Ten-year-old Nelio is a homeless boy, who is mortally wounded by a gunshot. He refuses medical help so is nursed by the baker who found him. He tells this man the story of his life but knows he will die when he finishes telling his story. He describes how bandits raided his village, massacred his sister and tried to force him to kill his other relatives. He fled and eventually found himself in a city where he became the leader of a a band of street children. He mostly details the lives of the other children and tells of a paradise not located on any map that can, indeed, be found. After nine days, Nelio dies.
