In Old Kentucky
In Old Kentucky A Story of the Bluegrass and the Mountains Founded on Charles T. Dazey'' s Play was written by Edward Marshall and Charles Dazey in 1910. The story begins, She was coming, singing, down the side of Nebo Mountain--"Old Nebo"--mounted on an ox. Sun-kissed and rich her coloring; her flowing hair was like spun light; her arms, bare to the elbows and above, might have been the models to drive a sculptor to despair, as their muscles played like pulsing liquid beneath the tinted, velvet skin of wrists and forearms; her short skirt bared her shapely legs above the ankles half-way to the knees; her feet, never pinched by shoes and now quite bare, slender, graceful, patrician in their modelling, in strong contrast to the linsey-woolsey of her gown and rough surroundings, were as dainty as a dancing girl''s in ancient Athens.

Seasons of Growth

release date: Jan 06, 2017
Seasons of Growth
The Four Seasons is a timeless piece of music composed by Antonio Vivaldi. It evokes life-like images and allegorical illustrations. The melody, the tempo, the timbre, the dynamics and the harmony paint a vivid picture inviting the audience to join in the full drama of being: to experience the rapturous joys of birth and creation, the quiet moments of reflection and contemplation, the silence of discernment and observation, the angst of longing, the hope of planning, the excitement of action and reflection, the mystery of death and re-birth, and many more such significant instances. What is the meaning of Vivaldi''s Four Seasons for our contemporary way of living? Viktor E. Frankl, MD, PhD (1905-1997) is the founder of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis, a humanistic-existentialist approach to health care, counselling and psychotherapy. Logotherapy is unique among other approaches as it offers a holistic view of the human person as a three-dimensional being with a body, mind, and spirit. Its main premise is that human beings are primarily motivated by the will to meaning. Existential Analysis offers an explication of human experience in relation to meaning. The authors employed a qualitative method to disseminate the many layers of meaning apparent in Vivaldi''s engaging work. The Sonnets upon which Vivaldi wrote his music were examined in the light of the author''s understanding of Frankl''s Logotherapy and Existential Analysis. The findings of this inductive and deductive process are summarized in successive chapters. They present the emerging key concepts of Frankl''s theory. They describe the "seasons of growth" as an evolving appreciation of the significance of finding meaning in life in all circumstances, even the most miserable. They illustrate the dynamics in the music which appear to dovetail the dynamics of meaning-seeking, finding meaning, and the actualization of meaning in the four seasons. Conscious and unconscious resources of the human spirit for finding meaning, and fostering the dynamics of meaning seeking through self-discovery, and increased capacity for self-awareness, self-distancing and self-transcendence are discussed. The paramount importance of finding meaning for optimal well-being is highlighted. The benefit of employing art therapy in addition to traditional talk therapy is that is aids the visual representation of conscious and unconscious phenomena. Meaning-oriented art therapy allows to tap into the conscious and unconscious resources of the human spirit, which offers an indispensable dimension for healing. Forty exercises were selected from review of literature and the authors'' clinical experience. They were grouped based on face value into four categories for facilitating self-discovery, self-distancing and self-transcendence through the "four seasons," corresponding to the main theme of each season. Meaning-oriented artistic expressions are a natural way of utilizing the resources we possess for increasing well-being. They are instrumental in visualizing the dynamics and processes involved in our search for meaning.

Healing Ministry

release date: Mar 02, 2013
Healing Ministry
Healing Ministry is based on our experiences of using Viktor E. Frankl''s Logotherapy during the past twenty years. It is based upon selected articles we wrote while working as Psychiatrist (Edward Marshall), Psychologist (Maria Marshall), Clinical Counselor and Psychotherapist (Maria and Edward Marshall). The first article "Healing through Meaning" was written by Maria Marshall in 1994. It was submitted in preparation for the Tenth World Congress on Logotherapy, which was held in July, 1995. The paper was presented in an abbreviated format. This was the first International Conference on Logotherapy that Maria attended. The Tenth World Congress allowed her to meet and to study with other distinguished logotherapists, such as Dr. Elisabeth Lukas. The second article, "Seeds of Reconciliation in Logotherapy," was written in 2000. It was submitted for presentation at an International Conference on Logotherapy, which was scheduled for the year 2001, in Rome, Italy. Unfortunately, in the wake of the terrorist attacks in September 11, 2001, the conference was cancelled. The paper has been recently re-constructed with help from Edward Marshall, and appears in this text. A shorter version of it has been submitted as an article for publication in the International Forum for Logotherapy (IFL). The third article "Logotherapeutic Principles in Marriage Therapy" was written in the same year, 2000, and was presented at the International Conference of Transcultural Psychiatry in Andorra, in 2001. The photo on our cover page was taken in Andorra. It is entitled "The Dancing Couple" and is the most photographed statue and symbol of the Principality of Andorra. --Shortly after the conference in Andorra, Maria Marshall and Edward Marshall met. Edward Marshall, at the time was working in the United Kingdom as Psychiatrist. "Families and the Search for Meaning" is a recent writing (2012), and it is based on our past ten years of marriage and family life together. Raising our children is helping us to appreciate the challenges of balancing work life and home life, and creating a safe and nurturing environment for our children, where they feel protected, and valued. Our aim is to aid other families who encounter similar challenges. The fifth article "The Role of Logotherapy-Education in the Treatment of Personality Disorders" is based on Edward Marshall''s work as Psychiatrist, and Psychotherapist. During his many years of experience of treating people with Personality Disorders, Marshall came to appreciate and to integrate the principles of Viktor Frankl''s Logotherapy into his everyday practice. It was recently submitted for presentation at the upcoming Fourteenth World Congress on Logotherapy, in Dallas, Texas, in June, 2013. The sixth article "Logotherapy and the Physical Health of People Suffering with Mentally Ill Patients" was written by Dr. Edward Marshall in 2005, on the occasion of Viktor E. Frankl''s one hundredth birthday anniversary. It is based on his experiences of working as Family Physician (in Spain), and Psychiatrist in the United Kingdom. The seventh, and last article, "From Emotional Suffering to Triumph: Building Courage Through ''The Rainbow Exercise, ''" is a recent article by Maria Marshall (2013), submitted for publication in the IFL. Its purpose is to inspire courage and hope for clients and therapists, and draws on her self-experience of parent, and therapist.
