defined in the section I of this paper. The ideal algorithm accomplishes these tasks with minimal network, processing, and storage overhead. In this paper, a new type of concurrency protocol will be presented. It is an optimistic, multi-versioning, dependency-based protocol. The protocol will be described, proven to fulfill the requirements described above, and compared to two of the more commonly used concurrency protocols."
