The Old Testament Witness to Christ and His Kingdom, Student Workbook

release date: Aug 01, 2016
The Old Testament Witness to Christ and His Kingdom, Student Workbook
The Spirit-breathed Scriptures are anchored on the witness of Jesus of Nazareth. He and he alone provides unity, continuity, and coherence to both the Old and New Testaments, and no one can claim a holistic or accurate view of the Bible without him being central in all phases of exegesis. He is the Bible''s theme (John 5.39-40). In this module we trace some of the significant markers of the OT''s witness to Messiah, and see how those markers provide us with a strong handle on the meaning of the entirety of Scripture. In the lessons included in this volume we examine the relationship of the Old Testament to the New Testament through the idea of progressive revelation, as well as consider how the events, institutions, and persons of the OT represent an analogy where we can understand the larger relationship of God with all of the redeemed through Jesus Christ. Specifically, we will study key character types in the OT with Jesus'' roles as a prophet (Moses), priest (Melchizedek), and king (David). Finally, we consider the nature and scope of OT messianic prophecy as it relates to providing us with a clear witness to Jesus of Nazareth and the fulfillment of the promised Christ and his coming Kingdom. Get Your Pretense On

release date: Mar 28, 2018
Get Your Pretense On
Some years ago, the apologist C. S. Lewis challenged disciples of Jesus in his classic little Christian primer, Mere Christianity, to live true to their new identities as children of God. The chapter was entitled "Let''s Pretend." Building on that important motif, Don Davis issues a similar call to Christ followers today to "Get Your Pretense On!" He calls every believer in Christ to both understand and embrace their true identities as both citizens and ambassadors of the Kingdom of God. This book outlines a biblical and doctrinal perspective designed to help you know what it means to act worthy of your true, redeemed status and position, and to make a difference in the roles where Jesus has placed you.Take your place as a Kingdom citizen and ambassador, and represent the King with honor in your unique circle of relationships!

The Equipping Ministry, Student Workbook

release date: May 03, 2017
The Equipping Ministry, Student Workbook
The ministry of the Word of God lies at the heart of the equipping ministry. Paul tells the Ephesians that God has given the Church apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors and teachers in order that they might equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for building up the body of Christ (Eph. 4.11-12). There is no precedent for seeing a church as having a single minister: truly, all believers in Christ are ministers of the grace of God, and pastors are assigned to equip them. As believers we hold to the universal priesthood of believers (1 Pet. 2.8-9), in the universal ministry of the gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12.1-11), and the universal functioning of the members of the body of Christ (Rom. 12.3-8). This module focuses on the role of Christian leaders to equip the saints through the ministry of preaching and teaching. We first consider the ministry of proclamation (kerygma) and then highlight dimensions of the ministry of teaching (didache). In each section, we carefully define the critical distinctiveness of the ministries respectively, noting their differences and similarities in nurturing the body of Christ. We explore both as seen in Jesus'' and the apostles'' work, and examine the elements involved in the call to preach and to teach. We pay careful attention to the role that character plays in both, and highlight the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the equipping ministries together. We close our study by providing the tried method for effective preaching and teaching, i.e., how to plan, deliver, and follow up the Word preached and taught. As communicators of the Word of God, we must first establish contact with hearers, communicate the content of the Word clearly and boldly, and make connections with the truth of the message and the lives of the audience, proclaiming all in dependence on the Holy Spirit. Without question, the most dynamic spiritual force in the Church is the Spirit-inspired and illumined Word of God, the Holy Scriptures. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we affirm our deep belief in the creative, convicting, converting, and calling power of the Word of God. To understand the wonderful blessing of conversion and calling, we will need to critically evaluate the place of the Word of God in the Church. This module highlights the dynamic power of the Word of God to both convert the lost and secure the called into the full will of God. We begin with a discussion of how the Bible understands itself to be in fact the very Word of God, inspired by the "breath of God," the Holy Spirit. Through his ministry through the Holy Scriptures, we understand that the Word of God plays a pivotal role in the regeneration of the lost person; through the Word, the Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Word of God converts us; it is a Word that brings new life, and that is synonymous with the Gospel of Jesus. It is the Word which causes us to be "born again," to experience the washing of regeneration, and renewal of the Holy Spirit, producing in those who believe very concrete signs of God''s renewing power. Finally, we see how this Word calls us out of darkness into new life in Christ. We explore the concept of metanoia, that is, repentance toward God, and to faith (pistis). The Word of God produces faith in Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior who saves, delivers, and rescues the believer from the penalty, power, and presence of sin.
