The Role of Information Technology Education Within the Current Secondary Level Information Communication Technology Education Program in Wisconsin
This mixed methods descriptive study looks to answer the following research questions in regard to secondary education: 1) aside from general business and marketing skills, what Information Communication Technology (ICT) knowledge and skills should secondary-level ICT Education contribute to a Business Management and Administration program of study, 2) how should a student develop their ICT knowledge and skills within the context of their academic and career development coursework, and 3) how should students experience ICT in their preparation to competently work in Business Management and Administration? The study found that business and education respondents differed in their support and application of information communications technology (ICT). While they differ in software and hardware preference in their respective settings, there is agreement of fundamental expectations on student proficiency across word processing, visual presentation, and spreadsheet applications. Education respondents, especially in regard to ICT competencies for students taking Business and information technology focused courses employ the Microsoft Office Suite in the preparation of students for business career pathways.

Autoantibodies and Vasculitis in a Mouse Model of Sjogren's Syndrome

release date: Jan 01, 1993
Autoantibodies and Vasculitis in a Mouse Model of Sjogren's Syndrome
The MRL-lpr/lpr (MRL/l) mouse spontaneously develops an autoimmune disease characteristic of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and primary and secondary Sjogren''s syndrome (SS). These characteristics include lymphoproliferation, vasculitis, and production of various autoantibodies. It is known that autoantibody levels to laminin and vimentin are increased in human SS and related disorders. In the present study an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbant Assay (ELISA) was used to measure autoantibody levels to vimentin, desmin, and laminin in MRL/1 and Balb/c control mice. Serum autoantibody levels to vimentin and desmin were increased in the MRL/l mice compared to controls, but no difference in levels of antilaminin autoantibodies was noted between the strains. Histologic examination of renal tissue from these mice demonstrated that the significant increase in mononuclear cells surrounding desmin-containing vascular smooth muscle occurred at the same age as the rise in serum levels of anti-desmin autoantibodies. It therefore seems likely that the desmin in vascular smooth muscle plays a potential role in the autoimmune disease in this strain. Future studies measuring levels of these autoantibodies in sera from patients with SLE, SS, or other connective tissue diseases (CTD) could identify further similarities between the human and murine models of autoimmune connective tissue diseases.

A Study of Adiabatic and Diabatic Flow Boiling in Parallel Microchannels and Fractal-like Branching Microchannels

release date: Jan 01, 2009
A Study of Adiabatic and Diabatic Flow Boiling in Parallel Microchannels and Fractal-like Branching Microchannels
A one-dimensional numerical model has been developed to study diabatic and adiabatic flow boiling in microchannels. This model accounts for developing flow effects and variable property effects. The model uses correlations for void fraction and two-phase multipliers found in the literature. The model has been used to study the performance differences between diabatic flow in single-phase and two-phase flow in fractal-like branching channels. It has also been used to examine the performance differences between diabatic two-phase flow boiling in these same fractal-like branching channels and straight parallel channels with identical wall surface areas. The model also was used to study pressure drop and exit quality differences for adiabatic two-phase flow boiling between fractal-like branching channels, with different geometries than the diabatic cases, and parallel channels again with identical wall surface areas. Results from experiments examining flow boiling in fractal-like branching channels are also reported. These results include channel pressure drop and void fraction for mass flow rates ranging from 100 to 225 g/min and inlet subcooling levels of 0 to 5 °C. The fractal-like branching network studied had four branching levels, a length ratio of 0.7071, a channel width ratio of 0.7071, a channel height of 150 um, a total channel length of 18 mm and a terminal channel width of 100 [mu]m. The channel pressure drops varied from 20 kPa to 90 kPa. These results were also compared to results from the 1-D model, and the model showed good agreement with the pressure drop results. The agreement with the void fraction results was not as good driven primarily by noise in the experimental measurement.

CSET Analyses of China's Technology Policies and Ecosystem
China aspires to global leadership in numerous emerging technology areas, and understanding the steps China is taking at home and abroad to achieve its goals will allow U.S. officials to favorably shape technological and strategic competition with China. This paper focuses on China’s internal actions to advance and implement its technology-related policy goals, and complements a companion brief on steps the PRC is taking abroad to become more competitive.*
