The Bondage of the Will

release date: Apr 15, 2019
The Bondage of the Will
In "The Bondage of the Will," Martin Luther presents a profound theological treatise that grapples with the nature of free will and divine grace. Written in 1525 as a response to the humanist philosopher Desiderius Erasmus, this seminal work employs a vigorous polemical style, blending scripture with rhetorical flair. Luther argues vehemently that human will is bound by sin and that true freedom can only be found in divine intervention and grace, effectively laying a cornerstone for Protestant thought. The treatise, steeped in the Reformation''s fervor, challenges prevailing doctrines and engages with the heavy philosophical debates of its time, notably the interplay between autonomy and predestination. Martin Luther, a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation, was influenced by his personal struggles with faith and the institutional rigidity of the Catholic Church. His theological journey, marked by the seminal moment of his 95 Theses in 1517, seeks to reconcile the tensions between human agency and God''s sovereignty. Luther''s education, his understanding of scripture, and his experiences as a monk profoundly shaped his perspective, making him a pivotal voice in religious discourse. "The Bondage of the Will" is essential reading for anyone interested in the complexities of theological thought and its implications for faith and salvation. It not only enriches the understanding of Reformation theology but also invites the modern reader to reflect on the nature of free will and the divine, making it a compelling addition to both scholarly and layperson libraries.

Traditional Nursery Songs of England With Pictures by Eminent Modern Artists by Henry Cole A diller, a dollar, A ten o''clock scholar, What makes you come so soon? You used to come at ten o''clock, And now you come at noon. A long tailed pig, or a short tailed pig, Or a pig without a tail, A sow pig, or a boar pig, Or a pig with a curly tail. As I was going up Pippen hill, Pippen hill was dirty; There I met a pretty Miss, And she dropt me a curtsey. Little Miss, pretty Miss, Blessings light upon you, If I had half a crown a day, I''d spend it all upon you. Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool?Yes, marry, have I, three bags full; One for my master, and one for my dame, And one for the little boy that lives in the lane. Bonnie lass! bonnie lass! wilt thou be mine?Thou shalt neither wash dishes nor serve the swine, But sit on a cushion and sow up a seam, And thou shalt have strawberries, sugar, and cream. BYE. O MY BABY Bye baby bunting, Father''s gone a hunting, To get a little rabbit-skin, To lap his little baby in.
