Did you know that Winston Churchill narrowly avoided assassination in the Second World War? Or that Prince Albert helped Britain avoid war with the United States in the nineteenth century from his deathbed? In this riveting read, James Moore and Paul Nero reveal fifty of history''s most dramatic narrow escapes. From wars that were averted to invasions, revolutions and apocalyptic scenarios that we avoided by the skin of our teeth, History''s Narrowest Escapes chronicles such stories as how a Soviet Army colonel stopped the Third World War in 1983, and how Nelson''s heroics at The Battle of Trafalgar might never have happened if it hadn''t been for the quick thinking of a humble seaman eight years before. Full of fascinating little-known facts, heroic acts, daring deeds and stories of serendipity, this book reveals how our history could have been very different... and possibly much worse!

The Descent of Man

release date: Sep 07, 2017
The Descent of Man
Applying his controversial theory of evolution to the origins of the human species, Charles Darwin''s The Descent of Man was the culmination of his life''s work. This Penguin Classics edition is edited with an introduction by James Moore and Adrian Desmond. In The Origin of Species, Charles Darwin refused to discuss human evolution, believing the subject too ''surrounded with prejudices''. He had been reworking his notes since the 1830s, but only with trepidation did he finally publish The Descent of Man in 1871. The book notoriously put apes in our family tree and made the races one family, diversified by ''sexual selection'' - Darwin''s provocative theory that female choice among competing males leads to diverging racial characteristics. Named by Sigmund Freud as ''one of the ten most significant books'' ever written, Darwin''s Descent of Man continues to shape the way we think about what it is that makes us uniquely human. In their introduction, James Moore and Adrian Desmond, acclaimed biographers of Charles Darwin, call for a radical re-assessment of the book, arguing that its core ideas on race were fired by Darwin''s hatred of slavery. The text is the second and definitive edition and this volume also contains suggestions for further reading, a chronology and biographical sketches of prominent individuals mentioned. Charles Darwin (1809-82), a Victorian scientist and naturalist, has become one of the most famous figures of science to date. The advent of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859 challenged and contradicted all contemporary biological and religious beliefs. If you enjoyed The Descent of Man, you might like Darwin''s On the Origin of Species, also available in Penguin Classics.

The Transformation of Urban Liberalism

release date: Nov 30, 2017
The Transformation of Urban Liberalism
"The Transformation of Urban Liberalism" re-evaluates the dramatic and turbulent political decade following the ''Third Reform Act'', and questions whether the Liberal Party''s political heartlands - the urban boroughs - really were in decline. In contrast to some recent studies, it does not see electoral reform, the Irish Home Rule crisis and the challenge of socialism as representing a fundamental threat to the integrity of the party. Instead this book illustrates, using parallel case studies, how the party gradually began to transform into a social democratic organisation through a re-evaluation of its role and policy direction. This process was not one directed from the centre - despite the important personalities of Gladstone and Rosebery - but rather one heavily influenced by ''grass roots politics''. Consequently, it suggests that late Victorian politics was more democratic and open than sometimes thought, with leading urban politicians forced to respond to the demands of party activists. Changes in the structure of urban rule produced new policy outcomes and brought new collectivist forms of New Liberalism onto the political agenda. Thus, it is argued that without the political transformations of the decade 1885-1895, the radical liberal governments of the Edwardian era would not have been possible.

The Long Experience of Love

release date: Jan 01, 1995
The Long Experience of Love
As its title suggests, The Long Experience of Love is, before all else, a book of love poems. Whether addressed to a specific person or evoking a memory, landscape, or the spirit of a painting, the poems honor both the presence of love and its loss. Moore writes of the common losses by which we know our lives: the loss of family, the friends who leave us, the desires that don''t come to pass. Moore''s tone is often elegiac, but it is also often ecstatic. He tells his secrets, names his pain without self-pity. These poems offer the delight of discovering that the most surprising of revelations may be sprung, the most subtle of effects achieved, by language that is immediate and accessible. The poet''s voice is easy, the music as natural as breathing.

The Freedom of History

release date: Jan 01, 1988
The Freedom of History
"The Freedom of History continues Jim Moore''s focus on themes established in The New Body. Jim Moore says, "It is the rub of history - personal and public, against the feeling of freedom and uniqueness that we experience as individuals - that inspires me to write... I am interested in the times when they oppress. But I am also drawn to the times when history, for brief intense periods, seems to disappear altogether, and we inhabit a more meditative and solitary world which gives us a very different perspective on our lives and on that world.""--back cover.
