No One Sleeps Tonight

release date: Jun 15, 2023
No One Sleeps Tonight
New collection of poems by David Weiss, author of Per Diem. A new collection of poems by the author of Per Diem and six other books. Rarely does a poet demonstrate such mobility, plumbing the depths of the psyche while giving it new sounds, new light, new configurations of consciousness. "No One Sleeps Tonight is a collection of poems that asks the reader to ''listen to your being there.'' There is a boy kneeling at the foot of a wheelchair to help his grandmother put her feet on the steel plates; there is a man in love with ''a dozen of roses'' and the phrase ''a dozen of roses,'' bloodied and beautiful and musical; a speaker searching for a line of poetry, ''small night celebrates the great night,'' and finding it by not finding it--which is another way of finding the elusive presence, this time through solitude, that ultimate presence. In fact, all of No One Sleeps Tonight is a small life celebrating a great life through a vision that is so deliciously embodied, it makes you want to rip off the covers, get out of bed, naked, thrust open the window, and let all the evenings of your life visit you again and again and again."--Matthew Lippman Poetry. David Weiss : nine books, 1973 - 1979
Before he began working with Peter Fischli, David Weiss (1946–2012), who did his sculptor training at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel, participated from 1975–1977 in various national and international gallery and museum exhibitions where he showed his early drawings, for example in the exhibition Mentalität Zeichnung (1976), curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann in the Kunstmuseum Luzern.0Almost without exception, these large-format works on paper originated from small-format drawing books or pads that David Weiss never regarded as sketch-books but instead saw as independent works and as part of the pool and archive of his entire artistic oeuvre, traces of which can also be found in later sculptural works by Fischli/Weiss.0Edition Patrick Frey is enormously pleased to publish in cooperation with Edition Weiss a new edition of these mostly newly rediscovered and fascinating early works by the internationally acclaimed Swiss artist. This representative collection Nine Books 1973–1979, published in a limited edition, was initiated by David Weiss himself; after his death the editorial work was overseen by Iwan Schumacher.0The original sketchbooks, all of which are part of the David Weiss estate curated by the artist’s son Oskar Weiss, including the works Comix, the legendary Regenbüchlein and the water-color series Im Bad, published in 1974/1975 in the Edition Pablo Stähli, have been printed and bound in a limited edition as a facsimile of the original format.0 09 facsimile books in slipcase, published on the occasion of the exhibition David Weiss at Kunstmuseum Chur, February 2014.

Politics and Gender in the Executive Suite

release date: Jan 01, 2020
Politics and Gender in the Executive Suite
We investigate whether CEOs'' political preferences are associated with the prevalence and compensation of women among non-CEO top executives at U.S. public companies. We find that "Democratic" CEOs are associated with more women in the executive suite. To explore causality, we use an event study approach to show that replacing a Republican with a Democratic CEO increases female representation. Additionally, we discuss how the lack of an association between CEO political preferences and gender diversity in the boardroom influences our interpretation of these results. Finally, gender gaps in the level and performance-sensitivity of compensation diminish, or disappear, under Democratic CEOs.

Castability and Characteristics of High Cerium Aluminum Alloys

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Castability and Characteristics of High Cerium Aluminum Alloys
This chapter describes the development and the castability of near eutectic aluminum-cerium (Al-Ce) alloy systems. These alloys have good mechanical properties at high temperatures and are very castable. The castability of the binary systems is as good or better than the aluminum-silicon system with some deterioration as additional alloying elements are added. In alloy systems that use cerium in combination with common aluminum alloying elements such as silicon, magnesium, and/or copper, the casting characteristics are generally better than the aluminum-copper system. Alloying with magnesium increases room temperature strength considerably.

Highly Educated Women are No Longer Childless

Highly Educated Women are No Longer Childless
Baudin et al. (2015) document that childlessness rates in the U.S. in 1990 exhibit a U-shaped relationship with women''s education, with highly educated women much more likely to be childless than other women. We show that this is no longer true: the highly educated women''s childlessness rate has converged to that of other women. We argue that these women are now able to marketize the time cost of child rearing, allowing them to have both a family and career.

Mining Surplus

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Mining Surplus
James A. Schmitz documents, in a well-known case study (Journal of Political Economy 113 (2005), 582-625), a dramatic rise in productivity in the American and Canadian iron-ore industry following an increase in competition from Brazil. Prior to the increased competition, the industry was not competitive. Economic profits were divided between business and unions. Schmitz attributes the increase in productivity to a change in work practices in the industry, as old negotiated union work rules were abandoned or modified. This research formalizes a mechanism through which a rise in competition can lead to increased productivity in the iron-ore industry.
