The influence of managed care on the practice of optometry has resulted in the transfer patient utilization control, mode of reimbursement, and patient satisfaction from the practitioner to plan administrators. A practice-initiated plan addresses the concerns within the current trends of managed care. A program such as this would exist as an eyecare benefit fund specifically targeting small business employees. Large managed vision care plans have historically avoided small businesses as a possible market due to low utilization rates and the lack of affordability for the small business owner. A private practitioner who wishes to increase the amount of private-pay patients visiting his/her office could implement a practice-initiated plan in conjunction with small businesses in his/her community.
