The Discourse of Sovereignty, Hobbes to Fielding

release date: Mar 02, 2017
The Discourse of Sovereignty, Hobbes to Fielding
In this new study the authors examine a range of theories about the state of nature in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, considering the contribution they made to the period''s discourse on sovereignty and their impact on literary activity. Texts examined include Leviathan, Oceana, Paradise Lost, Discourses Concerning Government, Two Treatises on Government, Don Sebastian, Oronooko, The New Atalantis, Robinson Crusoe, Dissertation upon Parties, David Simple, and Tom Jones. The state of nature is identified as an important organizing principle for narratives in the century running from the Civil War through to the second Jacobite Rebellion, and as a way of situating the author within either a reactionary or a radical political tradition. The Discourse of Sovereignty provides an exciting new perspective on the intellectual history of this fascinating period.

Engineering Modelling and Analysis

release date: Sep 03, 2018
Engineering Modelling and Analysis
Introducing engineering students to numerical analysis and computing, this book covers a range of topics suitable for the first three years of a four year undergraduate engineering degree. The teaching of computing to engineers is hampered by the lack of suitable problems for the students to tackle, so much effort has gone into making the problems in this book realistic and relevant, while at the same time solvable for undergraduates. Taking a balanced approach to teaching computing and computer methods at the same time, this book satisfies the need to be able to use computers (using both formal languages such as Fortran and other applications such as Matlab and Microsoft Excel), and the need to be able to solve realistic engineering problems.

Medieval Wales

release date: Jun 28, 1990
Medieval Wales
This book provides an introduction to the history of medieval Wales, with particular emphasis on political developments. It traces the growth of Welsh princely power, and the invasion and settlement of Welsh territories by Norman adventurers which resulted in the creation of the marcher lordships and the steady erosion of Welsh princely authority in the south. The subsequent development of a powerful Welsh state under the leadership of the princes of Gwynedd was checked by Edward I in 1277, and thereafter the principality was deliberately overrun and destroyed: the Edwardian castles are symbols of conquest. Despite valiant attempts by local leaders in the thirteenth century, and by a national leader Owain Glyn Dwr early in the fifteenth, the English domination of Wales persisted, even beyond the advent of the Tudor dynasty. This is the first comprehensive short textbook on medieval Wales to be written for school and university students. It will also attract anyone with a general interest in Celtic studies or in the centuries which played such a formative role in the development of the Welsh national character.

They prospered as landowners and teachers, but could not escape the ravages of warlords, soldiers and revolutionaries. Born into this pioneering family, Li Yao grew up in Mao''s China. He dreamt of becoming a writer, but his dreams were torn apart by the Cultural Revolution. When the storm finally subsided, the young man turned to translation. In Australian writing, he found colourful tales set in new landscapes, a literature quite unfamiliar to him. Li Yao''s story is interwoven with that of his friend, Australian historian David Walker. David''s family had also settled in an unfamiliar and difficult land, a world away in distant South Australia. The two men became friends as Li Yao translated one of David''s books into Chinese, and their personal histories provide a fascinating, illuminating window into life in China, an experience inevitably shaped by China''s relations with the wider world.

Bunyan and Authority

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Bunyan and Authority
The range of John Bunyan''s work, fictional and non-fictional, is rarely captured in literary studies; nor is he often the subject of theoretically-informed readings as in the postmodern perspective adopted in this study. Jean-François Lyotard''s conception of postmodernism as an attitude of ''incredulity towards grand narratives'' is particularly appropriate to the situation in seventeenth-century England, where the traditional narratives of church and state collapsed in the 1640s leaving a full-scale legitimation crisis in their wake. The authors explore Bunyan''s complex, and often highly subversive attitude to institutional authority, as expressed in a writing career ranging from the pamphlets of the 1650s through to the fiction of the 1670s and 80s, against a backdrop of bitter conflict between incommensurable cultural narratives. Bunyan and Authority opens up new lines of approach to an author central to the development of the nonconformist tradition in English life, and its provocative conclusions hold important implications for the study of seventeenth-century English literature, history, and religion.

Exaggerated Claims?

Exaggerated Claims?
"David Walker’s analysis is incisive and hard hitting. Anyone who believes in the power of social science to inform better policy making should take his criticisms seriously." - Sue Duncan, Former Chief Government Social Researcher and Head of the Government Social Research Service "David Walker has written an unofficial summary of ESRC′s achievements and struggles. He brings to the task long experience of the organisation and of the key players, a great familiarity with the literature and a sceptical nature. The result is stimulating, instructive, contentious and sometimes even infuriating." - David Rhind, Chair of the Nuffield Foundation What is the role of the state in distributing research money? How do ′arm′s-length′ funding agencies relate to public policy and business? This original study looks at the main social science funding agency in the UK, which was established 50 years ago. It examines how funding decisions are related to power. The ′critical′ and ‘policy′ aspects of successful research bids are discussed. Walker asks the tricky question, why has social science research not achieved a more salient role in state policy formation and management strategy: is the funding agency responsible? Insightful, engrossing and highly original, the book will be required reading for anyone who has written or will write a Social Science research bid and, more widely, for students of power, knowledge and culture.
