How does one make sense of the role of religion in violence, and of perpetrators of violence who cite religion as a motivation? This encyclopedia includes a wide range of entries: biographies of key figures, historical events, religious groups, countries and regions where religion and violence have intersected, and practices, rituals, and processes of religious violence.

The correctional system in the United States and elsewhere suffers from numerous problems (Welch, 1996, Austin and Irwin, 2001). One of the most important issues is that it is hard to obtain accurate information about corrections, incarceration, and prisoners. Consequently, many falsehoods, myths, misconceptions, misrepresentations, and stereotypes about this field have been developed by individuals, organizations, and institutions.To address this problem, I identify the common myths of corrections, review the most important cultural industries that are responsible for developing the misconceptions, and provide appropriate examples from the respective industries that demonstrate how the myths are used. To do this, it is necessary to situate this endeavor in an appropriate epistemology. I use the radical/critical perspective, which I believe best informs this topic.In this chapter, I explore the importance of mythmaking about crime, criminal justice, and corrections; look at why myths are successful; examine the important role of cultural industries, such as fashion, advertising, documentaries, fictional treatments, motion pictures, and the mass media/news media; and offer some concluding thoughts about remedying this problem.

The Parahio Valley hosts the type section of the Parahio Formation, a unit that occurs widely in the Tethyan Himalaya. Recent revision and recollection of trilobites from multiple horizons within this unit show that it spans the latest part of State 4 and much of Stage 5 of the Cambrian Period. Broadly coeval Parahio Formation deposits occur in the Zanskar Valley some 150 km to the northwest. A variety of small shelly fossils have been recovered by acid dissolution of carbonate beds within the Parahio Formation from both these sections, and these are described herein. They include tetract and pentact sponge spicules belonging to hexactinellid sponges, chancelloriid spicules belonging to Chancelloria sp. and new species of Archiasterella , A. n. sp., shells of a helcionelloid comparable to Igorella maidipingensis , the hyolithid-like Cuptittheca , sp., a poorly preserved hyolithid, a meraspid trilobite that may belong to ptychopariid, and an assortment of spinose microfossils of uncertain affinity. No conodont or paraconodont specimens were recovered, in contrast to an earlier report of microfossils from one horizon at this locality, and inspection of those earlier reported micofossils suggest that they may have been detached chancelloriid spicules. These newly recovered microfossils are consistent with the trilobite-based middle Cambrian age determination for these formations and are inconsistent with the late Cambrian age for the top of the Parahio Formation in its type section by some earlier workers. Individual small shelly fossils taxa show variable ranges within the section, and lie within known stratigraphic ranges for comparable forms known from sections elsewhere in the world. The newly described species A. n. sp. provides the first biostratigraphic link for the Parahio Formation between the Parahio and Zanskar Valleys.

Compare the fuel efficiency of hybrid automobiles to conventional automobiles for an urban and a highway driving scenario. Overall, there are two main purposes for this study. One is to test whether the hybrid automobile, both in the virtual and real experiments, achieves a greater efficiency compared to a conventional automobile. The second is to determine if the control strategy behind a hybrid system significantly affects the fuel efficiency of the system.

Although many people consider excessive police violence disconcerting, if, when, and how they voice their opinion or respond by taking some sort of action has generally remained empirically unknown. In the hope of understanding this process, Ross has developed a four-stage model, based on a review of the literature and on interviews with the relevant actors. He then uses this tool to analyze police violence that occurred in Toronto, Canada and New York City, over a fifteen-year period. To better focus the study, he uses in-depth case studies of three well-publicized cases of police violence from each city, matched on important criteria. This study addresses a difficult, timely, and important topic for victims, for police personnel, and for society. Ross concludes that, in general, most individuals do not respond to police use of excessive force; further, if and when they do usually depends on the context of the violence. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, Ross''s model integrates a variety of approaches to improve our understanding of how communities come to define and control the use of force by police, including literature on the role of media efforts and their impact upon police violence. The work concludes with an analysis of the reasons why people react so infrequently to incidents of excessive force.

Academic research on state crime has focused on the illegal actions of individuals and organizations (i.e., syndicates and corporations). Interchangeably labeled governmental crime, delinquency, illegality, or lawlessness, official deviance and misconduct, crimes of obedience, and human rights violations, state crime has largely been considered in relation to insurgent violence or threats to national security. Generally, it has been seen as a phenomenon endemic to authoritarian countries in transitional and lesser developed contexts.
