Patterns of Wonder

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Patterns of Wonder
Based on the popular Patterns of Power invitational approach to grammar instruction, Patterns of Wonder sets the stage for introducing PreK-1 emergent writers to the power of language and writing. It''s no secret that emergent writers thrive in classrooms filled with inquiry, play, and wonder, but how can we invite our youngest writers into the conventions of language, engage them in authentic writing experiences, and capitalize on their natural curiosity around what writers do? Building on the same playful qualities of the invitational process introduced in their bestselling Patterns of Power series, Whitney La Rocca and Jeff Anderson turn their instructional lens to our youngest writers, sharing new ways we can invite them to experiment, have fun, and take risks with writing and language. In this valuable resource, Whitney and Jeff: u200b Introduce the Patterns of Wonder Phases of Emergent Writing as a way to reflect on the work young writers are doing and plan for effective, scaffolded instruction. Outline an adjusted invitational process, adapted especially for use with emergent writers. Position grammar and concepts about print instruction across three overlapping levels of support: oral language, illustrating, and writing. Include over 50 sample lessons that pinpoint and build cumulatively across the most common needs of emergent writers. Feature over 200 engaging picture book recommendations to stir curious classroom conversations. Grounded in play, conversation, and most of all, wonder, Patterns of Wonder brings Whitney and Jeff''s irrepressible excitement for inquiry and writing instruction to the ways we support our Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade emergent writers.

Design and Implementation of a Bottomfish Fishery-independent Survey in the Main Hawaiian Islands

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Design and Implementation of a Bottomfish Fishery-independent Survey in the Main Hawaiian Islands
"Commercial and recreational fishing are important to the economy and culture of Hawaii. The deep-slope bottomfish commercial fishery preferentially targets seven high value ''Deep-7'' species (i.e, six snappers and one grouper, hereafter referred to as bottomfish). The NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) Stock Assessment Program is responsible for regularly conducting assessments of bottomfish. The stock assessment process requires reliable time-series of catches, fishing effort and life history demographics to estimate stock abundance trends and evaluate sustainability benchmarks. Current bottomfish stock assessments that rely solely on fishery-dependent abundance indices may be biased (Ault et al., 2014). A series of workshops convened in 2001-2005 evaluated existing bottomfish stock assessment methodologies in the Pacific Islands Region (PIR; Mace et al., 2001; Ralston et al., 2004). Mace et al. (2001) noted that the greatest impediment to credible bottomfish stock assessments was the lack of accurate and precise input data. To improve abundance estimates, Ralston et al. (2004) recommended development of a fishery-independent survey using available ''advanced technologies''. A 2005 workshop on Ecosystem Science and Management Planning reiterated the pressing need for a design and implementation of population-level fishery-independent survey to obtain size-structured abundance data for bottomfish, and to aggressively pursue development of length-based assessment models. This goal of this technical report was to improve stock assessments through optimal design and implementation of a bottomfish fishery-independent survey for the Deep-7 bottomfish complex in the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) with three primary objectives: 1. Evaluate the most effective survey gears for obtaining species-specific spatial size structured abundance metrics of the Hawaiian bottomfish stock; 2. Conduct quantitative gears intercalibration studies to determine the relative fishing power of the multiple gears to be used in the survey; 3. Detail the required methodologies for efficient conduct of a multi-gear fishery-independent Survey of the MHI bottomfish stocks"--Executive summary. The Orchard 1st Ward: a Testament of Faith
An account of the lives of members of the Orchard 1st Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Founded in 1938, members of the ward struggled through the last throes of the Great Depression, a world war, followed by other smaller wars. They wrestled with polo. They built two meetinghouses and helped fund them by building and selling two homes. There were welfare projects, including the production of melons, tomatoes, and eggs for the poor. They sent off and welcomed home young missionaries. Together they laughed and cried and lived and died, lifting each other up when times were hard. They did their best to follow the teachings of their God.
