Three Henry Currans

release date: Sep 05, 2018
Three Henry Currans
This study follows three Curran families in the Canberra district from the 1820s to the 1960s. The first Henry Curran was an emerging Catholic journalist, whose life was cut short. The second was a champion blacksmith who lived an industrious life at his forge at Ginninderra. The third, `Babe¿ Curran, was larger-than-life. His wool records make him a key figure in the wider story of Australia¿s post-war wool boom. Other interesting stories emerge along the way. There is transported Irish rebel, John Casey, who earned his freedom helping to track down Canberra¿s first bushranger in 1828. There is the courage and willpower of Margaret Conba who was deserted by her husband, yet managed to raise a large family in 1860s Queanbeyan. There are the lives of Tom Gribble and Kate Warren, who established themselves as innovative farmers and overcame the intimidation of the Gungahlin `squire¿. There is the heroic stance of James Lodge, a Luddite rebel transported to Australia in 1817, as well as the slandered character of his nephew, Thomas, the Breadalbane innkeeper, who risked (and lost) all in defending his reputation. Just as remarkable is the story of Thomas¿ parents, Henry Lodge and Rebecca Facer, who ultimately failed in their dream of setting up a country-style inn in old Goulburn. And there are the Gundaroo teachers, Margaret Phillips and Alfred Rich, who reinvented themselves through migration.

Walled Prison, Walled Garden - Or Both? The GDR and Images of Education

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Walled Prison, Walled Garden - Or Both? The GDR and Images of Education
This paper first examines the broad context of German historiography, then moves on to specific recollections of educational life in the GDR. The paper then attempts to link issues of education in the German Democratic Republic to larger forces of media, history and memory, arguing that both film makers and historians have viewed the nature of repression in German Democratic Republic in the post-unification period in several limited ways. The latter part of the paper examines the several films of the post-unification period, linking them to changes in the historiographical perceptions in GDR history, offering a model which suggests that while the German Democratic Republic was oppressive, it was also a nation where â normal lifeâ was possible, that the whole GDR was as a metaphor, a kind of dysfunctional, educative state. It concludes with a caution for educators in their use of film as history.

Tracing the Effects of Agricultural Commodity Prices on Food Processing Costs

release date: Jan 01, 2003
Tracing the Effects of Agricultural Commodity Prices on Food Processing Costs
Although food processing sector production is inherently linked to the availability and prices of agricultural materials (MA), this link appears to be weakening due to adaptations in input costs, technology, and food consumption patterns. This study assesses the roles of these changes on food processors costs and output prices, with a focus on the demand for primary agricultural commodities. Our analysis of the 4-digit U.S. food processing industries for 1972-1992 is based on a cost-function framework, augmented by a profit maximization specification of output pricing, and a virtual price representation for agricultural materials and capital. We find that falling virtual prices of MA and input substitution have provided a stimulus for MA demand. However, scale effects have been MA-saving relative to intermediate food products, and disembodied technical change has strongly contributed to declining primary agricultural materials demand relative to most other inputs.

Charles Peirce's Pragmatism and Its Significance in Education

Charles Peirce's Pragmatism and Its Significance in Education
It may prove somewhat helpful, in the understanding of, Charles Sanders Peirce''s writings, to include some brief biographical comment on the man. Peirce was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on September 10, 1839, the second son of Benjamin and Sarah Peirce. His father, a professor of mathematics at Harvard, was the foremost mathematician of his time in America, The father took pains to give his brilliant son a superior training in the theory and practice of experimental science, mathematics, logic, and philosophy. It is reported that the father tried to teach the son the art of concentration "at a tender age" by playing rapid games of double dummy with him that lasted from 10:00 P.M. till dawn. It is also reported that when Charles began to read philosophers in his teens, his father would get him to repeat their proofs "and in a very few words would usually rip them up and show them empty."
