Canberra

release date: Nov 01, 2023
Canberra
This second volume of McDonald''s history of the Canberra-Queanbeyan district, begins in 1824, when the first pastoralists appeared and concludes in 1861, the eve of Robertson''s land reforms. For the local Aboriginal bands, this was a catastrophe. For the British, it was about pastureland to feed the colony. McDonald covers the 1838-42 period, when the colony switched from a convict model to free immigration. It was also a time of debilitating drought and economic ruin. He also examines the power of dominant family blocs (Campbells, Palmers, Murrays, Johnstons, Wrights, etc.), the uneasy imposition of British law on the ''frontier'', the gold rushes of the 1850s, and the ever-increasing pressure for political reform. Canberra II drills down into the lives of ordinary people. It reveals some of the more elusive topics: the stories of women, children, LGBQTI+ individuals, the working poor, and the earliest ethnic households and enclaves. Along the way, McDonald breaks new ground. A new pastoral chronology is constructed, acts of pastoral bastardry are exposed, Canberra''s female bushranger, Mrs Winter, is unearthed, the Anglican foundation myth is debunked, and he even asks whether AFL had its origins on the Molonglo.

What's The Worst That Can Happen?

release date: Jan 06, 2023
What's The Worst That Can Happen?
In 2006, I was told by a spirit guide that I would write a book. Yes, I see spirits. “That sounds good but what story had I to tell? Tell the story of how you came from the slums of Glasgow, pushed away your gifts of ‘sixth sense’ and rediscovered them as an adult.” Okay, from the slums of Glasgow to discovering that you’re a psychic in your late forties sounds good but the part in between might sound uninteresting. “Think about it,” I was told, “You will soon be given the opportunity to write.” My life was to follow two paths; communicating with spirit and learning to replace fear with love. My guidance came from two sources; spirit and dreams. My childhood had been a ‘lie’ and I came to realise that much of my adult life was a ‘lie’ also. I wasn’t quite the person that I thought I was. During my childhood I had been the victim of abuse from an adult who I trusted. Unfortunately, I continued with this habit as an adult and would have difficulty facing up to anything. I had two options: run, as I had been doing, or face the truth about myself. I opted for the latter. Today I do not acknowledge negativity. I learn from every experience and think positively. It does help somewhat when the guidance that I receive is ‘out of this world!’

Kill Them All!

release date: Jan 22, 2021
Kill Them All!
The most famous event of the thirteenth century war against the Cathars of the Languedoc is an alleged command given by an Abbot "Kill them all! God will know His own". Almost everyone has heard of it, even if the context is a little hazy. For well over six hundred years the claim - made by a sympathetic contemporary clerical writer - was accepted as fact. But historians over the last hundred years have been more sceptical, often describing the story of the command as "apocryphal". Almost no original work on the question has been carried out by modern historians in the English-speaking world, and only a little by Francophone historians. This monograph aims to provide a thoroughgoing reassessment of the question. It presents a mass of new evidence, exposes previously unrecognised significance in existing evidence, and frames new arguments that will undoubtedly shift received opinion among historians.

Kill Them All

Kill Them All
Did a medieval Abbot really lead troops into war? And did he really command them to kill the population of an entire city - men, women and children; the old, crippled and infirm; even babies? This question has tantalised historians for centuries, and credible arguments have been advanced both for and against. In this work, James McDonald, sumarises these arguments and develops a number of new arguments of his own, which decisively tip the balance away from view that has predominated for over a century. This is the first ever comprehensive assessment of the arguments, astonishing in their breadth and depth. It is a true tour de force, that will revolutionise your ideas of medieval Europe.

The Reader
The Reader encourages students to explore significant topics that impact their lives and have shaped the wider culture around them. Classic, timeless readings underscore the staying power of each topic (including identity; marriage and family; faith and religion; langua≥ education; work; wealth and property; popular culture; and war, terrorism, and protest) but are complicated by current issues, contemporary perspectives, and varied genres that offer new opportunities for critique and exploration. The Reader draws on research that connects reading and writing in order to help students practice literacy strategies that broaden and strengthen their reading, writing, and researching skills. Three rhetoric chapters explain how the problem-posing, problem-solving aspects of college-level inquiry require that students engage texts and the research that informs them using a process of thoughtful questioning-and that students bring this questioning methodology to their own processes of inventing, researching, drafting, and revising.

Beyond Belief

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Beyond Belief
Starting from a neutral position, this book looks at claims made by Christian leaders over the centuries and analyses them in the light of modern scholarship. Erudite yet mischievous, the book''s scope is wide, from early history to the present day, from America to China, and spanning many different disciplines. Many of the conclusions reached will shock devout believers, though all of them can be verified with reference to sympathetic works by biblical scholars and theologians. A recurring theme is that of open secrets - facts well known to historians and other academics in the Church, but kept from the faithful masses. These open secrets are not actively denied, just avoided so as not to cause offence to those who are familiar only with the Sunday-School version of events. Many Christians see their system of belief as dating from the earliest times, but this idea becomes difficult to sustain in the light of when and how key doctrines were established. Many ordinary Christians would be shocked to discover, for example, the prominent role played by violence and forgery in developing and promoting Christian doctrine. Whatever one''s own religious beliefs, the Christian Churches provide huge amounts of material for the enquiring mind. Repercussions from crusades that happened over 900 years ago are still in evidence today. The division of the Roman Empire in early Christian times also reverberates to the present day. To a large extent, the history of the Western World over the last 2,000 years is the history of the Christian Church. Without a proper understanding of the role of the Church, it is not possible to truly understand the history of Europe, the Middle East, or indeed the Americas.
