Mark the Match Boy

release date: Nov 22, 2022
Mark the Match Boy
In "Mark the Match Boy," Horatio Alger weaves a poignant tale emblematic of his hallmark themes: resilience, ambition, and the pursuit of the American Dream. Set against the harsh backdrop of urban poverty in 19th-century America, the narrative follows the young protagonist, Mark, as he navigates the struggles of life as a street vendor. Alger''s straightforward yet impactful prose captures the innocence and determination of youth while emphasizing the moral virtues of hard work and integrity. This novella is not merely a work of fiction; it serves as a social commentary on the socioeconomic conditions of the time, epitomizing the literary style associated with the ''Rags to Riches'' genre so prevalent in Alger''s oeuvre. Horatio Alger''s own life experiences profoundly influenced his storytelling. Born into a prosperous family in Massachusetts, Alger became aware of the challenges faced by the less fortunate when he embarked on a teaching career in urban settings. His subsequent struggles with personal crises and the moral imperative to uplift the downtrodden infused his works with empathy and advocacy for social mobility, making him a pioneer in children''s literature. For readers seeking inspiration and a glimpse into the spirit of perseverance amidst adversity, "Mark the Match Boy" is a compelling read that resonates with timeless truths. Alger''s narrative encourages young readers to hold fast to their dreams, portraying the possibilities of transformation through resilience and virtuous living.

Ragged Dick, Or, Street Life in New York with the Boot-Blacks Annotated and Illustrated Edition
Horatio Alger was an American writer and an author of more than one hundred books, most of which were written for young readers. His best known work is called Ragged Dick and was published in 1867. The plot of this book follows a formula made so popular by Horatio Alger that the phrase "Horatio Alger story" has entered the English language and is used to describe any person who rises from poverty to comfort as a result of his or her own hard work and honesty. The plot is simple: an adolescent boy or young man, forced by circumstances beyond his control to make his own way in life, gradually overcomes difficulties because of his honesty, work ethic, and occasional help from older men who recognize the hero''s potential.

release date: Jan 22, 2021
Ragged Dick, Or, Street Life in New York with the Boot-Blacks
Ragged Dick, Or, Street Life in New York with the Boot-Blacks by Jr. Horatio Alger Ragged Dick''s text is based on the 1868 first edition of the book, annotated for student readers. "Contexts" begins by looking at Ragged Dick through the lens of 1860''s New York and Alger''s life there. Ragged Dick is a 14-year-old licker - he smokes, drinks occasionally and sleeps on the street - but he is anxious "to move on and try to grow" spectable. "He will not steal under any circumstances and many gentlemen who are impressed by this virtue (and from his determination to succeed) offer their help. Mr. Greyson, for example, invites him to church and Mr. Whitney gives him five dollars to perform a service. Dick uses the money to open a bank account and to rent his First apartment. He increases his bank balance by practicing frugality and is educated by his roommate Fosdick in the three Rs. When Dick rescues a drowning child, his grateful father rewards him with a new suit and a job at his merchant company. With this final event, Richard is "cut off from the old wandering life he hoped never to get back" and will henceforth be called Richard Hunter, Esq.

release date: Oct 07, 2020
Ragged Dick; Or, Street Life in New York with the Boot Blacks Illustrated
Ragged Dick; or, Street Life in New York with the Boot Blacks is a Bildungsroman by Horatio Alger, Jr. serialized in Student and Schoolmate in 1867, and released as a full length novel in May 1868 by A. K. Loring. It was the first volume in the six volume Ragged Dick Series, and became Alger''s all-time bestseller. The tale follows a poor boot black''s rise to middle class respectability in 19th-century New York City. It had a favorable reception. Student and Schoolmate reported their readers were delighted with the first installment and Putnam''s Magazine thought boys would love the novel. One modern scholar considers the story a "puerile fantasy" about class assimilation. The plot and theme were repeated virtually in toto in Alger''s subsequent novels and became the grist for parodists and satirists. Ragged Dick and Alger''s Silas Snobden''s Office Boy inspired the musical comedy Shine! in 1982.

Horatio Alger Jr. January 13, 1832 - July 18, 1899) was an American writer of young adult novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on the United States during the Gilded Age.All of Alger''s juvenile novels share essentially the same theme, known as the "Horatio Alger myth" a teenage boy works hard to escape poverty. Often it is not hard work that rescues the boy from his fate but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty. The boy might return a large sum of lost money or rescue someone from an overturned carriage. This brings the boy-and his plight-to the attention of a wealthy individual.Alger secured his literary niche in 1868 with the publication of his fourth book, Ragged Dick, the story of a poor bootblack''s rise to middle-class respectability. This novel was a huge success. His many books that followed were essentially variations on Ragged Dick and featured casts of stock characters: the valiant hard-working, honest youth, the noble mysterious stranger, the snobbish youth, and the evil, greedy squire.

His publisher suggested he tour the American West for fresh material to incorporate into his fiction. Alger took a trip to California, but the trip had little effect on his writing: he remained mired in the tired theme of "poor boy makes good." The backdrops of these novels, however, became the American West rather than the urban environments of the northeastern United States.

