Joan Dunn, fresh out of college, entered the New York City public school system in the 1950s as a high school English teacher. Four years later, disillusioned by the dysfunctional conditions in the system, which even then failed to educate its students, she resigned, joined Time magazine and published her landmark critique, Retreat from Learning, which Time hailed as "an outraged indictment of modern educational theories from one who has seen them in action."Over the years at Time, she was a researcher and reporter and culminated her career there as head of the magazine's storied Letters Department, which answered thousands of letters annually from readers.She is the author of many magazine articles and short stories. One of the latter, published in the summer 1980 issue of th Virginai Quarterly Review, won its annual Balch Award.Seen and Unseen is her firts poetry collection.
