Human Remains. What Is Wrong with Human Resource Management and How to Put It Right

release date: Mar 17, 2015
Human Remains. What Is Wrong with Human Resource Management and How to Put It Right
Based on his experience as an HR director and consultant, Russell John Connor identifies the fads and fashions that make up modern day Human Resource Management practice and reveals the flawed assumptions upon which popular notions of people management are founded. Unusually for a management book, Human Remains explores how deep philosophical issues, such as the mind-body split and the nature of reality, are intricately connected to practice. It is argued that philosophy matters profoundly. It certainly influences how we decide to organise and manage people. In order to offer a radically different approach to managing people and organisations, Human Remains presents a relevant management system and philosophy that brings uncertainty centre-stage. This book is written for HR professionals who are frustrated about their lack of impact and chief executives who are looking to build healthy organisations, which promote trust-inducing behaviour. Although Human Remains is about the way that we manage people and organizations, it is also an invitation to think about the way that we think about ourselves. As such, it is written for everyone interested in reflecting on, and making sense of, the everyday human reality of working in organisations. REVIEW ''For thirty years we''ve been talking about unpredictability but still reward those who claim to bring certainty and control. It''s time we looked to a future created by those who understand the relation between uncertainty and growth.'' Gillian Robertson, PhD, management lecturer and consultant

Digital Life After Death

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Digital Life After Death
In “Digital Life After Death: The issue of planning for a person''s digital assets after death,” author John Connor discusses the concept of a digital asset and what happens to these assets when the owner dies. First, Connor lays the foundation to define what a digital asset is and why these assets can create problems in estate planning. Next, the author examines how various social networking sites, e-mail providers, and blog hosting sites are dealing with the concept of digital assets. Connor then provides possible solutions for dealing with digital assets. These solutions include: planning for digital assets prior to death, leaving instructions (including usernames and passwords) on how to access digital assets in the event of death, setting up a trust in which the usernames and passwords can be stored and accessed by the trustee and eventual executor, and possibly providing some information about digital assets in a will. Finally, the author describes the consequences of failure to provide for your digital assets after death.

The Inns and Alehouses of Stafford

release date: Jun 28, 2014
The Inns and Alehouses of Stafford
The Inns and Alehouses of Stafford: Through the North Gate is the second of two books by Stafford author John Connor. This second volume looks at the drinking establishments outside the ancient town’s fortified walls, covering the whole of the north and south ends of the town, reaching the villages of Milford, Brocton, Bradley and Haughton. This presents a definitive review of the history of a wider area of Stafford’s beer establishments, listing owners and the history behind the areas pub names and signs. The book is a mine of information that will appeal to local pub buffs and historians alike, and is an essential accompaniment to the first book, Through the South Gate. The entry for the inns and alehouses within the book include a photo of each building, a description of the changes that have taken place to the pub over the years and the names they have been known by. A comprehensive list of licensees of each establishment is also included. This shows who the licensees were, where they came from and where they went to. A short narrative about every inn sign completes each entry. Pubs have always been the hub of the community and in The Inns and alehouses of Stafford: Through the North Gate, readers can learn more about the hostelries that have given separate suburb and village communities over 300 years of drinking pleasure!

Building a Flourishing Organisation; Laying the Foundations for Success in an Increasingly Uncertain and Complex World

Reflective thinking turns experience into insight, which leads to the widening of choice. This is an ideal resource for leaders and game-changers and anyone interested in building flourishing organisations where there is a dynamic link between high-performance and being a great place to work. Implementing In-Service Education And Training

release date: Dec 19, 2013
Implementing In-Service Education And Training
First published in 1993. In the 1990s the education service faces challenging new priorities. As teachers seek to extend their skills and develop new expertise, they need continued, career-long professional development. This volume examines how teachers play key roles in providing and evaluating training. From schools in four education authorities varied styles of INSET are represented, drawing on words and experience of those at the centre of INSET activities. The book reflects some of the problems they face and how these are resolved. The authors link theory with practice of evaluation. They address issues of principle alongside day-to-day experience. This book offers a range of alternative models and styles of INSET for practitioners to consider and adapt to their own needs. The authors recognize the value of practitioner knowledge and suggest that in evaluating INSET, teachers can articulate for themselves and for an outside audience provide much information about what it means to teach and learn.

