What's the Matter with Kansas?

release date: Apr 01, 2007
What's the Matter with Kansas?
One of "our most insightful social observers"* cracks the great political mystery of our time: how conservatism, once a marker of class privilege, became the creed of millions of ordinary Americans With his acclaimed wit and acuity, Thomas Frank turns his eye on what he calls the "thirty-year backlash"—the populist revolt against a supposedly liberal establishment. The high point of that backlash is the Republican Party's success in building the most unnatural of alliances: between blue-collar Midwesterners and Wall Street business interests, workers and bosses, populists and right-wingers. In asking "what 's the matter with Kansas?"—how a place famous for its radicalism became one of the most conservative states in the union—Frank, a native Kansan and onetime Republican, seeks to answer some broader American riddles: Why do so many of us vote against our economic interests? Where's the outrage at corporate manipulators? And whatever happened to middle-American progressivism? The questions are urgent as well as provocative. Frank answers them by examining pop conservatism—the bestsellers, the radio talk shows, the vicious political combat—and showing how our long culture wars have left us with an electorate far more concerned with their leaders' "values" and down-home qualities than with their stands on hard questions of policy. A brilliant analysis—and funny to boot—What's the Matter with Kansas? presents a critical assessment of who we are, while telling a remarkable story of how a group of frat boys, lawyers, and CEOs came to convince a nation that they spoke on behalf of the People. *Los Angeles Times

One Market Under God

release date: Jan 01, 2001
One Market Under God
A cogent, fiercely entertaining, often scathing assault on the institutions and pretensions of the new capitalist order and the tyranny of the almighty market. At no other moment in history have the values of business and the corporation been more nakedly and arrogantly in the ascendant. In ''One Market Under God'', social critic Thomas Frank examines the morphing of the language of democracy into the cant and jargon of the marketplace. Combining popular intellectual history with a survey of recent business culture, Frank traces an idea he calls ''market populism'' - the notion that markets are, in some transcendent way, identifiable with democracy and the will of rh people. The idea that any criticism of things as they are is elitist can be seen in management literature, where downsizing and ceaseless, chaotic change are celebrated as victories for democracy ; in advertising, where an endless array of brands seek to position themselves as symbols of authenticity and rebellion; on Wall Street, where the stock market is identified as the domain of the small investor and common man ; and in the right-wing politics of the 1990s and the popular social theories of George Gilder, Francis Fukuyama and Thams Friedman.Frank''s counterattack against the onslaught of market propaganda is mounted with the weapons of common sense, a genuis for useful ridicule, and the older values of economic justice and political democracy. Lucid and intellectually probing, One Market Under God is tinged with anger, betrayal, and a certain hope for the future.

Incipitarium Ovidianum

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Incipitarium Ovidianum
Scholars have recently recognized the importance of the medieval and renaissance school tradition on classical authors for our understanding of literary theory and reading practices from the late antique period to 1600. Yet much of the primary evidence, necessary to such an investigation lies hidden in the manuscript repositories of Europe and North America. The Incipitarium Ovidianum will serve as a finding guide for scholars interested in the medieval and renaissance tradition of accessus, biographies, commentaries and Summae memoriales on the poetic corpus of Ovid. The Incipitarium lists alphabetically by their opening words all of the extant texts related to the study of Ovid from 400 to 1600. All known manuscript witnesses to the text as well as the early incunabula, modern printed editions and studies are provided. An appendix lists manuscripts which transmit glosses to the individual works. And a comprehensive bibliography of modern studies related to the study of Ovid in the Middle Ages is included in the introduction to the Incipitarium itself. The Incipitarium surveys 483 texts in manuscript and/or printed form and will be an essential research tool for all scholars working in the field of the classical tradition.

Legislation of Edward I.

Legislation of Edward I.
"THIS BOOK places before general historians the results of a legal approach to some of the most famous statutes of Edward I - notably Mortmain, Ce Donis, the statutes of Merchants, Quia Emptores and Quo Warranto - with illustrations of their practical working from cases reported in the Year Books. These statues must necessarily be discussed with reference to the broad issues of legal, political, and social policy during the reign, and so particular attention has been given to the place of legislation in a system in a system of customary law, and to various aspects of feudalism such as liberties and franchises, the lord's formidable powers of distraining his tenants, the practical effect of some of the feudal incidents, the economic structure of the family views of land law with the requirements of commerce' - Publisher.

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER II CONTINUED TROUBLE BY some strange freak of good fortune to which I was totally unaccustomed, the very next day after my summary dismissal from the trunk-maker's, I got a job in a big dairy company's business. I have forgotten exactly how it happened, but I think that one of my street chums told me he had seen the notice in the shop window, and hurrying off at once, I secured the situation. At first blush I was almost overwhelmed with the magnitude of my good fortune. For my wages were to be six shillings per week, and a pint of milk twice a day, which to me was wealth indeed, and I began to have visions of getting a little pocket-money out of my earnings, and perhaps even, blissful thought, a new suit of clothes, a possession that I had never yet enjoyed. My delight was somewhat tempered by the fact that my hours of business were to be from 4.30 A.m. to 9 P.m., on Sunday and week-day alike, in summer; and from 5.30 A.m. to 9 P.m. in winter. But of course that was merely a detail. As I had to begin at so unholy an hour in the morning, of course it was unthinkable that I could get any food in the house, and so my landlady made arrangements, in consideration of receiving the whole of my earnings textit{and the milk, to subsidise a local coffee-stall keeper to the extent of one cup of coffee and one slice of cake, price together one penny, every morning. This I bolted at the street corner, often scalding my mouth, for I need hardly say that the margin of time was never very great. And if a boy arrived late, well, there was an end, for his van had gone without him, since it might not linger, obstructing the others. Afte. swallowing my coffee, I fled as fast as my legs would carry me towards my place of business (sounds important, doesn't it ?), which, when I reach...
