Tracings in Snow
Scott J. Brooks has achieved a great sense of tender and timeless poetry. Whether readers come from small rural Wisconsin towns or remote villages in Turkey or Japan, they will feel cleansed with the haunting purity and mystical echo of these poems. The craft he uses to describe nature and its unique kaleidoscope of wonder pulls you so close that there is no longer a subject-object relationship with the poems, but rather a pure experience of being the poems themselves. While reading Brooks¿ poetry, the soul slowly rewinds itself back to the innocence of childhood and reclaims the beauty of looking at the world through excitement soaked eyes and mountain grinning joy. This is a splendid collection, deserving wide readership for generations to come.

Seabees in the Joint Fight

release date: May 22, 2025
Seabees in the Joint Fight
The Naval Construction Force (NCF), also referred to as the SEABEEs, constitutes a significant asset to the joint fight in the Global War on Terror (GWOT). The NCF has a legacy of adapting to change and rising to meet new mission challenges. The lessons of this history, in combination with a review of recent changes in organization and tasking, and examples of the developing role of SEABEEs in a post-9/11 environment, offer a robust picture of the face of the NCF today and provide insight into ways it can best contribute now and in the future. Significant changes within the NCF reflect the shifting demands that the SEABEEs are adapting to meet. Organizational and procedural changes at the Navy and DOD levels describe the vision driving these demands and offer opportunities and challenges to the NCF. One important example is the relatively new Global Force Management (GFM) process which has improved the method by which US commanders can request engineering support and has provided broader exposure for NCF capabilities to the other services. Additionally, incorporation of the NCF within the new Naval Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) provides evidence that the Navy recognizes the unique and important role SEABEEs can play within the new maritime vision. Recent history provides ample evidence of the NCF''s impressive capabilities, especially in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). All of these indicators of an improving landscape and successful employment paint a compelling picture of the high value role of the SEABEEs. Empire of Secrets
From the Eternal City of Rome to the remote outpost of Roman-occupied Judea comes a fresh new mystery series by J. Brooks Van Dyke which evokes the feel of the ancient world in the final days of Christ''s life. Like his other mysteries, Van Dyke''s Empire of Secrets evolves into a hotbed of intrigue, espionage, romance and bitter betrayals as he transports his readers to the political upheavals in Judea in 33 A.D. Caught up in the same conflict, Gaius Secundus, a recent graduate of Rome''s military academy, has been dispatched to Judea to find his older brother''s assassin. In his desperate search for truth, Gaius uncovers a deadly plot that rocks the ancient world, throwing the young Roman warrior into turmoil and a spiritual warfare of his own. What web turned his brother against family honor? What great deception touched the lives of two very different women? What evil scheme threatened the Peace of Rome? The call to redemption stirs him even more: Was Jesus the Nazarene merely another zealot? Or was Jesus the real Messiah, the long- awaited Deliverer, to whom the Law and Prophets pointed? "Well researched, Empire of Secrets sweeps us into the past, over the Judean hillsides marred with political intrigue and spiritual upheaval. Today''s themes are there as well: vivid characters caught up in betrayal, romance, secrets, and spiritual redemption.

Thunder Lake

Thunder Lake
Brooks'' entire world-view centers around achieving sanity by immersing yourself in Nature: "I remember the sun/receding behind wild geraniums.../as the last light unfolded/ its veil of partial prisms/into my half closed eyes...//Then thick migrations of fog/passed through my body/with perfect ease//l became a shadow of myself, a ghostly wind/brushing the cool wet grassy fields." ("The Fall," pp.8-9). In a way, yes, the book, is one vast buddhistic meditation, cleansing through meditative immersion in the essence of divine Nature, living as close as possible to Nature.Brooks works with the disabled, and it''s rather obvious that what he brings with him to his work is his vast vision of curing through a religious-romantic (in the historical sense) unselving into the world around him: "The restless water keeps giving me waves/The staunch wind keeps giving me leaves/So long as the sun rises each day/I am rich." ("Lake Superior," p.34).This is a first book and hopefully Brooks won''t take the path that too many beginning poets take toward over-complification of fresh, original visions. This original vision is enough, ca sufit! , as we follow Brooks'' path into relating the world around him --including such outwardly simple things as campfires --to larger remembrances of time past: "The longer I dwell/on the soft dance of blue flickering light/the more dream-like it seems. The burning incense/brings me back/to when I was fifteen." ("Campfire Memory," p.3).--Hugh Fox, E. Lansing, MI

Conducting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Diverse Undergraduate Psychology Classrooms

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Conducting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Diverse Undergraduate Psychology Classrooms
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is a burgeoning field of research that aims to evaluate different instructional strategies in terms of their effectiveness in promoting learning of course-relevant skills and knowledge, and to enhance student motivation and persistence. Within the field of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, various methods may be used to explore a wide range of topics pertaining to cognition, learning, and instruction in real classroom settings with diverse student populations. We explain how backward course design provides a template for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning projects by identifying specific targets for instruction. Backward course design leads instructors to consider of what sorts of learning activities might facilitate student achievement of the learning objectives and how to measure whether the objectives have been achieved post-instruction. We describe different Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research designs ranging from pretest/posttest, to quasi-experimental, to within-class experiments that test psychological theories of learning and development. We illustrate these designs with recent Scholarship of Teaching and Learning projects in which we introduced Wikipedia editing, online MyPsychLab learning activities, and collaborative writing-to-learn exercises into our psychology courses, and then evaluated their impact on student learning and motivation. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning projects provide an impetus for instructors to collaborate in course design with the goal of evaluating the effectiveness of their pedagogy across multiple course sections. Conducting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning offers opportunities for faculty in undergraduate teaching positions to develop a program of research that yields tangible benefits for students in terms of promoting better learning and retention of course material, and increasing motivation and agency in learning.

Estimating Cost and Quality Implications of an Online Solution for the Army ROTC Military History Requirement

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Estimating Cost and Quality Implications of an Online Solution for the Army ROTC Military History Requirement
This exploratory study attempted to estimate how the issues of cost and quality would be affected by employing an online solution as one method of accomplishing the Army ROTC military history requirement. Background on the Army ROTC program and the military history requirement are provided. A series of cost estimates were used to explore cost implications. A focused literature review, framed and complemented by the initial literature review, was used to explore implications regarding quality. Cost estimating identified the potential of a cost savings. Also, both the general and focused literature reviews were found to overwhelmingly support the notion that online learning was as good as, if not better than, face-to-face learning. Two recommendations were offered: further develop the issues in this exploration through a pilot study, and explore the feasibility of a linkage between the Army ROTC military history requirement and Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) testing.