Frank and Fearless Or the Fortunes of Jasper Kent
Frank and Fearless or The Fortunes of Jasper Kent: Large Print By Horatio Alger A dozen boys were playing ball in a field adjoining the boarding-school of Dr. Pericles Benton, in the town of Walltham, a hundred and twenty-five miles northeast of the city of New York. These boys varied in age from thirteen to seventeen. In another part of the field a few younger boys were amusing themselves. All these boys were boarding-scholars connected with the school. The ball had been knocked to a distance by the batter, and it was the duty of Nicholas Thorne, one of the oldest boys, to ran after it. But he thought of an easier way. "Cameron, run for that ball!" he cried, addressing one of the smaller boys outside the game. "I don''t want to," said little Cameron. "Did you hear what I said?" demanded Thorne, imperiously. "Yes." "Then you''d better go if you know what''s best for yourself," said the bully, frowning. "I ain''t in the game," said Cameron. "Why should I get the ball?" "Because I say so!" retorted the tyrant. "Run after it yourself, Thorne," said a lad named Davies. "It''s your business, not Cameron''s." "It''s his business, because I ordered him to do it," said Thorne, flushed and angry. "Do you think I will allow him to bully me?" "The boot''s on the other leg," said Davies, dryly. "Run after the ball, and don''t keep the game waiting." "That''s so," said half a dozen voices. "Let Cameron alone." "I won''t let him alone," said Thorne, who had by this time worked himself into a towering passion. "I''ll give him the worst flogging he ever had, if he doesn''t obey me!" Frank's Campaign, Or, Farm and Camp

release date: Jun 26, 2018
Frank's Campaign, Or, Farm and Camp
Frank''s Campaign, or, Farm and Camp by Horatio Alger The Town Hall in Rossville stands on a moderate elevation overlooking the principal street. It is generally open only when a meeting has been called by the Selectmen to transact town business, or occasionally in the evening when a lecture on temperance or a political address is to be delivered. Rossville is not large enough to sustain a course of lyceum lectures, and the townspeople are obliged to depend for intellectual nutriment upon such chance occasions as these. The majority of the inhabitants being engaged in agricultural pursuits, the population is somewhat scattered, and the houses, with the exception of a few grouped around the stores, stand at respectable distances, each encamped on a farm of its own. One Wednesday afternoon, toward the close of September, 1862, a group of men and boys might have been seen standing on the steps and in the entry of the Town House. Why they had met will best appear from a large placard, which had been posted up on barns and fences and inside the village store and postoffice. It ran as follows: WAR MEETING! The citizens of Rossville are invited to meet at the Town Hall, on Wednesday, September 24, at 3 P. M. to decide what measures shall be taken toward raising the town''s quota of twenty-five men, under the recent call of the President of the United States. All patriotic citizens, who are in favor of sustaining the free institutions transmitted to us by our fathers, are urgently invited to be present. The Hon. Solomon Stoddard is expected to address the meeting. Come one, come all. At the appointed hour one hundred and fifty men had assembled in the hall. They stood in groups, discussing the recent call and the general management of the war with that spirit of independent criticism which so eminently characterizes the little democracies which make up our New England States. By the time he died in 1899, Alger had published around a hundred volumes. Scholar John Geck observes that Alger''s themes have been transformed in modern America from their original meanings into a male Cinderella myth and are an Americanization of the traditional Jack tales. Each story has its clever hero, its "fairy godmother," and obstacles and hindrances to the hero''s rise. "However," he writes, "the true Americanization of this fairy tale occurs in its subversion of this claiming of nobility; rather, the Alger hero achieves the American Dream in its nascent form, he gains a position of middle-class respectability that promises to lead wherever his motivation may take him." The reader may speculate what Cinderella achieved as Queen and what an Alger hero attained once his middle-class status was stabilized, and "[i]t is this commonality that xes Horatio Alger rmly in the ranks of modern adaptors of the Cinderella myth." Making His Way (Illustrated)
Two boys were walking in the campus of the Bridgeville Academy. They were apparently of about the same age-somewhere from fifteen to sixteen-but there was a considerable difference in their attire. Herbert Grant was neatly but coarsely dressed, and his shoes were of cowhide, but his face indicated a frank, sincere nature, and was expressive of intelligence. His companion was dressed in a suit of fine cloth, his linen was of the finest, his shoes were calfskin, and he had the indefinable air of a boy who had been reared in luxury. He had not the broad, open face of his friend-for the two boys were close friends-but his features were finely chiseled, indicating a share of pride, and a bold, self-reliant nature. He, too, was an attractive boy, and in spite of his pride possessed a warm, affectionate heart and sterling qualities, likely to endear him to those who could read and understand him. Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. Essentially, all of Alger''s novels share the same theme: a young boy struggles through hard work to escape poverty. Critics, however, are quick to point out that it is not the hard work itself that rescues the boy from his fate, but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty, which brings him into contact with a wealthy elder gentleman, who takes the boy in as a ward. The boy might return a large sum of money that was lost or rescue someone from an overturned carriage, bringing the boy—and his plight—to the attention of some wealthy individual. It has been suggested that this reflects Alger''s own patronizing attitude to the boys he tried to help.

Ragged Dick and Struggling Upward

Ragged Dick and Struggling Upward
From the 1860''s through the 1890s, Horatio Alger wrote hundreds of novels to teach young boys the merits of honesty, hard work, and cheerfulness in the face of adversity. As Carl Bode points out in his introduction, Horatio Alger filled a void in American literature and met scant competition both in the nature and the number of his works. Like his heroes, Alger rose to the top by chance, coincidence, and hard work. The hero of Ragged Dick is a veritable "diamond in the rough"—as innately virtuous as he is streetwise and cocky. Immediately popular with young readers, the novel also appealed to parents, who repsonded to its colorful espousal of the Protestant ethic. Struggling Upward, published nearly thirty years later, followed the same time-tested formulas, and despite critical indifference it, too, had mass appeal. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
