Die zwölf Kapitel des Romans handeln vom Leben und vom Sterben des spanischen Metallarbeiters Buenaventura Durruti, der nach einer militanten und abenteuerlichen Jugend zur Schlüsselfigur der spanischen Revolution von 1936 geworden ist. Das Buch beginnt mit einem Prolog »Die Totenfeier« und endet mit einem Epilog über »Die Nachwelt«. Dazwischen wird die Geschichte eines proletarischen Helden erzählt, von seiner Kindheit in einer kleinen nordspanischen Stadt bis zu den »sieben Toden« Durrutis, die niemals aufgeklärt worden sind. Die Darstellung beruht auf zeitgenössischen Broschüren, Flugblättern und Reportagen, auf Reden und Memoiren und auf Interviews mit Augenzeugen, die Durruti gekannt haben. Die literarische Form des Romans steht zwischen Nacherzählung und Rekonstruktion. Der Widerspruch zwischen Fiktion und Dokument hält die politischen Widersprüche der spanischen Revolution fest. Auf den Spuren vergessener, halb verdrängter Kämpfe wird das Buch zur Recherche. In acht Glossen, die in die Handlung des Romans eingesprengt sind, stellt der Autor den historischen Kontext dar.