The Future Is Imagined

release date: Mar 01, 2013
The Future Is Imagined
Who is this guy anyway? This might be your reaction on reading Russell John Connor''s new book especially if you are an evolutionary biologist, economist, social scientist, psychotherapist or management consultant. In all of these fields the focus has been on making the uncertain certain by identifying mechanisms and processes. The Future Is Imagined confronts you with the reality that uncertainty is woven deeply into the fabric of life. At the heart of life and living is a gap in knowledge. Choice is the fundamental atom of life. When uncertainty and choice are brought centre-stage there are profound consequences for the way that we think about life and all living organisms. It radically reshapes how we think about thinking and it alters for good most of what we currently take as evolutionary gospel, applied economics, psychotherapy, best-practice human resource management, organisation design and social policy-making. Revealing and possibly revolutionary! Time, uncertainty and the nature of being are dealt with in an extraordinarily relevant way. Steve Jones, MA Oxon, the author''s best friend.

release date: Jul 01, 2012
It's about Time;an Introduction to Elliott Jaques; A Galileo for the Social Sciences
This book is about the ideas of a visionary, a Galileo for the social sciences - Elliott Jaques; the legacy of whom provides the scientific basis upon which healthy organisations and flourishing societies can be built. Jaques was arguably the most controversial social scientist and management thinker of the last fifty years. It turns out that he was ahead of his time. It''s About Time makes accessible Jaques'' ideas and the foundations he provides for a new social science; one that centres the human factors at the heart of the enterprise. Russell John Connor, entrepreneur and business-manager, describes Jaques'' impact on economics, psychology and management science and explains how the application of his ideas creates long-lasting organisations, which promote trust-inducing behaviour. Compelling, thought provoking and very timely. Robert Copping, MD Sightpath

Let Slip the Dogs of War

release date: Mar 16, 2012
Let Slip the Dogs of War
Merriam Press Military Monograph 96. Second Edition (March 2012). On July 15, 1950, only a few weeks after North Korea invaded South Korea with overwhelming force, General Douglas MacArthur authorized the creation of a Provisional Raider Company to blow up bridges and railway tunnels behind enemy lines. Of 800 potential volunteers, 115 made the cut and endured weeks of grueling amphibious and demolitions training. On September 9, they and a small contingent of British Commandos left to conduct a raid at Kunsan, South Korea. On subsequent assignments, the Raiders went ashore at Inchon with the Marines, and with the X Corps at Wonsan. They conducted long-range intelligence-gathering patrols in which they also inserted and removed Korean agents. During the Chosin Reservoir campaign they were assigned to take and hold open the mountain passes for the withdrawal of the Marines and the 7th Division. The Raiders were evacuated from North Korea on December 14, 1950, and assigned anti-guerrilla activities in South Korea. At Chang-to they were cut off and surrounded by two North Korean regiments. On April 1, 1951, all Ranger and Special Operations units were disbanded because the Army high command believed they were not being utilized properly. This is the story of that unit as told by one of its members, John Connor. In about seven months of almost continual combat, they managed to accumulate four battle stars, a bronze arrowhead for a combat assault landing, Presidential Unit citations from both the U.S. Navy and the Republic of Korea, along with a special commendation from the commanding general of X Corps for imposing losses on the enemy far in excess of their own numbers. Contents: * Introduction * Prologue * Childhood * Basic Training * Occupation Duty * Camp McGill * Kusan * Inchon and Kimpo * North Korea * Chosin Reservoir * South Korea * The Battle at Chang-to * Business as Usual * Deactivation * Epilogue * Afterword * Satellite photo of Korean Peninsula at night * Surrender leaflet and news article * Presidential Unit Citation * Personal message to General Collins from GHQ, 1950 * Fragmentary order to Colonel Ely * Commendation to CO, Special Activities Group * Permanent orders to John Connor * Bibliography * 31 photos * 7 documents * 2 maps.
