Bayesian Nonparametrics for Causal Inference and Missing Data

release date: Aug 23, 2023
Bayesian Nonparametrics for Causal Inference and Missing Data
Bayesian Nonparametrics for Causal Inference and Missing Data provides an overview of flexible Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) methods for modeling joint or conditional distributions and functional relationships, and their interplay with causal inference and missing data. This book emphasizes the importance of making untestable assumptions to identify estimands of interest, such as missing at random assumption for missing data and unconfoundedness for causal inference in observational studies. Unlike parametric methods, the BNP approach can account for possible violations of assumptions and minimize concerns about model misspecification. The overall strategy is to first specify BNP models for observed data and then to specify additional uncheckable assumptions to identify estimands of interest. The book is divided into three parts. Part I develops the key concepts in causal inference and missing data and reviews relevant concepts in Bayesian inference. Part II introduces the fundamental BNP tools required to address causal inference and missing data problems. Part III shows how the BNP approach can be applied in a variety of case studies. The datasets in the case studies come from electronic health records data, survey data, cohort studies, and randomized clinical trials. Features • Thorough discussion of both BNP and its interplay with causal inference and missing data • How to use BNP and g-computation for causal inference and non-ignorable missingness • How to derive and calibrate sensitivity parameters to assess sensitivity to deviations from uncheckable causal and/or missingness assumptions • Detailed case studies illustrating the application of BNP methods to causal inference and missing data • R code and/or packages to implement BNP in causal inference and missing data problems The book is primarily aimed at researchers and graduate students from statistics and biostatistics. It will also serve as a useful practical reference for mathematically sophisticated epidemiologists and medical researchers.

Rethinking the Welfare State

release date: Jan 11, 2013
Rethinking the Welfare State
Rethinking the Welfare State offers a comprehensive and comparative analysis of social welfare policy in an international context, with a particular emphasis on the US and Canada. The authors investigate the claim that a decentralized delivery of government supported goods and services enables policy objectives to be achieved in a more innovative and efficient way, but at a lower cost. Secondly they examine the effectiveness of the voucher system as a solution to problematic welfare concerns. While this system has shown much promise in improving welfare, there have been problems for institutions unable to attract enough voucher-assisted consumers to ensure their survival. In this context, the authors examine major social programmes such as food stamps, primary and secondary education, post-secondary education, labour market training, childcare, healthcare, legal aid, low-income housing, long-term care and pensions.

Worshipping the One True God

release date: Nov 01, 2007
Worshipping the One True God
Worshipping the One True God Human nature has changed very little over the centuries. Overtime men have forsaken God''s ways and created their own ways to worship God. Instead of creating idols made by hands they create idols with their imaginations. Jesus Christ, in his time, was at constant loggerheads with the religious leaders of his time. Most of them thought that they had all the right answers. Most of them believed that they did not need Jesus'' ministry. He became a stumble stone and a rock of offense to them. Man''s way is never God''s way. God has desired a family who will listen to him, believe him and do his will. Each member of God''s family is important and has a special purpose in the body of Christ. Each member is endued with power from on high and can perform signs, miracles and wonders. While attending the University of Rhode Island in the middle 1970''s the author encountered a group of Christian students the introduced him to God''s Word. He took several biblical classes with this group. Over the following thirty-two years he has taken several more from various groups. He has run bible fellowships in his home over the years. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New York at Albany. He currently is a middle school teacher in Rhode Island. He and his wife, Diana, have nine-year old triplets and they run a family fellowship in their home. The author continues to study and is working on his second book, As for Me and My House, We Will Serve The Lord.

Innovation In The Face Of Adversity: Major-General Sir Percy Hobart And The 79th Armoured Division (British)

release date: Nov 06, 2015
Innovation In The Face Of Adversity: Major-General Sir Percy Hobart And The 79th Armoured Division (British)
On 11 March 1943, the Chief of the British Imperial General Staff, Field Marshal Sir Alan Brooke, made a momentous decision in committing an entire British armored division, the 79th, to the task of developing equipment, tactics, and capabilities to penetrate the “Atlantic Wall,” in anticipation of an Allied amphibious invasion of northwest Europe. British leaders chose Major-General Sir Percy Hobart to command this division, largely because of Hobart’s affinity for leading and training armored formations, but also due to Hobart’s reputation as an individualist, known to seek out unique solutions to unforeseen challenges. This thesis examines the wartime history of this unit—concentrating on aspects of equipment, tactics, organization and leadership that enabled it to ultimately succeed beyond anyone’s expectations. More important, this organization provides valuable lessons for current transformation efforts. The key lessons that this subject provide include: the need for leadership that combines vision with action; a close cooperation between the military-industrial complex and the end user; and allowing space in the force structure for a unit that can perform not only standard combat missions, but can also serve as experimentation test-bed and conduit for new ideas, whether in the form of capabilities, organizational structure, or doctrine.

Interferon-mediated Block in the Cell Cycle and Alteration of Integrin Expression in an in Vitro Model of Sjögren's Syndrome

Interferon-mediated Block in the Cell Cycle and Alteration of Integrin Expression in an in Vitro Model of Sjögren's Syndrome
The sialoadenitis seen in Sjögren''s syndrome, an idiopathic, autoimmune exocrinopathy, is characterized by lymphocytic infiltration, acinar cell atrophy, and diminished salivary flow. Increased expressions of laminin, a laminin receptor, and cytokines are also noted. Several in vivo characteristics of the sialoadenitis are also evident in a cytokine-treated salivary gland ductal epithelial cell line. To elucidate mechanisms of salivary gland pathology, the effects of two cytokines, interferon gamma and tumor necrosis factor alpha, on cell proliferation and expressions of basement membrane proteins and alpha-3 integrin were evaluated in cultured salivary gland cells. In cytokine-treated cell monolayers, immunoprecipitation, immunoperoxidase, and Western Blot analysis demonstrated a moderate intracellular accumulation of an immature laminin product, but not fibronectin or collagen IV, concurrent with decreased cell proliferation. Results from RNase Protection assays suggested that the laminin accumulation was unlikely due to increased laminin beta chain gene expression. Furthermore, a significant reduction of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase expression was noted with prolonged cytokine treatment, suggesting metabolic defects. To explore the effects of cytokines on acinar cell pathology, cells were grown on Matrigel, where they formed acini with polarized nuclei. Cytokine treatment arrested cells in G1 phase of the cell cycle, as evaluated by flow cytometry, which preceded significant morphological changes and decreased viability. By immunoprecipitation, an altered form of alpha-3 integrin was evident in cultured acinar cells treated with cytokines for prolonged periods, but not in untreated cells. Cytoklines caused no significant changes in laminin expression in acinar cells. From this study, it was evident that the combination of interferon gamma and tumor necrosis factor alpha resulted in a block in G1 phase for acinar cells. This cell cycle arrest occurred prior to accumulation of the alpha-3 integrin variant or significant degenerative cellular changes. Information from the present and previous studies suggest that cytokines may alter adhesion and block cell cycle progression in acinar cells in Sjögren''s syndrome sialoadenitis. Further studies may help elucidate how these cytokine-mediated cellular changes contribute to acinar cell death.
