The results indicate that health sciences members of the ASMF illustrated historical activities and characteristics that lead to defining disciplines and professional fields of sports medicine. The processes of change of health sciences professionals into disciplines of sports medicine were influenced by forces driving the need for change, and responded to by implementation of change activities. The findings of this study also indicate that the ASMF evolved through historical activities and characteristics defining multidisciplinary, inter-disciplinary and organisational field constructs. The ASMF was influenced by forces driving change to construct a multidisciplinary approach to their membership, and responded through implementing change in their organisational activities. The ASMF was also faced with forces driving change in terms of expanding the multidisciplinary approach through inter-disciplinary activities and organisational structures. This study contributes to the change management literature by describing historical activities and characteristics of health sciences members of the ASMF. It adds to the literature of forces driving change, transformation, shift, strategic change, planned change and emergent change. It also contributes to the literature defining disciplines, multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary. The findings also provide contributions to the literature describing characteristics of a professional field and an organisational field.
