The Just Vengeance

release date: Jul 20, 2011
The Just Vengeance
In this play, Dorothy L. Sayers addressed the crimes and problems of human life, especially those of the victors in war, in an entirely novel way, by precipitating an airman in the very moment of his death back into the company of citizens of the "City," in this case, Lichfield. The citizens range from Adam and Eve (Adam himself the inventor of the axe which kills Abel) together with other biblical characters in the history of redemption brought to new life as members of the City (e.g., Judas is a common informer). Others bear burdens of shame, toil, fear, poverty, and ingratitude. Former inhabitants (e.g., George Fox, Dr. Johnson) help the airman see that no more than they can he shift the burden of guilt and grief that they all share. There is but one remedy, to join the "Persona Dei" carrying his cross, finding indeed that he bears their burdens for them. The "Persona Dei" is finally seen in resurrection and glory.

Strong Poison

release date: Aug 30, 2021
Strong Poison
In "Strong Poison," Dorothy L. Sayers masterfully weaves a tale of mystery and moral ambiguity, set against the backdrop of 1930s London. The narrative follows the brilliant amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey as he investigates a murder case that centers around the enigmatic Harriet Vane, accused of poisoning her former lover. Sayers employs a sophisticated literary style that blends sharp dialogue, intricate plotting, and psychological depth, effectively exploring themes of guilt, societal mores, and the evolving role of women during the interwar period. This novel not only entertains but also critiques the era''Äôs rigid perspectives on gender and justice. Dorothy L. Sayers was a pioneering figure in the world of detective fiction, notable for her intellectual approach to the genre. As a contemporary of Agatha Christie, Sayers was academic, having studied at Oxford and confronted issues of gender and professionalism firsthand. Her personal experiences as a woman in a male-dominated field informed her creation of Harriet Vane, a complex character who embodies the struggles of her time, reflecting Sayers'' meticulous consideration of both character and social context. "Strong Poison" is highly recommended for readers who appreciate a blend of intricate plotlines and philosophical inquiry in their mysteries. As the novel challenges conventional narratives and offers a compelling look at character development, it stands as a critical exploration of identity, making it an essential addition to the canon of detective literature.

The Zeal of thy House

release date: Jul 18, 2011
The Zeal of thy House
Dorothy L. Sayers took her inspiration from a monk''s account of the fire of 1174, and the subsequent rebuilding of Canterbury Cathedral Quire. She portrays William of Sens, the chosen architect, as eaten away by pride in his splendid work, unable to give glory to God for his achievement. Enacted in the presence of a group of graciously influential archangels, the play reveals the carelessness of some of the monks, resulting in the terrifying fall that cripples William. His agony brings him to repentance and gratitude before God, and finally to the renunciation of his role, leaving the completion of the rebuilding to others. This edition also comes with an English translation of the Latin texts in the play.

The present one is more heterogeneous and pays more attention to the literary and poetic aspects of Dante''s work. Here and there an attempt is made to rescue Dante from the exalted isolation in which he stands, and to compare with him other poets writing on similar themes. ''To label any poet hors concours is in a manner to excommunicate him.'' This is not a work of popularization, but Dr. Sayers has in a high degree the ability to make things plain and readable for the general reader while at the same time revealing much that scholars may have overlooked.

The Floating Admiral

release date: Jul 09, 2019
The Floating Admiral
It''s "great fun" when a baker''s dozen of Golden Age authors collaborate on a whodunit—including Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and G. K. Chesterton ( The Guardian). Originally published in 1931, The Floating Admiral is a classic literary collaboration by members of the Detection Club, in which each chapter is written by a different mystery author, with G. K. Chesterton adding a prologue after the novel was completed. Each writer was tasked with building on what the previous writer created, without ignoring or avoiding whatever plot points had come before. Although Anthony Berkeley wrote the definitive conclusion to the mystery in his final chapter, the writers all provided their own individual solutions, each in a sealed envelope, which appear in the appendix. In the words of Dorothy L. Sayers in her introduction, the spirit of the project was that of a "detection game," for the amusement of the authors—and their readers. In the sleepy English seaside village of Whynmouth, an old sailor discovers a corpse floating serenely in a rowboat owned by the local vicar. The victim has been stabbed in the chest. It falls to Inspector Rudge to solve this most baffling mystery, in which not only the identity of the killer but the identity of the victim is called into question. The Floating Admiral includes contributions by Canon Victor L. Whitechurch, G. D. H. and Margaret Cole, Henry Wade, Agatha Christie, John Rhode, Milward Kennedy, Dorothy L. Sayers, Ronald A. Knox, Freeman Wills Crofts, Edgar Jepson, Clemence Dane, and Anthony Berkeley. "I was . . . hugely entertained by the virtuoso displays of mental gymnastics, which kept me guessing all the way." — The Guardian
