The Village, the Child
The face of Ste. Madeleine, the agricultural village where I was born and where I grew up in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the 1950''s, has changed. The name Ste. Madeleine was associated with the island''s sugar cane cultivation and sugar manufacture at the Usine Ste. Madeleine factory. The economy has since changed. Many landmarks have also disappeared from this village in south Trinidad. As you walk or drive through the village today, the nostalgia is great... so great. Please celebrate with me that which I have attempted to capture through my childhood eyes.

But, Even Now
Written as a work of fiction, the hardships of fictitious Bible characters, along with the possible scenarios of some known Bible characters, show that even the most faithful are met with trials, but none of them are new. Someone, somewhere has done it and come out stronger on the other side. With a unique twist, the book leaps from the first century to a modern character journaling of her difficulties with a marriage on the rocks. Sharing powerful stories helps others know that they are not alone and there is no shame in voicing doubts or in seeking help. Most importantly, we see how God is at work in all of it. There is nothing we can do to diminish his love for us - even now.

Sex, Life, and Hannah - Volume 2 - Spring Season
Hannah feels him stir. Holding an ice pack to her swollen face, and stuck in an elevator between the second and third floor of a hospital is not how she envisioned running into The Ex. She starts analyzing the situation: Is she still in love with him? Is he still in love with her? They start kissing, then petting, then heavy petting, until she can feel his growing hardness against the inside of her thigh... The Spring Season in this sexy series is a continuation of Hannah''s fall from perfect twenty-something grace. Hannah''s run-in with The Ex is more about icing her nose than melting her heart or giving him a second chance. She seems to be making all the wrong decisions about all the right men; rejecting the doctor who makes her vagina quiver for Mr. Smyth who turns out to be the tall, dark, sophisticated older man she thought he was...with just one problem. The unexpected twists in this humorous romance would drive any woman to the opposite side of nice girl, which is exactly what happens to Hannah. But a bad girl can have some fun along the way.

Technologies of the Natural
Responding to Susan Stryker''s (2006) call to identify the "seams and sutures" of the ''natural body'', this dissertation analyzes the social incarnation of the ''natural male body'' through ''male enhancement'' discourse in Canada and the United States (247). As one of the few sociological investigations into the medical practice of male enhancement, this research reorients our analytical gaze away from the somatic transformations of historically-oppressed people''s sexed bodies, towards bringing the male body, cis masculinity, and whiteness into the spotlight of critique. This investigation is grounded in fifty hours of online observations of a male enhancement forum for cis men interested in augmenting their genitals; and twenty in-depth, qualitative interviews with medical practitioners who specialize in male enhancement procedures. Drawing on the theoretical and analytical tradition of somatechnics, I juxtapose bodies and somatic transformations in relation to each other to reveal the underlying assumptions, justifications, and prohibitions for particular forms of bodily being. I first compare how male enhancement for cis men and gender confirming genital procedures for trans people are discursively produced in contrasting ways, despite how both sets of these procedures use overlapping medical knowledges to intervene on genitals, aiming to produce similar aesthetic results and to reduce patient suffering. Yet male enhancement is discursively framed as ''restorative'' or ''augmentative'' of the natural male body, whereas gender confirmation surgeries are rendered ''constructive'' of an unnatural body. In the second half of my analysis, I demonstrate how male enhancements that result in ''monster cocks'', by definition, make penetrative sexual practices impossible or cause sexual partners pain, thereby creating a tension between sexual practices that male the body, and dominance practices that accomplish masculinity. Reading the monster cock in relation to discourses about the ''female reproductive body'', dyspareunia, and racialized bodies, I trace how male enhancement discourse works to shore up the contours of whiteness, cis masculinity, and the male body. This project aims to disrupt the naturalized white male body against which all others are measured, and attempts to make an intervention into how bodies come to matter.

Two Marginalized Adolescent Readers Completing an Internet Inquiry Project
This qualitative study focused on the strategies that two marginalized seventh graders used as they completed an Internet inquiry project about survival. The participants spent time over a four-week period in three phases--selecting a topic, locating information, and presenting information. Participants completed journals and participated in interviews. The participants'' online searches and how they organized their presentations were recorded. The researcher took field notes. These four data sources were used to determine subcategories in each phase to document the strategies they employed as they completed the project. Participants used phrases and questions as they decided on key words to locate information. The majority of the sites they visited ended in the .com domain. They used different web browsers and spent varied amounts of time reading websites once they decided on key words and selected sites. Each participant approached the project uniquely and met the requirements to complete it.

Implementing Guided Reading Strategies with Kindergarten and First Grade Students

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Implementing Guided Reading Strategies with Kindergarten and First Grade Students
In the action research project report, the teacher researchers found that many kindergarten and first-grade students did not have the reading readiness skills to be reading at their benchmark target. The purpose of the project was to improve the students overall reading ability. The dates of the project began on September 8 through December 20, 2011. There were 74 students and 74 parents that participated in this research study. The teacher researchers noticed that the students lacked reading readiness skills that were necessary to meet grade level benchmarks. The teacher researchers used a parent survey, baseline assessments, and observational checklist to document evidence. The teacher researchers found from the parent survey that students who lacked interest in books and reading them demonstrated low reading readiness skills. The baseline assessment the students took showed an overall weakness in letter identification, initial sounds, medial sounds, and ending sounds. The observational checklist indicated difficulty with segmenting sounds, letter sound knowledge, inability to rhyme, decoding difficulties and reading miscues, poor comprehension, lack of interest in books, lack of print awareness skills, poor attentions spans, lack of response during whole group instruction, and off-task behaviors. The teacher researchers used a variety of interventions to improve their students overall reading skills. These interventions included small guided reading groups, word work, phonemic awareness drills, and posters that gave visual clues on how to decode unknown words. In the guided reading groups the students were paired with other students at their same reading ability. Flashcards were used during word work that helped to gain letter and sound knowledge and identification. Phonemic awareness drills helped to promote students sound and decoding skills. The posters provided a quick and kid friendly visual clue to help read unknown words. The students overall reading growth was the most notable result taken from the action research project. The teacher researchers saw marked growth in letter recognition and beginning sounds. In letter recognition the targeted students represented that 100% (n=21) of the students recognized all 10 of the letters tested. In beginning sounds 100% (n=21) the targeted students recognized all 3 beginning sounds. The teacher researchers concluded that the interventions used during this research project helped to promote reading readiness skills in most of the targeted students. Four appendixes present: (1) Parent Survey; (2) Observational Check List; (3) Site A Baseline Assessment; and (4) Site B Baseline Assessment. (Contains 6 tables and 31 figures.).
