Rudin
Rudin was written by Turgenev in the immediate aftermath of the Crimean War, when it became obvious to many educated Russians that reform was needed. Rudin is often compared to Pushkin''s Eugene Onegin and Lermontov''s Pechorin.

Sketches from a Hunter's Album

release date: Dec 10, 1990
Sketches from a Hunter's Album
Turgenev''s first major prose work is a series of twenty-five Sketches: the observations and anecdotes of the author during his travels through Russia satisfying his passion for hunting. His album is filled with moving insights into the lives of those he encounters - peasants and landowners, doctors and bailiffs, neglected wives and bereft mothers - each providing a glimpse of love, tragedy, courage and loss, and anticipating Turgenev''s great later works such as First Love and Fathers and Sons. His depiction of the cruelty and arrogance of the ruling classes was considered subversive and led to his arrest and confinement to his estate, but these sketches opened the minds of contemporary readers to the plight of the peasantry and were even said to have led Tsar Alexander II to abolish serfdom. Turgenev''s masterpiece of generational conflict shocked Russian society when it was published in 1862 and continues today to seem as fresh and outspoken as it did to those who first encountered its nihilistic hero. Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright. His first major publication, a short story collection entitled A Sportsman''s Sketches, was a milestone of Russian Realism, and his novel Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction.

First Love by Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev
The party had long ago broken up. The clock struck half-past twelve. There was left in the room only the master of the house and Sergei Nikolaevitch and Vladimir Petrovitch. The master of the house rang and ordered the remains of the supper to be cleared away. ''And so it''s settled, '' he observed, sitting back farther in his easy-chair and lighting a cigar; ''each of us is to tell the story of his first love. It''s your turn, Sergei Nikolaevitch.''Sergei Nikolaevitch, a round little man with a plump, light-complexioned face, gazed first at the master of the house, then raised his eyes to the ceiling. ''I had no first love, '' he said at last; ''I began with the second.''''How was that?''''It''s very simple. I was eighteen when I had my first flirtation with a charming young lady, but I courted her just as though it were nothing new to me; just as I courted others later on. To speak accurately, the first and last time I was in love was with my nurse when I was six years old; but that''s in the remote past. The details of our relations have slipped out of my memory, and even if I remembered them, whom could they interest

Mitya's Love

Mitya's Love
Ivan Bunin started working upon Mitya''s Love in Grasse in the summer of 1924. In the course of writing plot lines were changing continuously. The first version (marked as of June 3, 1924, by Vera Muromtseva) told the story of a ''moral fall'' of a young man who''s been degraded and compromised by a local village counterman. The theme of Mitya''s love for Katya appeared later and soon became the major one. Some versions were full of details of country life, Alyonka''s proposed marriage and Moscow''s bohemian life Katya fell victim of. Most of these sub-plots were later omitted.

Virgin Soil

release date: Jul 13, 2019
Virgin Soil
Turgenev was the first writer who was able, having both Slavic and universal imagination enough for it, to interpret modern Russia to the outer world, and Virgin Soil was the last word of his greater testament. It was the book in which many English readers were destined to make his acquaintance about a generation ago, and the effect of it was, like Swinburne''s Songs Before Sunrise, Mazzini''s Duties of Man, and other congenial documents, to break up the insular confines in which they had been reared and to enlarge their new horizon. Afterwards they went on to read Tolstoi, and Turgenev''s powerful and antipathetic fellow-novelist, Dostoievsky, and many other Russian writers: but as he was the greatest artist of them all, his individual revelation of his country''s predicament did not lose its effect. Writing in prose he achieved a style of his own which went as near poetry as narrative prose can do. without using the wrong music: while over his realism or his irony he cast a tinge of that mixed modern and oriental fantasy which belonged to his temperament. He suffered in youth, and suffered badly, from the romantic malady of his century, and that other malady of Russia, both expressed in what M. Haumand terms his Hamletisme. But in Virgin Soil he is easy and almost negligent master of his instrument, and though he is an exile and at times a sharply embittered one, he gathers experience round his theme as only the artist can who has enriched leis art by having outlived his youth without forgetting its pangs, joys, mortifications, and love-songs.
