Last of the American Girls

release date: Oct 15, 2020
Last of the American Girls
From Green Day and co-authored and illustrated by artist Frank Caruso comes a timely, inspiring illustrated rendition of the Grammy winning band’s classic hit “Last of the American Girls”—the song Rolling Stone called “a fabulous left-wing love song to a rebel girl . . . when Armstrong sings, ‘she won’t cooperate,’ he’s giving her the highest compliment he can imagine.” One of the most important and influential artists of their generation, the high-energy rock band Green Day has continued to inspire millions of fans worldwide with their music, political views, and iconoclastic conviction. Now, they transform their Billboard hit “Last of the American Girls” into a full-color illustrated book of the song's lyrics. She’s a runaway of the establishment incorporated She won’t cooperate She will come in first For the end of western civilization She’s a natural disaster She’s the last of the American girls Since they exploded in the culture in 1994, Green Day has continued to surprise and energize its fans through the evolution of its music, songwriting, and artistic ambition. The band has long been ahead of its time, and “Last of the American Girls” is a testament to their vision. Released in 2010, the song about a spirited nonconformist young woman named Gloria embodies today’s cultural zeitgeist and is a salute and tribute to female empowerment and individuality. Celebrating true rebel girls—girls who push back, girls who use their voice, girls who say no—Last of the American Girls takes on both the establishment and the upwardly mobile, espousing an infectious spirit that has never been more relevant.

Layer-by-Layer Films for Biomedical Applications

release date: Feb 09, 2015
Layer-by-Layer Films for Biomedical Applications
The layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition technique is a versatile approach for preparing nanoscale multimaterial films: the fabrication of multicomposite films by the LbL procedure allows the combination of literally hundreds of different materials with nanometer thickness in a single device to obtain novel or superior performance. In the last 15 years the LbL technique has seen considerable developments and has now reached a point where it is beginning to find applications in bioengineering and biomedical engineering. The book gives a thorough overview of applications of the LbL technique in the context of bioengineering and biomedical engineering where the last years have witnessed tremendous progress. The first part familiarizes the reader with the specifics of cell-film interactions that need to be taken into account for successful application of the LbL method in biological environments. The second part focuses on LbL-derived small drug delivery systems and antibacterial agents, and the third part covers nano- and microcapsules as drug carriers and biosensors. The fourth and last part focuses on larger-scale biomedical applications of the LbL method such as engineered tissues and implant coatings.

Outlaw Pete

release date: Nov 04, 2014
Outlaw Pete
Outlaw Pete is a modern legend of a criminal who starts out in diapers and confronts the roughest edges of adulthood. It’s one of the most ambitious and original story songs Springsteen has written. When Bruce Springsteen was a little boy, he learned the story of Brave Cowboy Bill, about a pure-hearted little cowboy. It was the first of Bruce’s Western loves, which now range from John Ford movies to Mexican music to Native American art. Each of these inspirations, plus what he’s learned as a man and a rock ’n’ roller about how to combine whimsy and wisdom, were stations on the way to Outlaw Pete, a modern legend of a criminal who starts out in diapers and confronts the roughest edges of adulthood. It’s one of the most ambitious and original story songs Springsteen has written—rhapsodic and harsh, a meditation on destiny, filled with absurdities but not for one second of its eight minutes exactly a joke. It’s an elaborate musical drama, weaving into a single tapestry several styles of rock and an orchestration reminiscent of a Morricone soundtrack. Outlaw Pete is an adult book, illustrated by Frank Caruso, who drew and painted its pages. Caruso does more than illustrate the song. His approach, immaculately detailed, simple when it needs to be, parallels Springsteen’s blend of absurdity and meditation. The questions about destiny remain unanswered, as they must be, but they’re also brought into a different kind of focus. Details that pass by almost unnoticed in the lyrics become central. Reading and listening have rarely so superbly complemented each other. The result becomes the most intense kind of artistic collaboration, a vision shared. But I’m not trying to start anything, so buy it, don’t steal it, OK? —Dave Marsh

