The bulk of the collection documents Johnson's career during his service as Army Chief of Staff from 1964 to 1968 to include official corresponcence about soldiers' welfare issues, his many inspection trips to Vietnam, policy studies, and reports about helicopter mobility. Significant for Johnson's World War II service is a POW journal that Johnson kept in the form of a letter to his wife, Dorothy (Rennix) Johnson.
