La Bear infatti approfitta del mystery iniziale per fornire al lettore una splendida estrapolazione sociale e tecnologica dell’India futura (in particolare della città di Bangalore), un paese affascinante in cui le novità offerte dalla tecnologia (cambiamenti genetici, impianti neurali, network cibernetici, mondi virtuali) convivono con le tradizioni culturali più antiche e radicate, e un ritratto psicologico assai accurato e riuscito. Ferron, la detective che si trova tra le mani questo caso spinoso e delicato, il cui unico testimone oculare è un gatto pappagallo dotato di parola, è una delle figure più riuscite della fantascienza moderna. Accompagnata dal fido aiutante Indrapramit, Ferron dovrà fare i conti con le gelosie dell’ambiente universitario, e con le intrusioni di una madre ossessiva che vive in un mondo di memorie immagazzinate in un database virtuale, per venire a capo del rebus, apparentemente insolubile, della morte del fisico Dexter Coffin. Un romanzo breve affascinante e avvincente, con un mondo futuro assai ben dipinto e dei personaggi ben tratteggiati, classificatosi al quarto posto tra i migliori romanzi brevi del 2012 secondo l’autorevole rivista Locus. Elizabeth Bear (nome completo Sarah Bear Elizabeth Wishnevsky), nata il 22 settembre 1971 a Hartford, nel Connecticut, è una delle scrittrici di sf e fantasy oggi più apprezzate. Vincitrice nel 2005 del John W. Campbell Award come miglior autore esordiente per la sua trilogia fantascientifica Hammered/Scardown/Worldwired, ha ricevuto numerosi altri prestigiosi riconoscimenti, come il Premio Hugo nel 2008 per il miglior racconto con Tideline (apparso su Robot n. 56 col titolo Sulla spiaggia), premio bissato l’anno successivo (2009) per il miglior racconto lungo con Shoggoths in Bloom (Shoggoth in fiore, uscito in questa collana). Solo pochi autori nella storia della sf erano riusciti nell’impresa di vincere svariati premi Hugo dopo aver vinto il John W. Campbell Award (C.J. La Bear, che possiede uno stile letterario molto curato, come dimostrano Shoggoth in fiore e questo Nella casa di Aryaman (In the House of Aryaman a Lonely Signal Burns), è assai prolifica e non ha preferenza tra sf e fantasy, generi tra cui spazia con estrema disinvoltura e bravura.