Heart Transplant

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Heart Transplant
School bullying is universally decried, bemoaned, and condemned. Newspapers, magazines, television, and movies all reflect the ugly truth ... bullying is not only on the rise, but becoming more dangerous every day. Whether it's a teenager committing suicide as a result of a Facebook posting or a group of schoolchildren taunting another autistic child and filming it for the "entertainment" of others, the longest-lasting, deepest-scarring impact of bullying is emotional, not physical. Failure to understand this has handicapped an already-insipid series of failed "solutions." Heart Transplant is aimed at actually *changing* the way we deal with perhaps the most critical issue for children and parents alike today. To accomplish this mission, an entirely new medium was created. Neither a graphic novel nor a self-help book, it uses elements of both to deconstruct bullying, and to offer both teens and their parents the true "facts of life." !--more-- Nine-year-old Sean's only experience with parenting was the series of men his alcoholic mother made him call "Daddy." He knows he doesn't belong ... anywhere. And never will. He sees himself as others see him: Outsider. When Sean comes home from school one day, he opens the door to a pair of corpses -- his latest "father's" attempt at dope-dealing ended badly. The police arrive, the bodies are bagged, and the "Welfare lady" is telling Sean how much he's going to love his new foster home when an older man suddenly crosses the threshold. He tells the social worker that he's the father of the dead man, so that makes him responsible for his "grandson." And he offers Sean a choice: come and live with him, or take his chances with foster care. Life with the man Sean comes to call "Pop" is Paradise compared to the past. A brilliant and hardworking student, Sean finally has someone to show his report card to ... and he listens to Pop harder than he ever did to a teacher. Still an Outsider, yes, but now there's one place on earth where he knows he's always welcome. And always safe. But puberty brings Sean into a new world; a world where he is bullied every day ... a world where his status as "Outsider" is confirmed in endlessly cruel ways. He never complains, but Pop quickly discovers the truth. When Sean protests that "It didn't hurt." his real father responds that he knows that's a lie ... because when his son is hurt, he hurts, too. This is Sean's first experience with empathy, and his first understanding of emotional abuse. His understanding of bullying comes later ... when Pop shows him not only its true roots, but its antidote. Pop gives his son what he needs most: A heart transplant. It is not until after Pop's death that Sean learns the special sacrifice his father had made to give him that transplant, and that final understanding is Sean's ultimate legacy. Timely and confrontational, HEART TRANSPLANT is the gripping story of young boy's transformation from bullied "outsider" to true manhood. The universality of this work is such that what Sean learns is communicated to bullied children and their parent(s) alike. It speaks with a truth that cannot be denied, but also with a response that can be replicated. Author information. Andrew Vachss is an attorney whose only clients are children. He's also the author of more than two dozen novels (including the Burke series), a long list of non-fiction pieces, and Another Chance to Get It Right: A Children's Book For Adults. It was in that book that Dark Horse published one of Vachss' first collaborations with Frank Caruso, an award-winning creator and illustrator, and the Art Director for King Features Syndicate. The piece is an example of the "triptych haiku" they developed, a three-panel illustration which has proven unparalleled in its ability to communicate. Their success in that collaboration led them to develop Heart Transplant, a book that attempts the same kind of communication in order to achieve its goal: to reset the cultural software so that people change the way they think about bullying. Frank Caruso, an award-winning creator, illustrator, and Art Director for King Features Syndicate, has developed a style that speaks to all ages. Together with Andrew Vachss, he created the "triptych haiku," a three-panel illustration which has proven unparalleled in its ability to communicate. Double Exposure on Lust
"Red hot and cool... That's what these models were, posing for nude movies and stuff, sometime posing for even wilder films. If one could keep up with these luscious bouncing babes, with fast sex and slow good-byes. They would also pose for the love of it. And how they loved. In their sex capers on film and off, they gave their all...with quite a lot to offer...in bed or out, these wild, way-out proportioned... Model maidens." -- back cover.

Encyclopaedia of Vitamin, Herbal & Nutritional Supplements
"In November 1979 I decided to join a gym to lose weight. I was 30kg overweight and very unfit," recalls Frank. "I was always a chubby kid - growing up in an Italian home it was easy to overeat. "One day I turned up eating a burger and chips and George, the owner, said, 'Frank, it's great you're training here to get fit, but if you don't change your diet, you won't live a long and healthy life'."George handed me a book and said, 'Buy this book, read it and I promise it will change your life!'" The book was The Miracle of Fasting, written by US health food advocate Paul Bragg. Frank read it in just three days and, as George had predicted, it changed his life forever. He immediately changed his eating habits - avoiding refined and processed foods, sweets, sugar, junk food, soft drinks and milk. He started eating fresh, natural foods and drinking lots of water."For the first time in my life I was eating to live and not living to eat," he says. "I realised I had a choice. I could take responsibility for my own health and live a long and healthy life, or throw caution to the wind and just keep my fingers crossed." Frank decided to give up his career to open a health food store so that he could share his newfound passion."I asked my wife, Grace: 'Do we open a health food store or build a new home?' At the time we'd just put a deposit on a block of land," he says."Grace said to me, 'It's your passion, let's open the store and we'll build a house another day'. "It still brings tears to my eyes when I tell that story." On November 1, 1982, the day he turned 28, Frank opened his health food store in Fairfield, New South Wales. "I'll never forget it - the first day was packed, all these people were walking in and I just talked and talked about this new philosophy," he says.Eventually, as people clamoured to know more, Frank started a publication, Health News, which was distributed to more than one million homes.
