The Sand Man and Other Stories

release date: Sep 22, 2025
The Sand Man and Other Stories
The Sand-man and Other Stories brings together some of E.T.A. Hoffmann''s most influential tales, where the fantastic and the uncanny intersect with psychological depth. The central story, The Sandman, follows Nathanael, a young man haunted since childhood by a terrifying figure associated with the legend of the Sandman. As an adult, he becomes obsessed with the mysterious Coppola, a lens-seller whom he believes to be the same menacing figure. His fascination with the automaton Olympia, whom he mistakes for a living woman, ultimately drives him into madness. The story is a powerful exploration of fear, obsession, and the fragile boundary between illusion and reality. Other stories in the collection expand Hoffmann''s fascination with the uncanny. In Councillor Krespel, a violin-maker''s eccentric behavior masks a tragic secret tied to music and love. The Mines of Falun recounts the story of a miner lured by supernatural forces beneath the earth, torn between worldly love and mystical destiny. Each tale blends detailed realism with fantastic elements, creating a constant tension between the rational and the irrational. The collection is unified by themes of obsession, distorted perception, and the power of imagination. Hoffmann''s characters often lose themselves in dreams, desires, or delusions, suggesting that the human mind is as mysterious and unpredictable as the supernatural itself. His narrative style—both ironic and lyrical—invites readers into a world where reality is never stable and where everyday objects or events conceal hidden dangers and meanings. E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776–1822) was a German writer, composer, and jurist, recognized as one of the founders of modern fantastic literature. His works influenced later authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, and Franz Kafka. In The Sandman and Other Stories, Hoffmann demonstrates his mastery in blending psychological insight with Gothic and Romantic elements, leaving a legacy of tales that continue to intrigue readers with their complexity and unsettling power.

The Life and Opinions of Tomcat Murr

The Life and Opinions of Tomcat Murr
In E.T.A. Hoffmann''s extraordinary novel, Opinions of the Cat Murr , the reader embarks on a fantastic journey through the routine activities of daily life in 19th century Germany. The confident and eclectic talents of Murr, a creature inspired by Hoffmann''s own beloved cat, make him a true feline of the Renaissance, while Kriesler, Hoffmann''s alter ego, is a character saturated with romantic sensibility. E.T.A. Hoffmann''s strange tale evokes the supernatural, the operatic, the musical, and the psychiatric in a narrative populated by characters who cross the boundaries between madness and sanity, with a style that reflects this uncertainty. The work influenced a diverse group including Gogol, Dostoevsky, Kafka, Kierkegaard, and Jung, and in many ways foreshadowed Freud''s ideas about the mysterious. Opinions of the Cat Murr is a classic and is part of the famous collection: 1001 BOOKS to Read Before You Die.

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King
E.T.A. Hoffmann''s "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" is a masterful intertwining of fantasy and realism, exploring themes of duality and the transformative power of imagination. In this richly imaginative tale, Hoffmann crafts a narrative that unfolds during a Christmas celebration, where young Marie''s enchanting adventure begins with a battle between the Nutcracker and the sinister Mouse King. E.T.A. Hoffmann, a prolific figure in German literature, was deeply influenced by the artistic currents of his time, including Romanticism and the rise of the theatre. His background as a musician, composer, and jurist informs the rhythmic quality and emotional depth of his storytelling. Hoffmann''s exploration of the inner workings of the human psyche and his fascination with the uncanny underpin much of his literary oeuvre, including this classic tale, which mirrors his own struggles between reality and the fantastical.

The Automaton (Fantasy and Horror Classics)

The Automaton (Fantasy and Horror Classics)
This early work by E. T. A. Hoffmann was originally published in 1814. Born in Königsberg, East Prussia in 1776, Hoffmann''s family were all jurists, and during his youth he was initially encouraged to pursue a career in law. However, in his late teens Hoffman became increasingly interested in literature and philosophy, and spent much of his time reading German classicists and attending lectures by, amongst others, Immanuel Kant. Hoffman went on to produce a great range of both literary and musical works. Probably Hoffman''s most well-known story, produced in 1816, is ''The Nutcracker and the Mouse King'', due to the fact that - some seventy-six years later - it inspired Tchaikovsky''s ballet The Nutcracker. In the same vein, his story ''The Sandman'' provided both the inspiration for Léo Delibes''s ballet Coppélia, and the basis for a highly influential essay by Sigmund Freud, called ''The Uncanny''. (Indeed, Freud referred to Hoffman as the "unrivalled master of the uncanny in literature.") Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900''s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Tales of Hoffmann

release date: May 27, 2004
Tales of Hoffmann
This selection of Hoffmann''s finest short stories vividly demonstrates his intense imagination and preoccupation with the supernatural, placing him at the forefront of both surrealism and the modern horror genre. Suspense dominates tales such as Mademoiselle de Scudery, in which an apprentice goldsmith and a female novelist find themselves caught up in a series of jewel thefts and murders. In the sinister Sandman, a young man''s sanity is tormented by fears about a mysterious chemist, while in The Choosing of a Bride a greedy father preys on the weaknesses of his daughter''s suitors. Master of the bizarre, Hoffman creates a sinister and unsettling world combining love and madness, black humour and bewildering illusion.
