Cyberspace and Propaganda
Scientific Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, Princeton University (Woodrow Wilson School for Public Affairs and International Relations), 53 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The catalyst and vehicle in domestic warfare and guerilla combat (not the cause) has always been technological revolution: the Cyberspace. Today, at least since the Al Qaida attacks at 9/11, technology is profoundly affecting the soveignty of governments, the world economy, and military strategy. Without doubt, information has often made the difference between victory and defeat. As a consequence, any efforts of governments in crisis diplomacy to stop others from interfering in its affairs, is rapidly eroding. Experiencing the current weakness of International Relations, United Nations and European Union, the ethnic, political, and religious diversity in the Gaza has given a strong foundation to the militant wings of Hamas inside the Gaza strip. Hamas not only conducts militant wings, but also runs extensive social networks. Whether in New York, Washington D.C., Berlin or Jerusalem: politicians are depended on what they read in their intelligence reports. Journalism correspondents find themselves in a system of embedded journalism both by the Israeli government and Palestinian Hamas, which restrict them to show no more than censored news. Finally, behind the individual''s eyeglasses in Europe and the US, every citizen is touched from what he intermediate sees online in his living room. Even the big problem of IR turns out in Gaza''s living rooms: The viewers of propaganda are more likely to vote with their remote controls than by further reasoning. Since its foundation the cyberspace enables extended personal and organizational interactions through many political, religious and economical borders in the World. None-state actors like militant splinter groups of Hamas might take over th

Price Limits Under Incomplete Preference Information Based On Almost Stochastic Dominance

Price Limits Under Incomplete Preference Information Based On Almost Stochastic Dominance
We analyze price limits as decision aids for identifying favorable and unfavorable contracts from the perspective of a selling firm. The corresponding decision problem is shaped by uncertainty of the outcomes and incomplete information about the decision maker''s preferences. The proposed price limits are based on the theory of almost stochastic dominance. We make this theory more applicable by contributing a version of almost second-degree stochastic dominance that (1) refers to the same aggregate information about marginal utilities as almost first-degree stochastic dominance, (2) does without information about higher order derivatives of the utility function, and (3) is implied by almost first-degree stochastic dominance (hierarchy property). Numerical examples show that the incomplete preference information may lead to substantial improvements of the price limits relative to the situation where no preference information is available.

The Optimal Focus of Transfer Prices

release date: Jan 01, 2014
The Optimal Focus of Transfer Prices
This paper studies transfer prices influencing managerial decisions and determining corporate taxes in a multinational firm. Common sense suggests that the transfer price decision should be made to maximize the firm''s after-tax profit and thus achieve the optimal trade-off between pre-tax profitability and tax minimization. Based on a model of a decentralized firm facing asymmetric information with respect to operations, I examine why this conclusion does not hold in general. In particular, I demonstrate that a policy of negotiated transfer pricing, under which the divisions exploit their superior information but select the transfer price to maximize the firm''s pre-tax profit, is the firm''s optimal organizational choice if the high-tax division''s productivity is high. With respect to the firm''s discretion over the transfer price, I identify situations where the firm''s optimal policy choice does not depend on the arm''s length range and where less discretion increases the firm''s profitability.

The Substitutability Between Brick-and-mortar Stores and E-Commerce

The Substitutability Between Brick-and-mortar Stores and E-Commerce
We analyze the substitutability between brick-and-mortar stores and e-Commerce. Using a novel data set on the German book market we find that between 26 and 55% of the decrease in book sales from 2014-2017 can be explained by the decrease in the number of bookstores. This indicates that brick-and-mortar stores and e-Commerce are imperfect substitutes. One explanation could be that some consumers prefer to purchase books offline because of the service provision in brick-and-mortar stores (e.g., advice, atmosphere, presentation, salese ffort, etc.). We also find that the degree of substitutability differs between different types of books. When a bookshop closes the decrease in sales of fiction titles is more than 2 times larger than the decrease in sales of non-fiction titles. Our findings indicate that regulatory measures and vertical restraints that increase the number of bookstores can have a positive effect on the demand for books even in the presence of e-Commerce.
