Summary of Weather and Climate Monitoring in Southeast Coast Network Parks, 2010
The purpose of this report is to compile and analyze 2010 weather data relevant to SECN parks in order to: * Determine status, trends, and variability of precipitation, temperature and relative humidity over time * Determine the status, trends, and variability of derived weather data (such as frost days and number of days temperature more than 90 F) for SECN park units. In addition, data in this report may be used to help put other monitoring data into context. For example, droughts influence water quality and late hard freezes could affect amphibian community data, etc. Finally, this report summarizes 2010 weather data within a regional context and also puts that data into perspective against the long-term climatic record.

Relating Retinal Structure to Sensory Eye Dominance and Contrast Threshold

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Relating Retinal Structure to Sensory Eye Dominance and Contrast Threshold
The purpose of this study was to further explore the possible relationship between photoreceptor density in the human retina and visual function. To do this, we recruited 8 healthy subjects to participate in our pilot study. The two psychophysical measurements of visual function we studied were contrast threshold and sensory eye dominance. We measured sensory eye dominance using the concept of binocular rivalry to balance our subjects’ perception of a contrast grating. Contrast threshold was measured using a grating target to determine the minimum contrast a subject can resolve. Psychophysical data was collected from different locations in our subject’s visual field. We then used the powerful tool of adaptive optics imaging to quantify the retinal photoreceptor density of both eyes of each of our subjects. These cone density measurements were compared to the measures of sensory eye dominance and contrast sensitivity at binocularly corresponding points. We found that the subjects in our small pilot study had monocular contrast threshold values that fell within the normal expected range for each tested visual field location. A few of the subjects demonstrated some level of sensory eye dominance, but this could change based on the testing location. Similar to findings in the established literature, contrast threshold could not be used to directly predict sensory eye dominance. Our cone density measurements strongly agree with the published literature at all locations, particularly Lombardo et al., which had a similar sampling window as our study. Additionally, there was no statistically significant difference between cone densities of left and right eyes at binocularly corresponding points. There was a significant difference between the cone densities of the inferior and superior retinas of our subjects, but this is likely due to a normal slight decentration of fixation within our subjects. The results of our pilot study suggest that neither contrast sensitivity nor sensory eye dominance are substantially influenced by the cone photoreceptor density for healthy subjects. Even though this result is null, it is still important because it leads us to believe that cone photoreceptors are not a major determinant of sensory eye dominance and contrast sensitivity. This would lead us to believe that the factors determining sensory eye dominance and contrast sensitivity of healthy subjects are beyond the cone photoreceptoral level.

Similar But Different

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Similar But Different
Flowers, the sole natural source of pollen and nectar for bees, present many similar features, in colour, shape, size and scent, which facilitate pollinator attraction. This similarity among stimuli requires perception of commonality but also a capacity for differentiation between similar but different stimuli. While many flowers of a similar type will elicit approach and foraging, failure to access resources on any individual flower in an array (e.g. due to depletion) will not necessarily generalize and deter further foraging. Such conditions demand that bees respond to both the similarity and differences among stimuli which may share many common features but differ individually in available resources. Two questions are raised by this challenge and will herein be addressed: how do bees perceive and respond to ''similar but different'' stimuli? And, how do bees use such cues to find rewarding flowers? Picture-object correspondence has not been previously specifically studied in invertebrates. The correspondence between picture-cue and object stimuli may offer a unique opportunity to trigger memory for corresponding targets while still retaining an important distinction between unrewarding cue and rewarding targets. Perception of pictures is not always perceived by animals as either the same as or equivalent to the intended subject. According to Fagot et al. (2000) the perceived relationship may result in confusion, independence or equivalence and is dependent upon experience. The objectives of this thesis are twofold: first, determine how bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) perceive the relationship between objects and corresponding pictures and secondly, to determine whether or not bees may be able to attend to and use pictures as cues while foraging. The correspondence of picture and object by bees was evaluated with four experiments of preference: (1) learned differentiation; spontaneous association to (2) colour, and (3) achromatic, impoverished images; and (4) learned picture cue use. Firstly, results show that bees do not confuse an object with a corresponding picture but nevertheless do perceive a relationship between them if colour cues are retained. Altered, achromatic images were not consistently treated as corresponding to coloured objects. Secondly, bees can learn to use a picture cue in a delayed matching foraging task. Results further suggest a role of three contributing factors in bumblebee picture cue use: (i) conditions of high inconsistency as to which target will be rewarding; (ii) stable target locations; and (iii) individual foraging experience. It appears that bumblebees can learn to use cues, in a delayed matching task, when the location of the corresponding target is known and stable, the individual bee has acquired some experience in successful foraging, and reward is otherwise unpredictable without the use of the cue. Bees may disregard secondary cues as noise under conditions of high target predictability whereby floral constancy or target perseveration may be most efficient, but attend to and learn such cues as signals if target reward is highly unpredictable. The conditions for this sensitivity may coincide with naturally occurring floral cycles.

Investigating Drinking Water Advisories in First Nations Communities Through Data Mining

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Investigating Drinking Water Advisories in First Nations Communities Through Data Mining
Maintaining acceptable drinking water quality is a challenge in Canadian First Nations communities, and many residents experience frequent drinking water advisories (DWAs). In this research, detailed information about drinking water systems on reserves was combined with historical advisory data to investigate the relationships between system attributes and DWAs using data mining. Decision trees were developed to identify key factors linked to the occurrence, frequency, duration and causes of advisories. The results showed that trends varied considerably by province, despite being federally managed. Operator treatment certification was found to be associated with the duration of advisories, where systems with fully trained operators were less likely to have long-lasting DWAs. The findings from data mining can be useful for informing future regulatory and funding decisions. This study also emphasized the need for maintaining an up-to-date record of First Nations system information to close existing data gaps.
