The White River Badlands

release date: May 25, 2015
The White River Badlands
This guide to the South Dakota region that houses the world''s richest fossil beds does "an excellent job of presenting the current state of knowledge" ( Choice). The forbidding Big Badlands in Western South Dakota contain the richest fossil beds in the world. Even today these rocks continue to yield new specimens brought to light by snowmelt and rain washing away soft rock deposited on a floodplain long ago. The quality and quantity of the fossils are superb: most of the species to be found there are known from hundreds of specimens. The fossils in the White River Group (and similar deposits in the American west) preserve the entire late Eocene through the middle Oligocene, roughly 35-30 million years ago and more than thirty million years after non-avian dinosaurs became extinct. The fossils provide a detailed record of a period of abrupt global cooling and what happened to creatures who lived through it. This book is a comprehensive reference to the sediments and fossils of the Big Badlands, and also touches on National Park Service management policies that help protect such significant fossils. Includes photos and illustrations "A worthy successor to the work of O''Harra." — Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology

Passionate Holiness

release date: Sep 20, 2018
Passionate Holiness
Archbishop Desmond Tutu of Cape Town once said with regard to South Africa’s apartheid policy, “One of the ways of helping to destroy a people is to tell them that they don’t have a history, that they have no roots.” More recently, he described homophobic discrimination as “totally unacceptable and unjust as apartheid ever was.” Unfortunately, it has been particularly difficult for some gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Christians to remain connected to identify with their own faith traditions because some of these traditions not only treat them as people of secondary status but also teach Christian history as though no people of same-gender attraction or opposite-gender identity had any noteworthy place in it and made no significant contributions at all to Christian tradition. Passionate Holiness tries to remedy this situation by explaining why acquaintance with the stories of certain saints with whom gender minorities can identify can help them to connect with their own history and spiritual legacy and empower them to face a brighter future with a sense of optimism and inclusion.

Your Mama Was Wrong

release date: Jan 01, 2003
Your Mama Was Wrong
The basic premise of this book is that most, if not all, of what we have been taught to believe is true, is not true or only half true. We blindly assume that what our mothers taught us about lying, paternity, religion, incest, nudity, pornography, and other subjects was right. This book states that a closer look at what was taught will reveal that "Your Mama Was Wrong". It says that lying is not always wrong. Sometimes it can be dangerous to tell the truth. When the slaves were being hhid by the "underground railroad", people lied in order to protect them. This book points out the fact that there are males, females and people who are neither male nor female. It also says that all religions are basically hearsay because they are founded upon what someone "said" was "said". All the sacred books were written by someone - usually male, who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. The chapter on paternity shows how DNA testing can prove that "Your Mama Was Wrong" about who she said your father was. This chapter will prove to be very disturbing to many. There never has been a book written that challenges so many of society''s views of right and wrong, true and false, fact and fiction.

Teaching Information Fluency

release date: Nov 14, 2013
Teaching Information Fluency
Teaching Information Fluency describes the skills and dispositions of information fluency adept searchers. Readers will receive in-depth information on what it takes to locate, evaluate, and ethically use digital information. The book realistically examines the abilities of Internet searchers today in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness in finding online information, evaluating it and using it ethically. Since the majority of people develop these skills on their own, rather than being taught, the strategies they invent may suffice for simple searches, but for more complex tasks, such as those required by academic and professional work, the average person’s performance is adequate only about 50% of the time. The book is laid out in five parts: an introduction to the problem and how search engine improvements are not sufficient to be of real help, speculative searching, investigative searching, ethical use and applications of information fluency. The intent of the book is to provide readers ways to improve their performance as consumers of digital information and to help teachers devise useful ways to integrate information fluency instruction into their teaching, since deliberate instruction is needed to develop fluency. Since it is unlikely that dedicated class time will be available for such instruction, the approach taken embeds information fluency activities into classroom instruction in language arts, history and science. Numerous model lessons and resources are woven into the fabric of the text, including think-alouds, individual and group search challenges, discussions, assessments and curation, all targeted to Common Core State Standards as well as information fluency competencies.

All the Essential Half-Truths about Higher Education

release date: Dec 01, 2007
All the Essential Half-Truths about Higher Education
In this refreshing and original exploration, George Dennis O''Brien looks at higher education in America. O''Brien argues that to debate intelligently the future of education we must stop focusing on its ideals and look instead at its institutions. He does this by addressing nine half-truths, such as whether "low cost public education benefits the least advantaged in society," and goes on to examine how accurately they reflect the true state of higher education. The result is a thought-provoking discussion of the present challenges and future prospects of American higher education. "O''Brien''s historical overview of the transition from 19th-century denominational colleges to 20th-century research-driven and largely secular ones is provocative. Cleverly written and well-focused, the book addresses the financial pressures facing higher education and asks vital questions about cutbacks and curricula."—Publishers Weekly "Lively, engaging, and richly suggestive." —Francis Oakley, Commonweal "O''Brien employs calm, powerful reason, without sensationalism. His perspective is illuminating. . . . All the Essential Half-Truths About Higher Education is one of the wisest and most useful treatments of American higher education." —John Attarian, Detroit News
