Roast Beef Medium
"I think I ought to tell you," she began, "that I never was a minister''s daughter, and I don''t remember ever havin'' been deserted by my sweetheart when I was young and trusting. If I was to draw a picture of my life it would look like one of those charts that the weather bureau gets out-one of those high and low barometer things, all uphill and downhill like a chain of mountains in a kid''s geography." -from "Pink Tights and Ginghams" The critics of her day called her the greatest American woman novelist, and one, in 1918, called her character Emma McChesney "one of the cheeriest, truest, and most helpful characters given to American readers in recent years." Edna Ferber rose to fame, in fact, on her short stories about the adventures of Emma, a sophisticated traveling underwear saleswoman about whom the phrase "one smart cookie" might have been coined. This 1913 collection of some of those tales is an excellent introduction to Emma, and to Ferber, whose vivid prose and sharply realized characters continue to make her work among the most enjoyable in American literature. Ferber''s piercing perspective offers a keen insight on the foibles of American society, and finds the undercurrents of hypocrisy and frivolity with intelligence and humor. American novelist EDNA FERBER (1885-1968) was a member of the Algonquin Round Table, the unofficial society of New York City literary wits. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1924 for her novel So Big; among her other works are Showboat (1926), Cimarron (1929), Giant (1952), and Ice Palace (1958).

American Beauty
Originally published in 1931, this bestselling American family saga from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edna Ferber shares the story of the Oakes family, as their relationships and property encounter numerous struggles over the course of hundreds of years. In the early 18th century, the Oakes family was one of many working to settle their land in the Connecticut Valley, facing harsh winters and land disputes. Their attempts over the years to tame the land and produce a properous tobacco farm prove more difficult than expected, and when the family takes on Polish immigrants to work the farm, cultures clash, and relationships become complicated. American Beauty follows the goings-on at the Oakes estate from 1700 through 1930, and whether in times of family turmoil or hopeful prosperity, Edna Ferber''s cast of fascinating characters and pitch-perfect take on American life rings true.

Personality Plus

release date: Jan 01, 2002
Personality Plus
Edna Ferber, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Show Boat and Giant, achieved her first great success with a series of stories featuring Emma McChesney: a smart, stylish, divorced mother who in a mere twelve years rose from stenographer to traveling sales representative to business manager and partner of the T. A. Buck Featherloom Petticoat Company. In this second of three volumes chronicling the travels and trials of Emma McChesney, the plucky heroine trades in her traveling bag and coach tickets for an office and a position a T. A. Buck Jr.''s business partner. Along with this well-earned promotion comes the home--with a fireplace--that she had longed for during her ten years on the road. Her dashing son Jock, now twenty-one, has just entered the business world himself with the Berg, Shriner Advertising company. His colleagues believe that with his heritage he "ought to be able to sell ice to an eskimo." Indeed, Jock dazzles them with his keen business sense and exemplary work ethic, but goes overboard on the charm and ends up alienating clients, unnerving his boss, and even patronizing his business-savvy mother. When his company takes on the challenge of creating a zippy advertising campaign for T. A. Buck''s no-frills petticoats, Jock comes through, but not without a reminder that mother always knows best. In this bracingly modern novel, first published in 1914, Ferber contrasts the virtues of talent with those of experience to provide a fresh, readable, and smartly entertaining contest between a mother and her adult son.

Emma Mcchesney and Co.
The door marked "MRS. MCCHESNEY" was closed. T. A. Buck, president of the Buck Featherloom Petticoat Company, coming gaily down the hall, stopped before it, dismayed, as one who, with a spicy bit of news at his tongue''s end, is met with rebuff before the first syllable is voiced. That closed door meant: "Busy. Keep out." "She''ll be reading a letter," T. A. Buck told himself grimly. Then he turned the knob and entered his partner''s office. Mrs. Emma McChesney was reading a letter. More than that, she was poring over it so that, at the interruption, she glanced up in a maddeningly half-cocked manner which conveyed the impression that, while her physical eye beheld the intruder, her mental eye was still on the letter. "I knew it," said T. A. Buck morosely. Emma McChesney put down the letter and smiled. "Sit down—now that you''re in. And if you expect me to say, ''Knew what?'' you''re doomed to disappointment." T. A. Buck remained standing, both gloved hands clasping his walking stick on which he leaned.

Emma McChesney and Company
Edna Ferber, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Show Boat and Giant, achieved her first great success with a series of stories featuring Emma McChesney: a smart, stylish, divorced mother who in a mere twelve years rose from stenographer to traveling sales representative to business manager and partner of the T. A. Buck Featherloom Petticoat Company. In this final of three volumes chronicling the travels and trials of Emma McChesney, first published in 1915, Emma''s son, Jock, has moved to Chicago with his new wife. Struggling with a newly emptied nest, Emma dives into a whirlwind South American sales tour to prove she hasn''t lost her touch. Back in New York, Emma and her business partner, T. A. Buck Jr., try to disguise their budding romance from colleagues. After months of acting like a "captain of finance when he feels like a Romeo," T. A. convinces Emma they should marry. Emma tries to "be what the yellow novels call a doll-wife" but trades in her fancy dressing gowns for more sensible business suits and heads back to the office. With one hand writing advertising copy and the other wrapped around a pair of shears, Emma saves the company from financial peril amid the arrival of some flustering, if exciting, news from Jock. By turns sales pro, newlywed, fashion maven, and anxious grandmother, Emma symbolizes the ideal woman at the dawn of the twentieth century: sharp, capable, charming, and progressive. Emma McChesney and Co. is enhanced by the illustrations of James Montgomery Flagg, one of the most highly regarded book illustrators of the period.

Gigolo Annotated by Edna Ferber

release date: Jul 02, 2020
Gigolo Annotated by Edna Ferber
Early twentieth-century novel by Edna Ferber, the American, novelist, author and playwright whose novels generally featured a strong female as the protagonist, although she fleshed out multiple characters in each book. She usually highlighted at least one strong secondary character who faced discrimination ethnically or for other reasons; through this technique, Ferber demonstrated her belief that people are people and that the non-so-pretty persons have the best character.

Buttered Side Down: Stories

release date: May 27, 2017
Buttered Side Down: Stories
Edna Ferber was a 20th century American author whose novels, short stories, and plays were extremely popular during her era. She wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning So Big, Show Boat, Cimarron, and Giant. In the words of the 1912 Book Review Digest, this consists of "A dozen stories of breadwinners, women chiefly, whose bread invariably falls with the buttered side down." There''s humor here, and now-fascinating descriptions of the details of everyday life of the time. But all is not sweetness and light. Some of the stories seem to end abruptly, leaving me wondering what the point was. Others end in infuriating ways; there aren''t a lot of happy endings here. In fact, the last story is absolutely dark. The theme seems to be, as one of Ferber''s characters says, "Most of us are where we are because we belong there, and if we didn''t, we wouldn''t be." A much different outlook on life than we have now, where there''s such an emphasis on improving oneself, and upward mobility.Despite my seeming complaints about these stories, I will be reading more Edna Ferber because, although infuriating, the characters, descriptions and stories are just plain interesting. Now to the nitty-gritty. I read the free Kindle version, ASIN B002RKSYNG, that shows a publication date of March 17, 2006. There is an active Table of Contents and the formatting for the most parts seems fine to me. There are a typo or two, but no worse than the current books I''ve bought so far. I don''t see any reason to pay for this one unless the The Works: Edna Ferber gets good reviews; then it might be worth spending the money for convenience sake. (No reviews for that collection yet, as of this writing.)
